The right laptop accessories depend on how you use your computer: a desk setup benefits from a stand, keyboard, monitor, or dock; travel calls for a sleeve, bag, or charger; and calls may justify a webcam or headset. Treat this list as a menu, not a shopping checklist. Before buying anything that connects to your laptop, check its ports, supported features, and operating-system compatibility.
Start with the problem you want to solve
Lenovo notes that useful accessories vary with the type of laptop and how it is used. A mouse can be a practical first addition for frequent laptop use, but the computer already includes a keyboard and display; accessories are useful when they improve a specific task or fit a different working environment.

For a desk setup, consider input devices, a stand, a monitor, or a dock. For travel, focus on carrying and charging. For calls or classes, look at the camera and audio. Extra storage and a stylus address narrower needs. The sections below explain when each item makes sense and what to check.

1. Laptop stand
A stand raises or positions the laptop separately from your hands, which can be useful when you want to use the laptop screen alongside external input devices. If the laptop is elevated, an external keyboard and mouse let you type and point without reaching up to the built-in controls. Home-work accessory guides from Samsung and Tom’s Guide include stands as an accessory category; neither establishes a medical benefit.

2. External keyboard
An external keyboard can make a desk arrangement more convenient, particularly if the laptop sits on a stand or you prefer a separate typing surface. Compare the keyboard’s layout and size, how it connects, and whether it supports your operating system. A wired or receiver-based model may use a port; Bluetooth avoids occupying a USB port if your laptop supports it. HP’s student accessory guide and Samsung’s guide cover external keyboards as options.
3. Wireless mouse
A mouse is optional, but it can be a useful alternative to the trackpad if you use the laptop often. Bluetooth models need Bluetooth support; a mouse with a USB receiver needs an available port or hub. A wired mouse is another option when you do not mind a cable. Samsung notes that USB connections can require an adapter on some laptops, so check your available ports before choosing.
4. External monitor
A monitor adds screen area to a fixed desk setup. Before selecting one, check that the laptop can output video through a connector the monitor accepts, such as HDMI, USB-C, or DisplayPort, and verify the supported resolution and cable. The connector’s presence alone does not establish that every display feature is supported. Samsung’s guide describes these connection routes subject to the laptop’s capabilities.

5. USB-C hub
A hub is a portable way to add a few connections when the laptop lacks ports for the devices you use. Choose one by the devices and displays you plan to connect, not just by its advertised port count. Check the type and number of ports, whether it supports the display output you need, and whether it provides power pass-through if you want to charge the laptop while using the hub. Belkin’s USB-C hubs, docks and adapters guide recommends checking connected devices, power needs, display resolution and connectors, and the capabilities of the laptop’s USB-C or Thunderbolt port.
6. Docking station
A dock is generally a better fit than a small hub when several peripherals will remain connected at a desk, especially if the setup includes one or more displays. Confirm that the laptop supports the dock’s connection type—USB-C or Thunderbolt—and that its capabilities match the monitors and other devices you intend to use. HP’s docking station guide also advises checking for USB-C or Thunderbolt support. Neither a dock nor a hub can add features the laptop itself does not support.
Hub, dock, or adapter: how to choose
These accessories overlap, but they suit different connection needs. A simple adapter handles a particular connection; a hub adds several ports in a portable form; a dock is more suited to a desk where peripherals stay attached. A product’s label is not a substitute for checking its supported functions.

- Choose an adapter when you need a specific connection, such as linking a laptop port to a cable or device.
- Choose a hub when portability matters and you need several added connections. Verify display support and charging pass-through if those are requirements.
- Choose a dock when you regularly connect multiple peripherals at a workstation. Match the dock to the laptop’s USB-C or Thunderbolt capabilities and to the display setup.
Before buying, list the devices you will connect, identify the laptop’s exact ports and their supported functions, and check the displays’ inputs and resolution requirements. This avoids assuming that two USB-C connectors—or two products labeled “dock”—offer the same capabilities.
Accessories for carrying and charging
7. Travel charger
A spare charger or one that can charge multiple devices may be useful if you regularly work away from your usual desk. Match it to the laptop’s supported charging standard, required wattage, connector, and cable. Examples shown in accessory roundups do not establish universal compatibility; check the laptop maker’s charging requirements before purchasing.
8. Laptop sleeve
A sleeve is a compact carrying layer for a laptop that will be placed inside another bag. Check the sleeve’s interior dimensions against the laptop, rather than relying on a label such as “13-inch,” and consider whether its padding suits how you carry the device. A sleeve should not be treated as a guarantee against drops or impacts.

9. Laptop backpack or carry bag
A dedicated laptop compartment can make it easier to carry a computer together with a charger and other items. Confirm the compartment dimensions fit the laptop and consider whether the bag has enough room for your usual load. A backpack or carry bag suits carrying more than the laptop alone; a sleeve is the slimmer choice when the laptop goes inside a separate bag. Lenovo’s laptop accessories FAQ and HP’s student guide discuss carrying options.

10. Portable SSD
A portable solid-state drive provides external storage for files you want to carry or keep separate from the laptop. Compare capacity, connector, and transfer needs, and decide how it fits into your backup plan. External storage does not upgrade the laptop’s internal memory. Samsung’s accessory guide distinguishes portable SSD storage from laptop memory.

An external webcam may help if the built-in camera is missing or does not meet your needs. Check its resolution, autofocus, mounting method, and operating-system support. Also decide whether you need a webcam with a microphone or will use a separate audio device. HP’s student guide covers webcams for virtual classes, while Lenovo’s FAQ includes webcams among laptop accessories.

12. Headset or earbuds with microphone
For calls, classes, or listening in shared spaces, choose audio gear based on comfort, microphone quality, connection type, and where you will use it. Over-ear headsets may suit longer sessions at a desk; compact earbuds are easier to carry. Lenovo and HP include audio accessories in their respective guides.
13. Mousepad
A mousepad can provide a more consistent tracking surface if your desk is unsuitable for a mouse or you want a dedicated surface. It is an optional convenience, not a requirement; HP lists one among possible student accessories.
14. Compatible stylus
A stylus is worth considering only if the laptop supports touchscreen or pen input. Styluses are not universal: Samsung describes its S Pen Pro for compatible 2-in-1 Galaxy laptops, not for every laptop. Check the laptop manufacturer’s compatibility information before choosing one.
