The game must implement a particular upscaler, and the phone must support that rendering path. An NPU is not always required: Qualcomm’s Adreno Neural Fusion can use Adreno matrix cores or, on some devices, route processing through an NPU, while Unreal Engine documents a mobile-optimized upscaler that does not depend on neural hardware.
What matters most: the game and its rendering path
A phone’s chipset can advertise graphics or AI features without a particular game using them. Check that the exact mobile game supports the named upscaler on the exact handset model, and whether it is enabled for that device or graphics API. Qualcomm’s developer guidance describes upscaling as an integration task: the game must supply and arrange the rendering data the technique needs.

Snapdragon Game Super Resolution
Qualcomm describes its original Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR) as a single-pass spatial upscaler optimized for Snapdragon Adreno GPUs. Unlike a temporal approach, it works from the current frame rather than using information from earlier frames. Qualcomm also describes range-aware dynamic scaling tailored to the Adreno pipeline. These are Qualcomm’s technology and performance claims, not independent comparisons of retail phones. Qualcomm’s GSR overview

Snapdragon Game Super Resolution 2
Qualcomm’s October 22, 2024 article describes GSR 2 as using color information from previously rendered frames. For a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 implementation example targeting 1260 × 2800 output, Qualcomm reported a developer-feedback target of under 2 milliseconds at maximum GPU frequency; it also reported a 1-millisecond cost for one optimized fragment-shader variant in that context. Those vendor-reported implementation figures are not promises of equivalent results on other phones or games. Developers can choose among variants, and Qualcomm says code, plugins, and samples are available. Qualcomm’s GSR 2 overview
Adreno Neural Fusion
Qualcomm introduced Adreno Neural Fusion (ANF) in September 2026 as a developer-integrated rendering pipeline combining super resolution and frame generation. Its SDK describes reconstructing full-resolution output from half-resolution, jittered input and synthesizing an intermediate frame. The pipeline uses color, depth, and motion-vector buffers. Qualcomm says inference runs on Adreno matrix cores where a device has them; on devices without those cores, the SDK may route techniques through an NPU using GPU–NPU interoperation. The game still has to integrate the pipeline and provide the required buffers. Qualcomm’s ANF overview and ANF SDK documentation

Unreal Engine Mobile FSR
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation describes Mobile FSR as rendering at a lower resolution and upscaling to the device’s native output. It identifies a mobile-optimized FSR 1.0 option. This is an example of mobile upscaling that does not make a neural processor a universal prerequisite. A game’s engine integration and target-device support still determine whether the option is available. Epic’s Unreal Engine FSR documentation

What to check before buying a phone
- Confirm support in the game. Look for the exact upscaler name and confirmation that the mobile version supports it on the handset model you are considering. A general claim that a game or chipset uses “AI” is not enough.
- Check the graphics platform. For Qualcomm GSR paths, verify the exact Snapdragon platform and Adreno GPU. Qualcomm’s product briefs list GSR on Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and GSR 2.0 on Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. Those are platform-level feature claims, not confirmation that every phone using the platform—or every game—exposes the feature. Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 product brief; Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 product brief
- Treat the NPU as one possible route, not a guarantee. For ANF, Qualcomm describes execution on Adreno matrix cores when available, with possible NPU routing on devices without them. The game must still implement the SDK’s rendering path.
- Consider sustained performance and heat. Rendering internally at a lower resolution can reduce GPU work and bandwidth, but it does not guarantee a stable frame rate. The phone’s thermal design, software, power limits, and the game’s workload matter. Qualcomm describes intended thermal benefits for ANF, but the cited sources do not provide independent comparisons between handsets.
- Match the display to the game. Consider the phone’s output resolution and refresh rate alongside the settings and frame rate you want. Upscaling alone cannot ensure a stable frame rate or improved image quality in every scene.
When comparing phones, prioritize verified support for your game, then sustained graphics performance and heat behavior, followed by display characteristics, battery behavior, and price. This is a practical buying order, not a ranking published by a phone maker.

What the available specifications do—and do not—tell you
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 brief says GSR 2.0 can upscale low-resolution scenes “in up to 4K.” That is a platform capability claim, not evidence that every supported game renders at 4K. Similarly, Qualcomm’s 2026 ANF overview mentions 18 MB of Adreno High Performance Memory as part of a next-generation Adreno design; that figure is not a consumer minimum for an upscaling phone.
The cited official materials do not establish a universal minimum for RAM, storage, price, or chipset tier. They also do not provide independent, cross-platform phone benchmarks. The right purchase decision therefore depends on verified game-and-device support, rather than a supposed universal “AI gaming” spec.
