For most Switch 2 players, GameChat is the simplest way to talk while playing. It uses the console’s built-in microphone, but now requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a persistent internet connection. If you’re playing a compatible older Nintendo Switch game, the Nintendo Switch App may also support voice chat. A separate phone or computer call is another option, but Nintendo does not document third-party calls as integrated Switch 2 chat.
The right choice depends first on the game: GameChat is the Nintendo-native option for Switch 2, while the mobile app is limited to supported Nintendo Switch software and multiplayer modes. If neither suits your group, an outside call can be used alongside the console, but its audio setup is separate. Here is what each route requires, how to get started, and what to check before inviting friends.

Which voice chat option should you use?
| Option | Works with | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| GameChat | Switch 2 games and Nintendo Switch games played on Switch 2; you can also chat when you are not playing | Switch 2, Nintendo Switch Online, a persistent internet connection, and friends on your Friend List who have approved you | Friends who want a Nintendo-native chat room on the console |
| Nintendo Switch App voice chat | Some compatible Nintendo Switch software, including supported games played on Switch 2; not Switch 2 exclusive games | Nintendo Switch Online, a supported Android or iOS device with internet access, and a linked Nintendo Account; voice chat is for account holders age 13 or older | Players using a compatible older game or a group already chatting through the app |
| Separate phone or computer call | External to Nintendo’s documented Switch chat options | A separate device and calling service; game and chat audio setup depends on the devices and service you choose | Friends who already coordinate outside Nintendo’s services |
Nintendo’s support information does not establish third-party chat integration, compatibility, audio mixing, or a specific setup for Switch 2. Treat an outside call as a separate communication channel, not a console feature. That distinction matters if you expect to hear both the game and your friends through one headset.

For Switch 2 games, consider GameChat or an independent call; the Nintendo Switch App is not the voice-chat route for Switch 2 exclusive games. GameChat is the most self-contained option because it starts from the Switch 2 C Menu and uses the console microphone. The App is tied to specific compatible software and requires a second device. An outside call is not limited by Nintendo’s listed in-game compatibility, but Nintendo’s documentation does not say how to integrate it with console sound. None of these differences means one option is universally best: the game, friends’ devices, membership, and desired use of video or screen sharing all matter.
GameChat: the built-in Switch 2 option
GameChat is the most direct choice for a group of Switch 2 owners. It is started from the console’s C Menu and can be used while playing a Switch 2 game, a Nintendo Switch game on the console, or when you are not playing. Nintendo describes it as a way to chat with friends; participants need to be on your Friend List and have approved you.
That makes GameChat broader than a voice feature attached to one particular game: the session can be used while playing supported console games or outside a game session. It also gives the group a Nintendo-native room rather than requiring everyone to coordinate a separate phone or computer call. The practical prerequisite is that the people you want to talk with are eligible friends on your Friend List and have approved you.
What you need
- A Nintendo Switch 2 console.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s temporary membership-free access ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026; that period has ended.
- A persistent internet connection.
- Friends on your Friend List who have approved you.
You do not need to buy a microphone for voice chat. Nintendo Support says, “Nintendo Switch 2 features a built-in microphone so players can start chatting right away.” The microphone is built into the console, so buying a separate mic is not a requirement for starting a voice-only session.
The membership detail is worth checking before a play session. GameChat had temporary open access without Nintendo Switch Online from June 5, 2025, to March 31, 2026. That offer is over, so current access requires a membership. Nintendo’s cited GameChat guidance does not give a membership price in this context; check Nintendo’s current membership information for plan and price details rather than assuming the earlier temporary access still applies.
Starting a chat and adding video
- Open the C Menu on Switch 2.
- Start GameChat and invite or join with eligible friends.
- Speak using the console’s built-in microphone.
- To use video, connect a compatible USB camera. Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one option; other USB cameras may or may not work. Use the console’s Test USB Camera feature to check a third-party camera.
Voice and video have different hardware needs. The built-in microphone handles voice, while a compatible USB camera is relevant only if you want video. Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is a dedicated camera option, but a third-party USB camera is not guaranteed to work just because it uses USB. If you already own another camera, use Test USB Camera on the console to check it instead of assuming compatibility or buying a separate mic.
A camera is optional and is only relevant if you want video. GameChat supports up to 12 friends in a session. At most four participants can use video or share their screen at a time; the others can participate by audio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThose caps matter when a large group plans a session. Twelve is the maximum number of friends in the GameChat session, not the number who can all use video or share a screen simultaneously. Video and screen sharing are limited to four participants at a time, so plan for some people in a larger group to join by audio. The feature is still useful for an audio-only gathering, and no camera purchase is needed for that.

GameChat’s main limitation
You cannot use a game’s own in-game voice chat at the same time as GameChat. Nintendo Support states, “In-game voice chat cannot be used while in a GameChat session.” If you want to use the game’s voice feature instead, exit GameChat and use that feature.
This is an either-or choice, not a way to layer Nintendo’s system-level room over a game’s own voice channel. If your group prefers a particular game’s built-in voice feature, leave GameChat before using it. Conversely, if you want GameChat, do not expect the in-game chat to remain active alongside it.
Network conditions can also affect the experience. Nintendo warns that delay may occur depending on the network environment and physical distance between participants. Its GameChat guidance does not provide a latency number, so there is no reliable documented figure to promise for a particular connection or distance. If conversation feels delayed, Nintendo’s statement points to network environment and distance as factors, but it does not quantify their effect.

The Nintendo Switch App can provide voice chat for some supported Nintendo Switch games, including some titles played on Switch 2. It does not provide voice chat for Switch 2 exclusive games. Availability is tied to compatible software and supported multiplayer modes, so the app is not a general voice-chat feature for every game on the console.
Think of the app as a title- and mode-dependent option rather than a universal companion chat. Owning or launching a Nintendo Switch game is not, by itself, enough to establish that App voice chat will work. The software must be supported, and you need to enter a multiplayer mode that supports voice chat. If the group is playing a Switch 2 exclusive, this app route does not apply.
Requirements and setup
- A supported Android or iOS device with an internet connection.
- The Nintendo Switch App and a Nintendo Account linked to the console.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- A supported game and a multiplayer mode that supports app voice chat.
- An account holder age 13 or older to use voice chat in the app.
- Install the Nintendo Switch App on a supported smart device and sign in with the Nintendo Account linked to the console.
- Launch compatible software on the console and enter a multiplayer mode that supports voice chat.
- When prompted, start voice chat from the smart device.
- Other app users can join as they enter the online game.
The app cannot start its game voice chat before users enter a compatible in-game mode. If you do not see the prompt or cannot start a session, first check that the specific game and multiplayer mode support app voice chat.
The order is important: install and sign in on the smart device, then enter the relevant multiplayer mode in the game, and start chat from the device when prompted. The app is not a standalone room that can be opened for any Switch 2 activity. Other App users join as they enter the online game, so the group’s progress into the supported multiplayer mode is part of starting the conversation.

These are the stated requirements; the App cannot launch its in-game chat before the group reaches a compatible mode.

Using a headset with the app
You can connect headphones or a headset to the smart device. For a Bluetooth model, Nintendo specifies support for HSP or HFP. This can make it easier to hear the app conversation, but it does not automatically combine chat with console or TV game sound: Nintendo says game audio normally output by the TV or console is not heard through the smart device.
This is the clearest reason a headset purchase may matter for the App route but not for GameChat voice. A wired or wireless headset connected to the phone can be used for the App conversation. If choosing Bluetooth, check that the model supports HSP or HFP. Do not assume that a Bluetooth label alone guarantees the required profile.
Also distinguish hearing the conversation from hearing the game. Nintendo’s guidance says game sound normally coming from the console or TV is not heard through the smart device. A phone-connected headset therefore is not automatically a combined game-and-chat headset setup. If hearing both sources together is important, verify the capabilities of the exact devices and accessories you plan to use; Nintendo’s App guidance does not specify a universal routing method.

Using a separate phone or computer call
A group can make a call on a phone or computer while playing, independently of Nintendo’s chat features. This can be useful when the game is not compatible with the Nintendo Switch App or when friends already use an outside service. It is not the same as integrated Switch 2 voice chat: the Nintendo support material does not confirm that third-party calls connect to the console, mix with game audio, or work with a particular headset or game.
Before settling on this arrangement, verify that each friend can join the same call and decide how everyone will hear the game and conversation. Do not assume that a phone headset will carry console audio just because it works for the call. If you want a single combined audio setup, check the capabilities of the specific devices and accessories involved; Nintendo’s documentation does not establish a universal setup.
This option is best understood as external coordination, not a feature you enable in the Switch 2 settings. A group may already have a preferred phone or computer service, but its availability and suitability depend on the devices and service the friends use. Nintendo’s published support information does not document Discord or another named third-party service as integrated Switch 2 voice chat, and it does not provide a verified setup for mixing such a call with game audio.
For a practical arrangement, decide in advance which device each person will use for the call and where game sound will come from. If one person uses a phone call while game audio plays on the TV, that may leave the two audio sources separate; the supported routing depends on that person’s equipment. Test the arrangement with the actual devices and people before relying on it for a session. This is not a Nintendo-supported compatibility guarantee, and no specific headset can be recommended as a universal solution from Nintendo’s documentation.

Nintendo says GameChat voice and video content is temporarily stored on the participating consoles. If a participant submits a report, the last three minutes of chat can be included in that report. Participants should understand this before using the feature, particularly when sharing video or speaking about sensitive matters.

This does not mean the article can say how long content is stored or describe additional handling details beyond Nintendo’s statement. The relevant points for participants are that content is temporarily stored on participating consoles and that, if someone submits a report, the last three minutes of chat can be included. Keep those limits in mind when deciding whether to join a voice or video session.
Nintendo also warns that delay can occur depending on the network environment and physical distance between participants. Its cited GameChat guidance does not give a quantified latency figure or an audio-quality comparison, so there is no documented number to use when estimating how much delay to expect.
That warning is qualitative: it identifies network environment and physical distance as possible contributors but does not predict an amount of delay for a given household or connection. The available guidance also does not provide an independent comparison of GameChat audio quality against the App or an outside call. Avoid choosing based on a claimed measured advantage when no such comparison is stated in Nintendo’s support material.
Choose based on the game and the group
- Choose GameChat if everyone wants to use Switch 2’s built-in chat and has the required membership and internet connection.
- Check the Nintendo Switch App if you are playing a compatible Nintendo Switch title and want its app-supported voice chat. Confirm the game and mode qualify before relying on it.
- Use a separate call if your group already coordinates outside Nintendo’s services, but plan for game audio separately and verify your own equipment and service.
- Use a camera only for video. The console microphone is enough for GameChat voice; third-party USB camera compatibility is not guaranteed.
For a group deciding together, compare the requirements before game night: whether everyone has Switch 2 and a Nintendo Switch Online membership for GameChat; whether the title and mode support the Nintendo Switch App; or whether everyone can join the same external call. Then consider what kind of session you want. GameChat can host up to 12 friends, but only four can use video or screen sharing at once. The App requires a supported smart device and has an age restriction for voice chat. A separate call means planning audio outside Nintendo’s documented console features.
Accessories should follow the option rather than drive it. You do not need to purchase a microphone to use GameChat voice. A camera is an optional addition for video, and third-party USB camera compatibility should be checked with Test USB Camera. A headset with HSP or HFP support may be relevant if you use Bluetooth headphones with the Nintendo Switch App, but it is not required for GameChat and does not by itself route game audio through the phone.
Nintendo Support’s GameChat Guide and FAQ and Nintendo Switch App Overview and FAQ, reviewed October 13, 2026, describe the requirements and limitations above. The GameChat access dates and session limits are current to that guidance; check Nintendo’s current support pages if requirements change.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I voice chat on Switch 2?
For the built-in option, open the C Menu and start GameChat. You need a Nintendo Switch 2, a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a persistent internet connection, and eligible friends on your Friend List who have approved you. The console has a built-in microphone, so a separate mic is not needed for voice.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online for GameChat?
Yes. Nintendo’s temporary membership-free GameChat access ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026. That period has ended, so a Nintendo Switch Online membership is now required.

Can I use Discord on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s support information does not document Discord as integrated Switch 2 voice chat or provide a verified setup for mixing a Discord call with console game audio. You can consider an external phone or computer call separately, but check the devices and service you choose.
Does the Nintendo Switch App work for Switch 2 games?
It supports voice chat for some compatible Nintendo Switch software, including some older titles played on Switch 2. It does not support voice chat for Switch 2 exclusive games, and the compatible game must be in a multiplayer mode that supports App voice chat.
Can I use my phone headset with Switch chat?
You can connect headphones or a headset to the smart device for Nintendo Switch App voice chat. Bluetooth models need HSP or HFP support. Nintendo says game audio normally output by the console or TV is not heard through the smart device, so the phone headset does not automatically combine game and chat audio.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need to buy a microphone or camera for GameChat?
No separate microphone is needed for voice because Switch 2 has a built-in microphone. A compatible USB camera is only relevant if you want video. Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is an option; other USB cameras may or may not work, so check them with Test USB Camera.
How many people can join GameChat?
Up to 12 friends can join a GameChat session. No more than four participants can use video or share their screen at once; other participants can join by audio.
Can GameChat and a game’s own voice chat run at the same time?
No. Nintendo Support says in-game voice chat cannot be used while in a GameChat session. Exit GameChat to use the game’s own voice feature.
Why can’t I start voice chat in the Nintendo Switch App?
The App can start game voice chat only after users have entered a compatible in-game multiplayer mode. Confirm that the specific software and mode support App voice chat, and check that you are using a supported Android or iOS device, have internet access, and are signed in with the Nintendo Account linked to the console.
Is GameChat video content stored?
Nintendo says GameChat voice and video content is temporarily stored on participating consoles. If a participant submits a report, the last three minutes of chat can be included in that report.
The Bottom Line
For most Switch 2 groups, start with GameChat: it is built into the console, uses the built-in microphone, and works while playing or outside a game, provided you have Nintendo Switch Online and a persistent internet connection. Use the Nintendo Switch App only for supported older Nintendo Switch games and modes; for other situations, an outside phone or computer call is a separate fallback whose audio setup you must verify yourself.
