Samsung Auto Blocker is a built-in Galaxy security setting that blocks more than app sideloading: it can also restrict USB-based commands and software installs, and filter suspected malicious images in messaging apps. Its optional Maximum restrictions mode adds controls that may interfere with work profiles, message previews, shared albums, 2G service, and some Wi-Fi connections. For most people who install apps only from trusted sources, Samsung says the standard setting is sufficient.
What Samsung Auto Blocker does
Auto Blocker is available on Galaxy devices running One UI 6 or later, although the exact menus and options depend on the model, software version, country, and carrier. Samsung’s standard mode focuses on a defined set of installation and input risks:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Blocks app installations from sources outside Galaxy Store and Google Play.
- Blocks unauthorized commands and unofficial software installation over a USB connection.
- Blocks suspected malicious images in messaging apps.
The USB restriction concerns unofficial software updates installed through USB; Samsung Canada says official updates installed in device settings or through Smart Switch are not affected. These are specific protections, not a guarantee against all malware or a replacement for software updates and careful app choices. Samsung’s US support page describes the baseline protections.

Maximum restrictions is an optional, broader configuration, not simply a stronger app-installation check. Samsung lists it as available from One UI 6.1.1; 2G blocking and the non-secure Wi-Fi control are additional from One UI 7. Check the options on your device rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same bundle.

Samsung describes Maximum restrictions as intended for people who want stronger security even at the cost of convenience. Its support guidance says standard Auto Blocker is sufficient for most users who install apps from trusted sources. Samsung Canada’s guidance outlines the extra limits and compatibility trade-offs.
Should you turn on Auto Blocker?
For most Galaxy owners: turn on the standard setting
If you do not need to install apps from outside the official stores, standard Auto Blocker adds the documented blocks without applying Maximum restrictions’ broader limits. It is a practical default for people who want the feature’s protections while preserving normal work, messaging, and network functions.

Choose Maximum restrictions only if its extra controls fit your needs
Consider this mode if you prefer the stronger set of restrictions and can accept the possible disruption. Before enabling it, consider whether you rely on a work profile or device-admin app, whether 2G is your only available mobile network in some places, or whether you use shared albums, message previews, or automatic Wi-Fi reconnection.

How to enable Auto Blocker
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker. Menu names can vary by Galaxy model and software.
- Switch on Auto Blocker to use the standard protections.
- To apply the stricter bundle, open Maximum restrictions on the Auto Blocker screen and enable it.
Samsung says devices released with One UI 6.1.1 have Auto Blocker on by default, while devices updated from an earlier One UI version retain their previous setting. Defaults therefore are not universal; check the setting on your phone. Availability and screens can also vary by carrier, country, model, and software version. Samsung’s Galaxy Store listing gives the version milestones and availability details: Auto Blocker listing.
What changes across Galaxy software versions
Samsung first announced Auto Blocker for devices compatible with One UI 6 in October 2023. Its Galaxy Store listing identifies One UI 6 as the baseline, Maximum restrictions from One UI 6.1.1, and the 2G and non-secure Wi-Fi controls from One UI 7. The listing displays version 1.3.10.7 dated January 20, 2026. Feature presence and menus can still differ by device and region.

Samsung also announced on February 27, 2026, that it intended to let users directly install qualifying third-party Android app stores and their apps during 2026, subject to security and compliance requirements. The announcement did not specify a rollout date, eligible stores, supported devices or countries, or confirm current availability. Treat it as an announced plan, not proof that the change is already available on your Galaxy. Samsung’s developer announcement provides the stated scope.

Samsung’s October 31, 2023 announcement connected Auto Blocker with Message Guard, describing protection against “Zero Click attacks” involving images that conceal malicious code. At that time, Samsung said protection covered Google and Samsung messaging apps and had expanded to Messenger, Telegram, KakaoTalk, and WhatsApp. That dated app list does not establish current compatibility for every messaging app or device. Samsung’s launch announcement gives the historical scope.
