AI upscaling takes extra processing, but it can also let a game render fewer pixels before reconstructing the image at a higher resolution. If the rendering savings exceed the upscaler’s cost, the phone may use less power; if not, it may use more. The result depends on the game, phone, settings and how long you play.
Does AI upscaling drain battery?
It can, but the label “AI” alone does not predict battery use. An upscaler adds computation. In exchange, rendering at a lower internal resolution can reduce the GPU work of shading pixels and moving image data. The net effect depends on which side of that trade-off is larger in a particular game and device.

Qualcomm describes its Adreno Neural Fusion super-resolution path as reconstructing a full-resolution image from a half-resolution, jittered input. The GPU compute step uses color, depth, motion vectors and jitter information, and Qualcomm says keeping intermediate state in Adreno High Performance Memory can avoid some transfers to external system memory. These are explanations of Qualcomm’s design and intended benefits, not a guarantee of lower power use on every phone or in every game. Qualcomm’s Adreno Neural Fusion overview describes the approach.
Other systems use different methods. Qualcomm describes the original Snapdragon Game Super Resolution as a single-pass spatial upscaler that combines upscaling and sharpening; GSR 2 uses temporal inputs, including color, depth and motion vectors. Samsung describes Exynos Neural Super Sampling as reconstructing a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. Those vendor descriptions explain implementations, but they are not controlled, independent comparisons of battery or temperature. Qualcomm’s GSR overview, its GSR 2 article and Samsung’s ENSS description outline these approaches.

- Large Cooling Area & Plug and Play: About 4.65 sq. Inches extreme thermal conductive cooling area to cover the CPU and battery module, protecting your phone from blackening or sudden shut-off. Use the C-type cable(included), plug and play.
What the published timing figures mean
Qualcomm reports that its two-pass fragment-shader GSR 2 variant took 0.905 ms at 2.0× scaling, from 630×1400 to 1260×2800, on the described Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 implementation. The same variant was reported at 1.024 ms for 1.7× scaling and 1.107 ms for 1.5× scaling. These are Qualcomm implementation timings from 2024, not measurements of battery life, phone temperature or a typical user’s gaming session. Qualcomm’s GSR 2 article gives the configurations.
Will AI upscaling make my phone heat up while gaming?
It might, but it might also reduce the rendering load. Android explains that high CPU and GPU utilization generates heat. If the phone gets too hot, Android can downclock the CPU and GPU; that thermal throttling affects performance and battery drain. As a result, a brief session may not reveal what happens during sustained play. Android’s game power guidance covers heat, throttling and display power.

The phone’s cooling design and thermal limits matter, and those vary between devices and manufacturers. Qualcomm’s developer guidance recommends testing on physical phones, both plugged in and unplugged, and identifies overdraw and shader complexity as common contributors to GPU load and thermal strain. Ambient conditions, the game scene and session length can also affect what you observe. Qualcomm’s Adreno low-power gaming guidance discusses device-level variability.

A game may use the GPU capacity saved by lower-resolution rendering to raise its frame rate or add other visual effects. In that case, the image may look sharper or motion may appear smoother without the phone drawing less power overall. A higher frame-rate target can itself increase workload. Frame generation is also distinct from resolution upscaling: Qualcomm’s Adreno Neural Fusion description says its frame-generation technique inserts an intermediate generated frame between rendered frames. That can increase apparent smoothness, but it still uses compute resources and does not establish lower energy use.

Keep refresh rate and frame-rate target fixed when comparing upscaling. Android notes that a display refresh rate higher than the game’s target can consume extra display power without improving gameplay. Changing refresh rate or the frame-rate cap at the same time makes it harder to isolate the upscaler’s effect.

- Use the same phone and game scene. Choose a repeatable scene or sequence and keep the game version and device unchanged.
- Fix the other settings. Keep brightness, network mode, refresh rate, frame-rate cap and graphics settings the same. Change only the upscaling setting if possible.
- Separate features. If the game exposes super resolution and frame generation separately, compare them separately rather than treating them as one setting.
- Play for a sustained, equal session. Record battery change and temperature, and pay attention to frame pacing as well as average smoothness. A short run can miss throttling that appears after the phone warms up.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. Keep charging status and surroundings consistent; Qualcomm recommends physical-device checks both plugged in and unplugged.
Compare image quality, sustained frame pacing, battery use and temperature together. Do not attribute the full difference to upscaling if one mode also runs at a higher frame rate or changes other graphics settings.
