It is Valve’s public-testing Proton branch, not a universal repair or a guarantee that every game will work better.
What Proton Experimental is
Proton is Valve’s Steam compatibility tool, based on Wine, that helps Windows games run on Linux. Steam supplies several Proton versions that users can select. Valve says most users should use the versions provided through Steam. Valve’s Proton project documentation explains the tool and its options.

Valve describes Experimental as intended for public testing of experimental features. Stable follows extensive quality assurance and a public release-candidate phase. Valve says games listed in the Experimental changelog as working only in that version are tested for regressions before release. Experimental is distinct from Proton Bleeding Edge, which Valve describes as automated and untested. Valve’s Proton Versions wiki sets out these distinctions.

How a Proton update can improve a game
Windows games rely on APIs and expected system behavior that Linux does not provide in exactly the same way. Proton implements or translates parts of that environment. If a game runs into a compatibility problem, a Proton change that addresses the relevant behavior may let it launch or work correctly where an earlier version did not. Whether it helps depends on the game, the particular change and the system running it.

Experimental changes can include game-specific fixes and updates to components in Proton’s compatibility stack. In its September 11, 2026 Experimental changelog, Valve listed changes from Proton 11.0-2, new playable games, title-specific fixes, a Wine Mono update, and updates to development versions of vkd3d-proton, DXVK, vkd3d, DXVK-NVAPI and FEX. Valve’s Proton changelog records the dated entries.
That entry illustrates how specific a fix can be. Valve listed fixes for missing character voice lines in STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT, an incorrect splash image in EA App titles, a command prompt appearing on first launch in Borderlands 4, fonts in Achron, rendering in The I of the Dragon and unreliable controller operation in Far Cry 4. It also listed newly playable titles, including City Car Driving, Blair Witch VR and Welcome to Elderfield Demo. These examples do not mean every listed change applies to every game or computer.

Why Experimental can also make things worse
New compatibility changes can introduce regressions: a game or feature that worked in one build may stop working in another. Valve’s September 11, 2026 changelog says a Proton 11 regression affecting the RaceRoom Racing Experience HUD was fixed. An August 18, 2026 entry records an Experimental regression affecting keyboard controls in XCOM 2, alongside fixes for other regressions. Check dated changelog entries for your game or symptom rather than assuming a newer version is automatically better.

The documented examples show that fixes can target individual behaviors. They do not establish that Experimental will resolve every problem, including restrictions imposed by anti-cheat systems, unsupported hardware or an issue introduced by a game update.

Should you use Proton Experimental?
Try it when Stable has a problem and the Experimental changelog mentions your game or a symptom that matches what you see. If Stable works and you do not need a particular Experimental change, staying with Stable is a reasonable choice because it goes through more extensive QA. Neither version is the best choice for every title; the useful comparison is how each behaves with the same game on your system.
- Stable: A better fit when you prefer the flavor that follows extensive QA and a public release-candidate phase.
- Experimental: Worth trying when you need a newer compatibility change or a game is listed as working only in Experimental; it can also contain regressions.
How to change Proton versions for one game
Steam’s labels can change over time, but the version choice is in the game’s Properties and compatibility controls. Valve also documents selecting supplied Proton versions through Steam Play settings.

- Select Proton Experimental from the available versions, then close Properties and launch the game.
- To compare, return to the same control and select the previous Proton version. Reproduce the same symptom under the same conditions and note which version is selected.
If the game still fails
First check the game’s dated entries in Valve’s Proton changelog for a relevant fix or known regression. Avoid piling on unrelated launch options: changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell whether the Proton version affected the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor more diagnosis, Valve documents per-game launch options and the PROTON_LOG option for generating a log. Its runtime options can also override environment settings; Valve says removing an override returns behavior to the previous state rather than permanently changing the Wine prefix. See the Proton project documentation for the documented options and logging guidance.
