It can help separate private content from the rest of your device, but availability and menus vary by model, region, and software version. Samsung describes its protection as Knox-based; that is a product claim, not an independent security guarantee.
What Secure Folder protects—and what it does not promise
Samsung describes Secure Folder as a separate encrypted area for private files and apps, protected by the Knox security platform. You can set a separate PIN, password, or pattern, or use a supported biometric method. Samsung’s descriptions explain how the feature is designed to work; they do not establish that it defeats every attacker, malware, or every person with access to your device. Samsung UK’s guide and Samsung US’s Galaxy security overview describe the feature and its device-dependent availability.

Secure Folder is useful for keeping selected content apart from ordinary Gallery or app use. It is not a substitute for keeping another copy of important files, and hiding its icon does not remove access to the folder.
Check whether your Galaxy device supports it
Samsung says availability varies by device, and its UK support page notes that some older phone models may no longer support Secure Folder. Samsung Australia’s guide gives Android Nougat 7.0 or later as a baseline for the Australian variants it covers; that does not mean every device on that Android version is compatible. Check support for your exact model, software release, and region before relying on the feature. If you are considering a device specifically for Secure Folder, verify its compatibility rather than assuming all Galaxy phones include it.

Set up Secure Folder
Samsung UK’s instructions, updated May 14, 2026, give this path on the software version they cover:
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder.
- Sign in to an existing Samsung Account or create one, then complete the on-screen setup.
- Choose a lock type, such as a PIN, password, pattern, or an available biometric method.
Menu names and locations can differ on older or region-specific software. If the listed route is missing, search Settings for “Secure Folder” and consult Samsung support for your model and region. Samsung Argentina’s guide, updated October 1, 2026, documents paths that vary by Android version. Samsung Argentina’s instructions provide a regional example.

Add files or apps without confusing copy and move
Files
Open Secure Folder, select More options > Add files, choose a file type and the items, then choose whether to copy or move them. Samsung also documents a Move to Secure Folder action in apps such as Gallery, My Files, and Voice Recorder. Samsung UK’s guide describes these options.

- Copy creates a second version inside Secure Folder and leaves the original outside.
- Move places the original in Secure Folder rather than leaving it in its previous location.
Before moving a file, make sure you understand where it will remain accessible. Keep a separate backup of important data rather than making Secure Folder its only copy.

Apps
Use the add-app control inside Secure Folder to add an app. Adding an already installed app creates a separate copy inside the folder; that instance can use a different account from the app outside. You can also download an app directly inside Secure Folder, in which case that app is kept there. These are separate app instances, so do not assume they share logins or data. Samsung outlines these behaviors in its UK support guide.
Hiding the icon only reduces casual visibility
You can hide the Secure Folder shortcut from the Home and Apps screens. That hides the shortcut, not the folder itself: Samsung says it can still be reached through Settings, and some devices or software versions provide access through Quick Panel controls. Treat hiding as a way to reduce casual visibility, not as a way to make the folder undetectable or remove access. The available controls vary by device and version. Samsung UK’s instructions explain hiding and access through Settings.

Plan for a forgotten lock or a device change
Samsung UK says that if you forget the Secure Folder PIN, pattern, or password, you may be able to reset it using your Samsung Account. If you have also lost access to that account, the guide directs you to Samsung Support. Recovery options may differ by device or region, so check the local instructions before you need them.

The same Australian support page warns that detected rooting or use of a custom ROM can automatically lock the folder, preventing access to its apps and data. These are Samsung’s stated limitations for the regional variants covered by that page, not a universal promise about every model. Keep important information backed up elsewhere before moving it into Secure Folder. Samsung Australia’s setup guide provides those regional cautions.
