Before changing Steam Deck settings, search ProtonDB for the exact game and inspect recent player reports. Use those reports as practical clues—not as Valve approval or a guarantee—then compare them with the game’s current Steam compatibility details.
Find the game’s ProtonDB page

Search ProtonDB for the game’s exact title, then open its game page. Valve’s Proton wiki documents the direct report-page format as

Read the individual reports, not just the aggregate rating. ProtonDB gathers player-submitted experiences with Proton and summarizes them; it is community evidence, not Valve’s compatibility certification. ProtonDB describes its focus as gaming know-how from the Linux and Steam Deck community.

Extract the details that matter
For each useful report, note when it was posted and the conditions it describes. Prioritize reports explicitly tested on Steam Deck, or on a closely matching Linux and Proton setup, and record:

Proton version: A report may depend on a particular compatibility-tool version.

Launch options or other changes: Note any command-line options or settings the player used.

What worked and what did not: Separate whether the game launched from controls, readability, stability, and performance.

Limitations: Capture crashes, glitches, degraded performance, or other problems the reporter mentions.
Do not assume reports describe identical hardware, SteamOS versions, settings, or game builds. Several recent reports describing the same setup and outcome provide a more relevant clue than one older report, but none guarantees your result.
Compare ProtonDB with Steam’s compatibility details
Steam’s Deck compatibility review and ProtonDB answer different questions. Valve evaluates games against Steam Deck criteria, including system support and Proton or middleware support where relevant; ProtonDB relays player experience. Valve says that games in the Deck Library automatically show a compatibility rating indicating the kind of experience players can expect. Read the details in the game’s Steam Store page or Library rather than treating the badge alone as an explanation. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility page describes the review.
If Steam labels a game Playable or Unsupported, Steam Support directs users to the game’s Store compatibility section to see which Verified requirements are not met. Try a compatibility tool only as a controlled test
If recent ProtonDB reports point to a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, you can test it for that game through Steam’s per-game setting. Steam Support gives this route:

Open Library and highlight the game.

Open Menu > Properties > Compatibility.

Select Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose the tool you want to test.

Change one thing at a time and compare the result with the game’s original behavior. A tool mentioned in a report is a troubleshooting experiment, not a guaranteed fix; if it does not help, undo the change before testing another variable.

Compatibility can change as games are updated, Deck features evolve, or new Proton releases arrive. Valve says its compatibility review is ongoing and results may be refreshed as those changes occur. An older ProtonDB report or Steam status may therefore describe a different game build or software context from yours. Valve’s compatibility-review documentation explains that review process.

When ProtonDB and Steam appear to disagree, compare the dates and test conditions, then focus on the exact symptom: launch failure, controls, readability, stability, or performance. A community report can describe a successful workaround even when a Verified requirement is unmet; conversely, an official rating does not establish that every current setup will behave identically.
