The strongest independent reading of the extended-look footage points to the base PS5 rendering at approximately 1440p internally, upscaling that image to a 4K output, and targeting a consistent 30 frames per second. A 60fps mode is considered extremely unlikely on current consoles. PS5 Pro is supported, but its exact resolution and performance targets have not been announced.
What can PS5 owners reasonably expect?
As of October 2026, the most defensible expectation is a graphics-first presentation rather than a choice between separate quality and performance modes. Digital Foundry’s examination of pre-release footage, reported by GamesRadar, identified an internal image around 1440p on the standard PlayStation 5, followed by a straightforward upscale to 4K. The same analysis observed output paced at about 30fps, with only very occasional single-frame drops in the material examined.

Those figures are measurements and interpretations of footage, not specifications published by Rockstar Games. The final retail build, launch patch, display settings and any later updates could change the result. Until Rockstar or Sony documents the modes, it is inaccurate to describe GTA VI as officially native 4K or officially locked to 30fps.

What the extended-look footage reveals
Internal resolution and upscale
Digital Foundry’s analysis, as reported by GamesRadar in 2026, identified the base PS5 footage as appearing to render internally at approximately 1440p before being upscaled to a 4K output. In practical terms, the console would produce a lower-resolution game image and reconstruct or enlarge it for a 4K television. A display receiving a 3840-by-2160 signal therefore does not prove that every frame was rendered natively at 3840 by 2160.
The wording matters: the observation was “about 1440p,” based on pre-release video, not a developer-confirmed fixed render resolution. The analysis does not establish whether the final game will hold that figure in every scene, whether a dynamic-resolution range is used, or which reconstruction details will ship in the retail version.
Frame pacing
The same examination described the footage as a relatively stable 30fps presentation. A 30fps frame-time cadence is approximately 33.3 milliseconds per frame. Digital Foundry reportedly saw only very occasional single-frame drops, so the notable characteristic was pacing consistency rather than a claim that every frame in every mission will meet an unbreakable lock.

- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Because the material was captured before launch, it cannot answer how the final build behaves during the most demanding combinations of traffic, weather, crowds, combat and online activity. It does, however, explain why a 30fps target is currently the most credible expectation for the standard PS5.
Is GTA 6 30fps on PS5?
Based on the analyzed footage, 30fps is the apparent target on the base console. That is different from an official statement that the game is permanently locked to 30fps. Rockstar has not published a numeric frame-rate specification, and no launch settings menu has been documented by the publisher.
For players, a well-paced 30fps output means a new frame arrives roughly every 33.3ms. Camera movement and driving will look less fluid than at 60fps, but consistent pacing generally feels better than an unstable rate that repeatedly fluctuates. The footage’s reported occasional single-frame drops suggest that the developers were prioritizing a steady cadence over pushing the highest possible peak rate.

A 120Hz television does not turn a 30fps game into a 60fps game. It can display the signal cleanly, and compatible systems may offer variable-refresh behavior, but the game engine still has to generate additional frames to provide true 60fps motion.

Will GTA 6 run at 60fps on PS5?
Current evidence says a 60fps mode is extremely unlikely on either current PS5 model unless the final design makes substantial compromises. Digital Foundry’s conclusion, quoted by TechRadar, was that the focus was on maximizing visual detail at a fixed 30fps across platforms. Its analysis also argued that there is no practical way to recover enough GPU and, particularly, CPU time for a 16.7ms update interval without compromising the game world.
The technical distinction is important. Doubling from 30fps to 60fps does not merely require displaying twice as many pictures; the engine must complete simulation, animation, streaming, rendering and post-processing in about half the time. GTA VI’s dense open world and crowd simulation create heavy CPU work. Pedestrians, vehicles, traffic behavior, physics, artificial intelligence and world streaming all compete for that shorter frame budget.
That is why a theoretical performance mode could require more than a lower resolution. It might also involve reduced crowd density, shorter simulation distances, simpler effects, fewer objects, lower animation quality or other changes that have not been announced. There is currently no Rockstar confirmation of such a mode for launch, and a future patch should not be assumed.
Is the PS5 version native 4K?
The available analysis does not support calling the base PS5 version native 4K. It points instead to an internal resolution of roughly 1440p with an upscale to a 4K output. Native 4K means the game renders the full 3840-by-2160 pixel grid for the frame; an upscaled image starts from fewer rendered pixels and is reconstructed or enlarged afterward.

Upscaling is not automatically a flaw. Rendering fewer pixels can leave more GPU time for lighting, geometry, reflections, vegetation, animation and other elements that shape a large open world. The visual result depends on the reconstruction method, temporal data, anti-aliasing and scene detail, none of which have been fully specified for the final PS5 build.
Do not infer a fixed 1440p render resolution from one video either. The footage supports an approximate observation under particular capture conditions. Rockstar could alter internal resolution, reconstruction, sharpening or output behavior before release, and no public specification currently rules out dynamic scaling.
Base PS5 versus PS5 Pro
Both consoles are officially supported, but only the platform support itself is confirmed. The following separates publisher facts from independent observations.
| Comparison point | Base PS5 | PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Official platform support | Confirmed by Sony for November 19, 2026 | Confirmed by Sony for November 19, 2026 |
| Observed or reported internal resolution | Approximately 1440p in Digital Foundry’s pre-release footage analysis, reported by GamesRadar | Not stated publicly by Rockstar or Sony; no equivalent numeric observation is confirmed |
| Upscaling or reconstruction | Footage appeared to use a simple upscale to 4K, according to the same analysis | Digital Foundry’s discussion suggests possible image-quality gains from PSSR, but the shipped method is unconfirmed |
| Frame-rate target | Approximately 30fps in the analyzed footage | Not stated publicly by Rockstar or Sony |
| Observed stability | Relatively stable and well-paced, with very occasional single-frame drops in the analyzed footage | No public test establishes a final frame-rate or frame-pacing result |
| Dedicated performance mode | Not announced by Rockstar | Not announced by Rockstar |
The Pro’s additional GPU capacity could improve image quality, reconstruction quality or visual settings. It does not automatically remove CPU limits. GamesRadar’s report emphasized that the crowd and world simulation workloads can remain CPU-bound, while TechRadar’s account of Digital Foundry’s comments made the same broader point about the difficulty of reaching 60fps.

What a 30fps, 1440p-based presentation means in play
- Motion: Driving, rapid camera pans and aiming will have less temporal fluidity than a 60fps game, even if frame pacing is consistent.
- Image quality: A 4K television will receive a 4K output, but fine detail originates from an approximately 1440p internal image in the analyzed footage.
- World detail: Holding 30fps gives the engine a larger per-frame budget for simulation and visual complexity than a 60fps target would.
- Console choice: The base PS5 is the only model for which a specific observed target has been reported; the Pro should not be purchased on the assumption of 60fps.
- Display settings: A television’s 120Hz capability, motion interpolation or game mode cannot substitute for a game-engine performance mode.
How to verify the final result at launch
When the retail build is available, use the game’s own documentation and measured behavior rather than trailer resolution or television output labels. A practical check list is:
- Read the launch notes and settings screen. Look for named graphics options such as quality, performance, fidelity, frame rate or VRR. Treat an option as confirmed only if Rockstar documents what it changes.
- Check the console’s video output information. This tells you the signal sent to the display, not necessarily the game’s internal render resolution. A 4K signal alone is not proof of native 4K rendering.
- Observe frame pacing in demanding scenes. Test dense streets, heavy traffic, weather transitions and combat rather than relying on a quiet opening area. Consistent 33.3ms delivery is the meaningful 30fps benchmark.
- Compare both PS5 models only with the same patch. A Pro result measured on a later update is not a clean comparison with an earlier base-PS5 build.
- Check Rockstar’s patch notes after launch. Resolution scaling, reconstruction, VRR behavior and performance can change without changing the console version name.
Independent measurements made after release will be more informative than pre-release footage because they can test the complete game, current patch and repeatable scenes. Until then, the 1440p-and-30fps description should remain explicitly attributed to the analyzed footage.
What could still change before November 19, 2026?
Rockstar may publish graphics-mode details, alter rendering technology, add a launch-day patch or clarify how PS5 Pro enhancements work. Sony’s product listing establishes the release platforms and date, not the final technical targets. A later update could improve image reconstruction or stability, but there is no evidence today that it will add 60fps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor that reason, buyers should distinguish three levels of certainty: platform support is official; the approximate 1440p internal image and approximately 30fps output are independent observations of pre-release footage; and any claim about native 4K, a locked frame rate or a Pro-specific performance mode remains unconfirmed.
Bottom line
Plan for GTA VI on the standard PS5 as a visually ambitious, approximately 30fps game whose analyzed footage rendered internally around 1440p and upscaled to 4K. Do not describe it as officially native 4K or officially locked to 30fps yet. A 60fps mode is currently considered extremely unlikely because the open-world simulation places substantial CPU as well as GPU demands on the console. PS5 Pro support is real, but its resolution and frame-rate advantages have not been specified; the most credible expectation is improved image quality rather than a guaranteed 60fps presentation.
