What Causes Dielectric Leakage in Chip Capacitors—and How to Reduce It

MLCC leakage can be normal or a sign of insulation damage. Learn how to separate transient current from steady leakage and reduce crack-related failures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In a multilayer ceramic chip capacitor (MLCC), a small steady DC leakage current is normal because its insulation resistance is finite. A current that remains above the part’s specified limit, however, can indicate a crack, contamination, or another insulation defect. The first step is to distinguish that steady current from the larger charging and dielectric-absorption currents that fade after voltage is applied.

What “leakage” means in an MLCC

An MLCC places ceramic dielectric between conductive internal electrodes. The insulation is not perfect: under DC voltage, a small current can pass through it. Insulation resistance expresses this relationship as applied DC voltage divided by leakage current, measured after a specified settling time.

The current immediately after voltage is applied is not all steady leakage. Murata models the total as I(t) = Ic(t) + Ia(t) + Ir: charging current, absorption current, and leakage current. Charging and absorption components decline with time; the remaining steady component is the leakage current. Absorption can involve low-frequency dielectric loss, reverse polarization in high-permittivity ferroelectric capacitors, and a Schottky barrier at the ceramic-metal interface. See Murata’s explanation of insulation resistance and leakage current.

That distinction matters in diagnosis. A reading taken too soon may include transient current and look worse than the eventual insulation resistance. Compare measurements only when the voltage, elapsed time, temperature, and ripple conditions are defined. The exact test method belongs to the specification for the particular part.

“Leakage” can therefore describe two different situations: the small steady current expected from a real capacitor, or a higher-than-acceptable current associated with degraded insulation. The presence of some current alone does not prove a defect. The useful question is whether the measured insulation resistance meets the limit for the exact part under the specified test conditions.

This explanation is centered on multilayer ceramic chip capacitors. It should not be taken to mean that every ceramic capacitor construction has identical behavior, limits, or failure mechanisms. Even within MLCCs, the part specification and the application conditions matter.

Why insulation resistance can become abnormally low

Cracks that reach active electrodes

Mechanical or thermal stress can crack the ceramic. If a crack intersects the active region containing internal electrodes, it can create a path for leakage and degrade insulation resistance. Murata describes how an air gap at the crack can concentrate the electric field. Local breakdown can cause repeated discharges, progressively worsening insulation resistance; depending on the crack path and conditions, the result may be low resistance, a short circuit, or an open circuit. Murata details this crack-related failure mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This mechanism helps explain why a crack is not merely a cosmetic concern. Once the crack reaches active electrodes, the local electric field can differ from the field in intact ceramic. Repeated discharge in that localized region may make the insulation progressively worse. A part can therefore change from an initially marginal reading to a more serious electrical failure; the cited manufacturer source describes the mechanism, but does not quantify how quickly that progression occurs.

Board bending and twisting

PCB strain is a preventable source of cracks. When a board bends or twists, copper lands move, solder deforms, and tensile stress can concentrate near the ends of the chip’s external electrodes. As Murata puts it, “When the land moves, the solder also moves and deforms.” The sequence is explained in its strain-crack mechanism and prevention guidance.

Stress can arise during depanelization, installation, handling, servicing, or other manufacturing operations that load the board. A crack may also admit moisture or organic material, including solder-flux residues, through a gap. This is a possible way for a crack-related path to deteriorate insulation resistance; it does not mean ordinary ambient humidity alone explains every leakage complaint.

Think about the whole mechanical load path rather than just the capacitor body: board movement transfers through the copper land and solder to the chip termination. A process that flexes a board after components are mounted can therefore matter even if the capacitor was undamaged during placement. Review when and how the assembly is supported, separated, installed, and serviced, especially if the symptom appears after one of those operations.

Other possible insulation defects

If inspection does not reveal a crack, other possible low-insulation-resistance causes include internal contamination, thin or uneven dielectric layers, delamination, and voids. KEMET/YAGEO’s indexed failure-analysis material lists these as possible mechanisms, but the detailed destination is not accessible, so they are best treated as a troubleshooting checklist—not a diagnosis or a ranking of how often failures occur.

These internal possibilities are particularly important when a board-strain history does not explain the symptom. A normal-looking exterior is not enough to identify which internal mechanism, if any, is present. The evidence available here supports considering these mechanisms during failure analysis, but does not provide a test that distinguishes them or a basis for assigning relative likelihood.

How to measure leakage without confusing it with transient current

Murata describes insulation-resistance measurement as applying DC without ripple between the terminals and measuring leakage after a defined time. Its example refers to a delay such as 60 seconds, but the required voltage and delay must come from the exact component specification; 60 seconds is not a universal test setting. The applicable source is the part’s detailed specification, alongside Murata’s measurement explanation.

  1. Identify the exact part. Record the manufacturer and full part number, then obtain its detailed specification. Confirm rated voltage, dielectric, capacitance, package, insulation-resistance limit, and test conditions.
  2. Check the test setup. Verify the connections and use the prescribed test voltage and current-limited setup. At very high resistance, fixture leakage and surface contamination can distort tiny-current readings; KEMET’s indexed FAQ cautions that suitable low-leakage equipment may be needed.
  3. Apply the specified DC and wait. Use the specified voltage without ripple and allow the full prescribed settling interval. Do not treat an early reading, which can include charging and absorption current, as the steady leakage value.
  4. Record the conditions. Note elapsed time, temperature, and environment so the result can be compared meaningfully with the part’s limit and with other measurements.
  5. Compare with the specification. Check the lower insulation-resistance limit under the specified conditions. If the reading is below the limit, recheck the setup and then inspect the part and board for damage or contamination.
  6. Investigate the assembly history. Review board strain, thermal excursions, and process or handling steps that could have damaged the component. If no crack is apparent, consider other possible internal defects rather than assuming a single cause.

This is a practical diagnostic sequence synthesized from manufacturer measurement and failure guidance, not a universal manufacturer-prescribed procedure. Follow the exact component specification and laboratory safety requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a meaningful comparison, keep the test conditions consistent from one reading to the next. A measurement made at a different voltage, after a different wait, or in a different temperature or environment may not be directly comparable with an earlier one. This is why a repeatable record of test conditions is useful: it can help separate a real change in the capacitor from a change in the way it was measured.

Very high insulation resistance means the current being measured is tiny, so the fixture and surrounding surfaces can become part of the measurement problem. Leakage through contaminated surfaces or the test setup can make a good part appear worse. Before concluding that a component has failed, confirm that the method and equipment are suitable for the resistance range and that the test fixture is not adding an unintended current path.

Do not confuse absorption current with recovery voltage

Here, “absorption current” means a current component that declines after DC voltage is applied. Dielectric absorption recovery voltage is a distinct phenomenon. KEMET’s indexed ceramic-capacitor FAQ says dielectric absorption is not normally specified or measured for ceramic capacitors; that statement does not make absorption current and steady leakage interchangeable.

How to reduce leakage risk

Reduce mechanical strain in the PCB and process

Preventing cracks is more effective than trying to compensate for them after a part has failed. Reduce board bending and twisting during fabrication, depanelization, installation, and service. Measure strain at processes known to load the board and establish a limit suited to the board construction and assembly conditions.

Murata reports examples of customer standards: some use 500 μST for products that may affect human life and 1000 μST for general consumer products. These are examples reported in its article, not universal acceptance limits. Board type, thickness, and other factors change the stress transmitted to a component, so a limit must be chosen for the actual design and process.

The practical implication is not to adopt one of those numbers without review. Establish where the board is strained, assess the construction and assembly conditions, and define an appropriate standard based on the product and process. A strain measurement at a step that does not load the board will not answer what happens during a later, more demanding operation.

Review placement, lands, and board construction

Murata’s design guidance recommends considering distance from board edges, screw holes, and connectors; avoiding high-strain corners and bends; reviewing the separation-line type; optimizing land width; and arranging copper patterns to reduce board deformation. In locations expected to experience high strain, resin-containing external electrodes may be an option. These are design choices to evaluate for the specific part and assembly, not guarantees against cracking.

These measures act at different points in the load path. Placement choices can keep a component away from areas expected to bend; land and copper-pattern decisions can affect how board deformation reaches it; and separation-line and handling choices can reduce strain introduced during processing. The right combination depends on the board and assembly. A layout change cannot by itself establish that strain during depanelization or service is acceptable, so review both design and process.

Account for thermal stress

Cracks can follow thermal as well as mechanical stress. Review thermal excursions and assembly-process conditions against the component maker’s guidance. The cited manufacturer material does not establish one thermal profile that is appropriate for every MLCC family or board.

Thermal review is a separate part of the investigation from board-flex review. If the timing of a failure points to an assembly or operating temperature excursion, compare that history with the relevant component guidance rather than assuming that a mechanical intervention will address it. The sources do not supply a universal allowable temperature profile or a comparative estimate of how much any thermal measure lowers failure risk.

Select against the exact specification

Use the detailed specification for the exact part number to confirm its insulation-resistance limit and test conditions along with its rated voltage, dielectric, capacitance, and package. Murata notes that MLCC specifications set a lower insulation-resistance limit rather than sorting parts into a narrow upper-and-lower range; measured values can vary with the use environment. If circuit operation depends on insulation resistance, allow for plausible variation rather than assuming a tightly bounded value. See Murata’s precautions for insulation resistance.

That specification detail affects both selection and diagnosis. A part meeting its stated lower limit is not necessarily guaranteed to have a particular single resistance value within a narrow band. If leakage could affect circuit operation, the design should tolerate relevant variation rather than relying on an assumed “typical” value as a limit. When replacing a part, confirm the exact specification instead of treating capacitance alone as proof of compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace damaged parts and correct the cause

Do not treat a cracked or electrically failed MLCC as repairable. Replace it with a part that matches the original electrical and mechanical requirements, then address the likely source—such as board strain, thermal stress, contamination, or a process issue. A generic capacitor is not necessarily a compatible replacement: confirm the exact specification and package before substituting.

Replacement addresses the immediate failed component, while root-cause correction addresses the conditions that may damage the replacement. If the original failure followed board flex, review the strain-producing step and the component location; if the evidence points to thermal stress or contamination, investigate those conditions instead. The sources do not establish a universal replacement recipe, so compatibility must be checked against the application and the detailed part data.

Which intervention fits the symptom?

What you observe First area to investigate Useful action Key limit
High current shortly after DC is applied that falls with time Transient charging or absorption current Repeat the measurement after the part’s specified settling interval The delay and test voltage are part-specific; an example delay is not a universal setting.
Steady reading below the specified insulation-resistance limit Test setup, part condition, and environment Verify the setup and conditions, then inspect for damage or contamination Compare only under the exact part’s specified conditions.
Low resistance after board handling, flexing, or assembly Mechanical strain and possible crack damage Inspect the board and component; review strain-inducing steps and layout Murata’s strain examples are not universal limits, and prevention depends on construction.
Low resistance with no visible crack Possible internal defect or an inconclusive inspection Check the test setup and consider contamination, uneven dielectric, delamination, or voids Those additional mechanisms are possible causes, not a frequency ranking or confirmed diagnosis.
Leakage-sensitive circuit design Part specification and operating environment Choose the exact MLCC using its detailed specification and account for variation Specifications establish a lower limit; they do not promise a narrow range of measured values.

Manufacturer sources do not quantify how frequently each cause occurs or compare how much each mitigation reduces failures. The table is therefore a way to choose the next investigation, not a ranking of causes or a promise of efficacy.

In practice, first decide whether the symptom is time-dependent or remains after the settling interval. If it falls, check whether the later value meets the relevant specification. If it remains out of limit, verify the fixture and test environment before moving to component inspection and assembly history. A board-flex association points toward strain review, while an absence of an obvious crack leaves both internal defects and measurement uncertainty on the table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The interventions also differ in where they apply: measurement controls address a misleading reading; part selection addresses specification and circuit sensitivity; layout and process measures address strain; thermal review addresses temperature-related stress; and replacement addresses a failed component. None of these is a universal substitute for the others. Choose the next step based on the symptom and the evidence, while respecting the part-specific limits and implementation constraints such as package, capacitance, dielectric, voltage, board flex, and temperature.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The detailed Murata guidance supports the distinction between normal finite insulation resistance, time-dependent current, and crack-related degradation, as well as practical strain-prevention measures. Its strain article was published August 28, 2012, and last revised July 27, 2022. No population statistic in the cited manufacturer material establishes what share of leakage failures comes from cracks or any other cause, so a cause should be diagnosed from the part, measurement conditions, and assembly history rather than inferred from a general frequency claim.

The additional manufacturing mechanisms and equipment caution come from indexed KEMET/YAGEO FAQ and failure-analysis excerpts whose destination pages currently redirect and could not be inspected in full. They support considering those possibilities, but not treating them as confirmed causes for a particular component.

Likewise, the strain values of 500 μST and 1000 μST are examples of standards used by some customers, as reported by Murata. They do not supply an across-the-board pass/fail threshold. Murata notes that board type and thickness affect the stress experienced by a component and that customers set standards based on their own judgment and experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The evidence reviewed also does not quantify comparative efficacy: it does not say how much a particular layout change, external-electrode option, or process control reduces leakage failures. Treat such measures as manufacturer-informed design and process options to evaluate in the actual assembly, not as guaranteed outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is any leakage current normal in an MLCC?

Yes. A real MLCC has finite insulation resistance, so a small steady current flows under DC bias. The concern is a reading below the exact part’s specified insulation-resistance limit under its test conditions, not simply the presence of current.

Why is leakage higher just after voltage is applied?

The initial current includes charging and absorption components as well as steady leakage. Charging and absorption current decline over time, so measure after the settling interval specified for the exact part.

Can a crack cause dielectric leakage in a chip capacitor?

It can if the crack reaches the active region containing internal electrodes. Murata describes electric-field concentration and repeated local discharge in the cracked region as mechanisms that can degrade insulation resistance. Depending on crack path and conditions, failure may also become a short or open circuit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does humidity alone cause MLCC leakage?

The cited guidance describes moisture or organic material entering through a crack gap and worsening insulation resistance. It does not establish that ordinary ambient humidity alone explains every leakage complaint.

Is 60 seconds the correct insulation-resistance test time?

Not universally. Murata gives a delay such as 60 seconds as an example, but the exact voltage, settling time, temperature, and other conditions must come from the detailed specification for the particular MLCC.

What should I check if an MLCC measures below its insulation-resistance limit?

First verify the exact part and test setup, including the specified DC voltage, settling time, and suitable low-leakage equipment. Then record the conditions, compare against the part’s limit, and inspect for damage or contamination while reviewing board-strain and thermal history.

Can I repair a cracked chip capacitor?

The guidance supports treating a cracked or electrically failed MLCC as a replacement and root-cause issue, not a repair. Select a compatible replacement using the exact electrical and mechanical requirements, then address the condition that may have caused the damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are 500 μST and 1000 μST universal PCB strain limits?

No. Murata reports these as examples some customers use for different product categories, and notes that board type, thickness, and other factors affect component stress. They are not universal acceptance limits.

The Bottom Line

Some DC leakage is normal in an MLCC; abnormally low insulation resistance may reflect measurement conditions, a crack-related path, or another defect. Use the exact part specification and settling time, then investigate strain, thermal history, contamination, and test setup before replacing the component and correcting the likely cause.
