What PC Specs Do You Need to Run Squadron 42?

The current Squadron 42 Steam minimums call for Windows 11, a quad-core CPU, 16 GB RAM, an 8 GB VRAM GPU, DirectX 12 and 150 GB free space. Recommended performance specs are not published.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To meet the current published minimum for Squadron 42, you need a 64-bit Windows 11 PC with a quad-core Intel i7 Sandy Bridge-or-newer or AMD Bulldozer-or-newer processor, 16 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM, DirectX 12, broadband internet, and 150 GB of available storage. Roberts Space Industries’ general requirements for its games also specify an SSD. These are minimum requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics quality.

The game-specific Steam listing, current as of October 13, 2026, is the clearest source for the minimums. It lists Q2 2027 as the planned release window; that is a target window, not a guaranteed date. Steam also does not provide meaningful recommended CPU or GPU specifications, so there is not yet an official higher-performance build target to shop against.

Current minimum PC requirements

The following table reflects the Squadron 42 Steam store listing as it appeared on October 13, 2026. Steam calls these minimum requirements. They identify the floor published for the game; they do not establish how well a PC at that floor will perform.

Component Published minimum What to check on your PC
Operating system Windows 11, 64-bit Confirm both the Windows edition and that the installation is 64-bit.
Processor Quad-core Intel i7 Sandy Bridge or later, or AMD Bulldozer or later Check the exact processor model and that it has at least four cores. The listing gives family-era thresholds, not a current model recommendation.
Memory 16 GB RAM Check installed system memory, not graphics-card VRAM.
Graphics card DirectX 11.1-compatible card with 8 GB VRAM Confirm the GPU model, its dedicated video memory, and DirectX compatibility.
DirectX Version 12 required Check the DirectX version reported by Windows. Steam separately describes the graphics card as DirectX 11.1-compatible.
Internet Broadband connection Steam does not specify a minimum speed or bandwidth figure.
Storage 150 GB available Check free space on the drive where you intend to install. RSI’s general CIG requirements specify an SSD.

Steam names Cloud Imperium Games as developer and Roberts Space Industries as publisher. Its description presents the game as a cinematic, single-player space adventure in the UEE Navy. The hardware list is therefore for this specific game, rather than a general estimate for space games or a general PC gaming standard.

How to interpret the CPU, graphics, and DirectX entries

The CPU names are historical thresholds, not shopping advice

“Intel i7 Sandy Bridge or later” and “AMD Bulldozer or later” identify processor families and eras, while the quad-core requirement supplies a core-count condition. These labels do not name a modern CPU model or explain how a processor in one family compares with a processor from another. They also do not specify clock speed, cache, or an expected frame rate. A CPU that appears to meet the listed threshold should be treated as meeting the stated minimum only—not as evidence of a particular experience.

When checking a used PC or considering an upgrade, look up the exact processor model rather than relying on a seller’s broad description such as “Core i7.” The generation matters because the Steam listing refers to Sandy Bridge-era Intel i7 processors and later, not every Intel i7 ever made. For AMD, it names Bulldozer and later. Confirm that the processor has four cores as well as checking its family. The listing does not provide a separate performance ranking or a recommended replacement model.

8 GB VRAM and 16 GB RAM are different things

The 16 GB memory figure refers to system RAM, while the 8 GB VRAM figure refers to memory available on the graphics card. They are separate checks: a PC with 16 GB of system RAM does not thereby satisfy the VRAM requirement, and a GPU with 8 GB of VRAM does not make up for insufficient system RAM. Integrated graphics use system memory differently from a discrete card; the listing specifically calls for a graphics card with 8 GB VRAM, so do not assume that a PC’s total shared memory figure is equivalent.

Keep the two DirectX statements intact

Steam lists DirectX 12 as required and describes the graphics card as DirectX 11.1-compatible. Those are two separate entries in the published requirements. Do not rewrite the card requirement as “DirectX 12 GPU” or discard one of the entries as an error. The listing does not explain the technical relationship between them or give a more detailed feature-level specification, so the sensible check is to verify both the card’s stated compatibility and the DirectX version reported by Windows.

Steam and RSI publish different requirement descriptions

Roberts Space Industries’ support article, updated December 17, 2025, gives general minimum requirements for CIG games, including Squadron 42. It lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4 GB of memory, a quad-core CPU with AVX, AVX2 and FMA3, 16 GB or more RAM, and a 150+ GB SSD. Steam’s newer, game-specific list instead names Windows 11, 8 GB VRAM, and DirectX 12, and it describes the processor threshold differently.

These pages should not be merged into a single hybrid checklist. For the current Squadron 42-specific minimum, use the Steam listing. RSI’s page is useful for its general installation context, especially its SSD requirement, but it is not a newer replacement for the Steam game listing. In particular, do not use the older Windows 10 allowance or 4 GB graphics-memory figure to lower the current Steam minimum.

The distinction matters if your computer runs Windows 10 or has a graphics card with 4 GB VRAM: those details appear in RSI’s general CIG requirements, but they do not match the current game-specific Steam minimum. Conversely, the Steam minimum table does not itself say that the drive must be an SSD; that requirement comes from RSI’s broader support guidance. Treat the two sources according to what each one covers.

What the published minimum does—and does not—tell you

Meeting every listed minimum is the most that can be concluded from the published figures: your PC matches the stated baseline. The figures are not test results. Neither the Steam listing nor the RSI requirements cited here establish a guaranteed average frame rate, a target resolution, a graphics preset, or how smoothly the game will run. Do not infer a performance promise from a processor-era label, a RAM amount, or the graphics-memory threshold.

Steam’s Recommended section offers no useful higher-end target: it says only that a 64-bit processor and operating system are required. It does not give recommended CPU or graphics-card models, additional memory guidance, a resolution, a quality setting, or a frame-rate goal. As a result, there is no official recommended build in these sources to use as a basis for buying extra hardware specifically for Squadron 42. A released build and fuller official specifications would be needed to make a grounded performance-target recommendation.

For an upgrade decision, separate the question “Does my PC meet the published minimum?” from “Will an upgrade produce the performance I want?” The first can be answered by comparing your components to Steam’s list. The second cannot be answered from these requirements alone. Independent performance testing of a released build would be needed to connect particular hardware to measured settings and frame rates; no such benchmark figures are established here.

Check your own PC before upgrading

RSI points users to Windows’ DXDiag or System Information utilities to inspect their hardware. These checks help you identify what is installed; they do not benchmark the unreleased game or certify that the PC will run it at a particular quality level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check Windows and processor details. Open Windows System Information and review the operating system and processor entries. Verify that Windows is 64-bit and Windows 11, then compare the exact CPU model with Steam’s named family thresholds and confirm the four-core condition.
  2. Check system memory. In System Information, review the installed physical memory amount. Compare system RAM with the 16 GB minimum; do not use the GPU’s VRAM figure for this check.
  3. Check the graphics card and VRAM. Open DXDiag and inspect its display information for the graphics-device name and memory details. Verify the exact card’s DirectX 11.1 compatibility using its specifications, and confirm that it has 8 GB VRAM. The Windows display report can help identify the card, but the Steam requirement is about the card’s capabilities.
  4. Check DirectX. In DXDiag, review the DirectX version reported by Windows and compare it with Steam’s DirectX 12 requirement. Keep this check distinct from confirming the card’s DirectX 11.1 compatibility.
  5. Check free storage and drive type. Review the drive’s free space and whether it is an SSD. Steam calls for 150 GB available; RSI’s general CIG requirements say an SSD is required. A drive’s advertised total capacity is not the same as available space at install time.
  6. Record the results before shopping. Write down the operating system, exact CPU and GPU models, installed RAM, GPU VRAM, drive type, and free space. This makes it possible to identify a specific unmet requirement instead of replacing parts based on a vague “gaming PC” label.

Planning upgrades without overbuying

If one component falls below the listed minimum, check compatibility and cost before choosing an upgrade. The requirement list does not identify the best replacement part, and compatibility depends on the particular computer. These are standard PC purchase checks, not additional Squadron 42 requirements.

  • Crucial 3-year limited warranty
  • Graphics card: Confirm motherboard slot and case clearance, power-supply capacity and connectors, and whether the card will fit the case. Match the card’s VRAM and DirectX compatibility to the published minimum rather than relying on the product name alone.
  • RAM: Check the motherboard’s supported memory type and capacity, the number of available slots, and the modules already installed. A system that currently has less than 16 GB may require a compatible upgrade configuration; the game listing does not specify a particular RAM generation or module layout.
  • Storage: Confirm the drive interface supported by the PC and ensure the destination has enough free room for the stated 150 GB requirement. RSI recommends an SSD for CIG games and notes additional installation and pagefile space in its RSI Launcher/Star Citizen context. That context does not establish an exact additional space figure for the Steam installation of Squadron 42, so do not treat 150 GB as a guaranteed total-drive capacity.
  • Whole-system cost: Compare the total cost of the necessary components with the value of the PC and your broader needs. Since no official performance target is published, paying more than the minimum for a hoped-for frame-rate improvement cannot be justified from this requirement list alone.

A specific parts recommendation would require your current PC specifications, upgrade constraints, and budget. Without those details, the useful decision is to identify the failed minimum and verify the machine’s compatibility—not to prescribe a GPU, processor, SSD model, or complete new build.

Release timing and availability

As of October 13, 2026, Steam says Squadron 42 is not yet available on Steam and lists Q2 2027 as its planned release window. That window does not guarantee a particular launch day, and minimum requirements can change before release. RSI’s support article updated February 4, 2026, said the game remained in development and was unavailable for download, with access for eligible RSI accounts after development, testing, and release. PC Gamer reported on October 10, 2026, that game director Chris Roberts had said in August that the game was delayed out of 2026; the current Steam page is the primary source for the listed Q2 2027 window.

Because the game is not yet available, the published minimums should be treated as current specifications rather than a final performance guarantee. Check the official game listing again closer to release if you are buying or upgrading a PC now, particularly if your decision depends on a particular operating-system version, storage requirement, or graphics card.
