Moving Apartments? Why I Kept My Own Wi-Fi Router

Owning your router can provide continuity and may avoid a rental, but your new apartment’s connection and provider rules determine whether it will work.

Taking a personally owned Wi-Fi router to a new apartment can preserve control over your home network and may avoid a provider’s router rental—but only if the equipment works with the service at the new address. The move is a good time to check the connection type, provider rules, and setup requirements before packing your gear.

What owning my router actually changed

When I moved, the practical benefit of bringing my own router was continuity: I could keep using a network device I already owned instead of automatically switching to a provider-supplied router. Depending on the provider’s terms, using your own equipment may also avoid a rental charge. Neither benefit is guaranteed: provider policies differ, and ownership alone does not make Wi-Fi faster or improve coverage.

The key is to separate the question of ownership from the question of compatibility. A router that worked in one apartment may not be sufficient for the connection installed in another.

Check the new apartment before you pack or buy equipment

First confirm that your chosen provider serves the new address, then ask what kind of connection is available and what equipment is already installed. Apartment internet may use coaxial cable, Ethernet, phone wiring, a fiber terminal, or existing gateway equipment. The visible wall jack or box can help identify the setup, but ask the provider to confirm what it supports. T-Mobile’s apartment setup guidance recommends checking the available connection points and equipment; Verizon’s moving guidance is another place to check address availability and setup arrangements.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Before reusing your equipment, ask the new provider these questions:

  • Is service available at this exact address, and what connection type will be activated?
  • Can I use my own router, and do I need a separate modem?
  • Does initial activation or technical support require the provider’s gateway or another provider-supplied device?
  • If the service is cable, is my modem on the provider’s current approved list?
  • Are there rental, support, or equipment-return terms I should understand before choosing?

Policies are provider-specific. For example, Xfinity allows customer-owned equipment subject to a compatibility check, while Frontier says its router or modem is required for initial activation. These examples are not universal rules, and equipment requirements can change; check the current instructions for the provider serving your new home.

Know whether you need a modem, a router, or a gateway

A modem connects a service provider’s incoming connection to Ethernet. A router creates and manages the local network, sharing that connection among devices and providing Wi-Fi. Some equipment combines both jobs in one gateway, and some apartment setups may not require a separate modem. Google’s modem overview explains the distinction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That difference matters when deciding what to bring. A standalone Wi-Fi router cannot replace a modem or provider terminal if the apartment’s service requires one. Conversely, if the provider supplies a gateway or the building’s connection already provides the necessary handoff, a separate modem may be unnecessary. Confirm the required arrangement with the provider rather than assuming your old stack of equipment will plug in unchanged.

Match the router to the plan and the apartment

Compatibility is only the first check. Consider whether the router’s capabilities suit the subscribed internet plan and the number and types of devices in the household. The FCC notes that multiple connected devices can affect performance. It also describes a general trade-off: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi tends to reach farther, while 5 GHz can carry data more quickly. Actual coverage and speed depend on the router, devices, apartment layout, interference, and service plan; those frequency tendencies are not a promise of particular results in your new home. The FCC’s home network guidance provides more context.

Use the new apartment’s layout as part of the decision. A router that covered a smaller or differently shaped home may leave dead zones in the new one, while a more capable model does not guarantee better signal in every building. If you keep your router, check its specifications against your plan and household needs; if you are unsure, ask the provider what it supports.

Weigh ownership against provider equipment

There is no universal cost or performance winner. Compare the actual terms for your address and plan, rather than assuming that buying your own device is automatically cheaper or that provider equipment is automatically better.

  • Compatibility and activation: Find out which devices are accepted and whether provider equipment is needed to activate service.
  • Equipment roles: Confirm whether you need a modem, a router, a combined gateway, or only a router behind an existing terminal.
  • Plan and coverage: Check that the router suits the plan and your home’s layout and device load.
  • Rental and support: Compare any equipment rental terms with the support available for customer-owned equipment.
  • Updates and security: Determine how the device receives software updates and whether you can manage its security settings.

Secure the network after the move

Once the connection is working, set unique administrator and Wi-Fi passwords rather than leaving default credentials in place. Use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption when available, install software updates, and check that the router’s firewall is enabled. The FTC also recommends considering a guest network and turning off remote management, WPS, or UPnP when you do not need those features. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guide explains these steps.

  3. Check compatibility: For cable service, consult the provider’s current approved-modem list before buying or reusing a modem. Check router requirements against the plan and household coverage needs.
  4. Set up and secure: Connect the equipment in the order the provider specifies, then change the administrator and Wi-Fi credentials, use WPA3 or WPA2 where available, and verify that software updates are enabled.
