For Halo 3 on PC, open Options and Career → Settings → Video in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC), set the game resolution to match your display’s selected resolution, save, and restart MCC. Halo Support says correctly configured display settings can reduce issues such as tearing or stuttering. If performance still misses your target, test the Framerate Limit control and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) as separate changes; official guidance does not identify one best setting or promise a particular FPS gain for custom games.

In Windows, check the active display resolution at Settings → System → Display.

Halo Support’s stated goal is reducing display problems, including screen tearing or stuttering—not guaranteeing a higher frame rate. Its guidance does not provide a universal FPS-optimization preset. Read the Halo Support display-settings instructions.

Test the frame limit and FSR only if needed
MCC includes a Framerate Limit control under Video Settings and FidelityFX Super Resolution under Experimental Settings. Those locations are documented in Halo’s July 20, 2023 update notes; check the current client if the interface has changed. The notes do not specify an optimal cap or FSR mode for Halo 3 custom games, nor quantify their FPS effects. See the July 2023 MCC update notes.
Use a repeatable comparison rather than changing several controls at once:

Choose a frame limit that suits your target, then play the same map and a similar situation. Observe whether frame delivery feels steadier and whether display behavior improves or worsens.

If needed, try an FSR option separately and compare image clarity and smoothness under the same conditions.

Keep a change only if it helps on your PC. Custom-game load, hardware, display resolution, and preferred frame behavior all affect the result; available official guidance does not rank settings or supply comparable custom-game benchmarks.
When to try a lower resolution
If your PC cannot sustain the frame behavior you want, a lower rendering resolution can be a diagnostic tradeoff: it may reduce rendering workload, but image detail will be lower. Halo Support’s default advice is to match the game and display resolutions, so treat lowering resolution as an experiment rather than the official recommendation. Change only that setting, compare the same map and situation, and restore the matched resolution if the image loss is not worthwhile.

Avoid a documented dual-monitor resolution issue
Halo’s July 2023 notes document graphical distortion when changing resolution in windowed mode on a dual-monitor PC while one monitor is disabled. The listed workaround is to enable Fullscreen. The notes describe that specific setup; they do not establish that all dual-monitor configurations are affected. Details are in the MCC July 2023 update notes.

Halo Support lists these minimum requirements for Halo 3 in MCC: Windows 10; an Intel Core i7-975 or AMD A12-9800 APU; GeForce GTS 450 or Radeon R7 Graphics; DirectX 11, with Direct3D feature level 11.1; and 55 GB of storage. These are minimum specifications, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate in a custom lobby. The same support page says there are no officially recommended MCC drivers and advises using the recommended Halo Infinite drivers or newer; that is general MCC guidance, not a Halo 3 performance guarantee. Steam describes Halo 3 PC support up to 4K UHD and 60+ FPS, and its minimum-requirement notes state 30 FPS on performance settings at 1920×1080. These are store-published capability and minimum-target statements, not results guaranteed on every PC or in every custom game. The listing does not display a publication date: Halo 3 on Steam.
