Uninstall an Activity Monitoring Agent: Identify It, Remove It Safely

Activity monitoring agents have different uninstall procedures by product and operating system. Identify the agent first, and involve IT if the device is organization-managed.

To uninstall an activity monitoring agent, first identify its exact name and your device’s operating system, then follow that vendor’s instructions for that agent and platform. If the device is managed by an employer or another organization, ask its IT administrator to handle or authorize removal: the agent may require administrator access, support other managed features, or be reinstalled by an organization’s deployment policy.

Identify the agent and who manages the device

“Activity monitoring agent” is a general description, not the name of one product with a universal uninstall procedure. Check the device’s installed apps for the agent’s exact name, or ask the administrator who manages the computer. Then identify whether it runs Windows, macOS, or Linux; removal instructions can differ by both product and operating system.

If the computer belongs to an employer or another organization, contact its IT team before changing the software. ActivTrak says its agent is deployed and managed by the organization’s account administrator, and directs non-administrators who want it removed to contact IT. Its documented removal methods require access to the ActivTrak account. ActivTrak’s uninstall instructions were published April 17, 2019, and updated August 31, 2026.

Use the procedure for the exact product and operating system

  1. Confirm the product and platform. Record the agent’s exact name and the computer’s operating system and version.
  2. Check the vendor’s current support instructions. Choose the procedure for that product and operating system rather than relying on a generic app-removal guide. For example, Elastic documents separate procedures for Windows, macOS, and Linux and specifies administrator or root privileges. Elastic’s instructions apply to Elastic Agent, not to every monitoring agent.
  3. Get the required authorization and access. Some procedures require elevated local privileges or access to an administrator account or console. If you do not have the required access on an organization-managed device, ask IT to perform the removal.
  4. Follow the vendor’s steps in order. Do not substitute commands or disable protections based on instructions for a different agent. If the documented procedure is unclear or reports an error, stop and ask the vendor or the organization’s administrator for the product-specific next step.
  5. Verify what happened. Check that the agent is no longer listed as installed or running, and ask IT or consult the vendor’s instructions about any remaining device record or deployment policy.

Check for managed features and records before removal

Removing an agent can affect more than monitoring. N-able says uninstalling its Windows Agent also removes associated programs and deployed features, which can include managed antivirus and patch management. Its documentation also describes a dashboard workflow that can delete data associated with a device. These effects are specific to N-able’s product; check the relevant vendor instructions and ask the administrator what applies to your device before proceeding. N-able’s Windows Agent uninstall documentation describes its removal options and effects.

Account for the way the agent was installed

An agent installed through an organization’s deployment system may return after local removal. N-able advises removing an agent deployed through Group Policy by using the same Group Policy Object; otherwise, policy may detect that the agent is missing and install it again. This is a product- and deployment-specific example, but it illustrates why an administrator should remove both the software and any applicable deployment rule.

Do not bypass uninstall protection or organizational controls. If the agent is managed, request removal through the administrator responsible for the device; a local uninstall alone may not change the organization’s configuration.

If removal does not complete

  • You are asked for administrator credentials: Use an authorized administrator account or ask IT to proceed.
  • The uninstall option is unavailable or blocked: The agent may be protected or managed. Ask the vendor or device administrator for the supported removal route rather than attempting to defeat the protection.
  • The agent returns after removal: Ask IT to check whether a deployment policy is reinstalling it. The original deployment method may need to be addressed as well as the local installation.
  • Related security or management features stop working: Confirm with IT which features were tied to the agent and whether they need a replacement or separate configuration.

After an authorized uninstall

Confirm with the administrator or vendor whether removal also requires handling a device record, associated data, or deployment settings. Whether those items remain or are deleted depends on the product and the removal route; do not assume that uninstalling the local agent automatically removes an account-side record.
