Nintendo 64 vs. PlayStation: Which Classic Games Hold Up Better?

N64 stands out for 3D platforming and adventure; PS1 offers strong RPG and racing picks. Compare classic games by the kind of play you want today.

Neither console wins for everyone. Nintendo 64 is the better starting point if you want distinctive 3D platforming, adventure, or quick multiplayer-friendly play. The original PlayStation has a stronger case if your tastes lean toward role-playing games and a broader mix of racing experiences. The most useful answer is to compare the games you would actually enjoy playing now—not to treat nostalgia or an old review score as a universal verdict.

What “holds up” means when you play these games today

A classic game can remain enjoyable for different reasons. For this comparison, “holds up” means that its controls and camera are usable, its goals and pacing remain engaging, and its levels, encounters, or repeatable loop still give you a reason to play. That is a practical way to judge individual games, not a published standardized test of either console’s library.

The examples below are a representative shortlist, not a complete ranking. Retrospective coverage discusses several N64 games, while the PlayStation examples come from Metacritic’s historical year-by-year listings. The available sources do not provide a controlled, present-day head-to-head play test of both libraries.

Where the Nintendo 64 makes its strongest case

Super Mario 64: open-ended 3D platforming

Super Mario 64 is a useful benchmark for early 3D platforming: its appeal rests on moving through spaces and pursuing varied objectives, rather than repeating one kind of obstacle course. Metacritic’s 1996 listing gives it a 94 Metascore, a historical critic aggregate that reflects past reception—not a measurement of how easy or enjoyable it is to play today. Metacritic’s 1996 Nintendo 64 and PS1 listings describe objectives including obstacle courses, battles, and exploration; GamesRadar’s retrospective also points to the game’s varied level design. GamesRadar’s N64 retrospective

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo 64 (Renewed)
  • Sleek Black N64 Console: A classic Nintendo 64 reimagined in a bold black finish, blending retro charm with a modern aesthetic.
  • Two Vibrant Controllers: Jump straight into multiplayer fun with a red and blue controller included, perfect for head-to-head gaming sessions.
  • Save & Store with Ease: The included 256KB memory card gives you plenty of space to save game progress across your favorite titles.
  • Modern Display Ready: An HDMI and cable are included, delivering a clean, high-quality connection to today's TVs right out of the box.
  • Everything You Need to Play: Complete with a power and all essentiala, this is ready for instant setup — ideal for nostalgic fans and curious newcomers alike.

Ocarina of Time: an adventure built around dungeons and combat

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has a different staying power: its adventure structure, dungeons, boss encounters, and Z-targeting combat give its exploration a clear shape. GamesRadar’s retrospective recommends the 3DS remaster as a way to play today. That is a recommendation for a distinct version, not proof that the original and remaster have identical controls or presentation. GamesRadar’s N64 retrospective

Wave Race 64 and Pokémon Snap: focused play beyond the blockbusters

Wave Race 64 is a racing pick for players who enjoy its water-based handling and track design; GamesRadar also notes its limited number of tracks. Pokémon Snap offers a different kind of replay loop: travel through a constrained, on-rails course, take photos, and try to improve them or capture Pokémon behaving in new ways. The trade-off is built into that format: it is focused and repeatable, but offers less freedom of movement than an open exploration game. GamesRadar’s N64 retrospective

Where the original PlayStation has the edge

Grandia and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue for RPG players

The PlayStation examples include role-playing games as well as action and racing. Metacritic’s 1999 listing includes Grandia, and its 2000 listing includes Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, which the page describes as multi-disc. These listings establish them as representative PS1 RPGs to consider; they do not, by themselves, establish modern accessibility, playtime, or a present-day quality ranking. For a physical copy of Lunar 2, the exact edition and release region matter. Metacritic’s 1999 listings · Metacritic’s 2000 listings

Ridge Racer Type 4 and Crash Team Racing for racing

Ridge Racer Type 4 and Crash Team Racing both appear on Metacritic’s 1999 PlayStation list. They make racing a genuine cross-platform comparison rather than an N64-only strength: consider Wave Race 64 alongside these PS1 picks if racing is your priority. Metacritic’s page reproduces a historical Official PlayStation Magazine review fragment for Ridge Racer Type 4; it should be read as period review material, not a current assessment. How to play them now

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Nintendo’s 2026 service page says a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required for its Nintendo 64 Classics collection. Membership is sold separately; a Nintendo Account is required for online features, availability varies by country, and terms apply. Nintendo’s claim of over 270 titles covers Nintendo Classics across several systems, not more than 270 N64 games. Check the current game list and subscription terms for your country before choosing this route. Nintendo: Play it loud with Nintendo Classics!

Original N64 hardware

On an original console, the condition of the controller and the television connection affect convenience, not the design quality of the games. GamesRadar’s 2026 setup guide warns that used N64 joysticks may be worn or wobbly and notes that a modern television without composite or S-video inputs may need an adapter or upscaler. It also identifies compatible modern controllers as an option. GamesRadar’s guide to playing N64 games

PlayStation Classic

GamesRadar’s 2026 guide describes the PlayStation Classic as a mini-console with 20 built-in PS1 games and HDMI output. Its selection is fixed and has notable omissions; the guide reported it as discontinued with second-hand stock at the time it was published. That is a dated availability snapshot, not a guarantee of what is currently for sale. GamesRadar’s retro-console guide

So, which games hold up better?

For 3D platforming and adventure, start with the N64’s Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. For PlayStation RPGs or a broader set of racing examples, explore Grandia, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, Ridge Racer Type 4, and Crash Team Racing. These are recommendations by genre and play style, not a claim that one full library is objectively better. The historical critic scores and retrospectives identify useful candidates, but they do not replace a standardized present-day comparison of both consoles’ games.
