To pair Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones, turn them on, open Bluetooth settings on your phone, laptop, or tablet, and choose WH-1000XM5 from the available devices. The first time you turn on the headphones after purchase, they enter pairing mode automatically. Once paired, you normally reconnect from the device’s Bluetooth settings instead of pairing again.
Pair the WH-1000XM5 with any Bluetooth device
- Turn on the headphones. Hold the power button for about two seconds, until the blue indicator flashes. On their first power-on after purchase, the headphones automatically enter pairing mode. See Sony’s instructions for turning on the headset.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the device you want to use. Turn Bluetooth on, then choose the option to add, pair, or register a new device. The menu name and location depend on the device and operating system.
- Select “WH-1000XM5.” Wait for the phone, computer, or tablet to show that it is connected. Choose the listing that matches this model.
- Check the connection. Play audio from the source device. If the device says the headphones are connected but audio comes from another output, select the WH-1000XM5 as the audio output in that device’s sound settings.
Sony describes pairing as registering the headphones with a source device. For device-specific Bluetooth steps, see Sony’s guide to wireless connections.

Where to find Bluetooth settings
The headphones use the same Bluetooth pairing process with a phone, tablet, or computer; the setting you need is on the source device.
Recommended Free Tools
- Android phone or tablet: Open the device’s Bluetooth settings, turn Bluetooth on, and use its add-device or pairing option to find WH-1000XM5.
- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings, go to Bluetooth, and select WH-1000XM5 when it appears.
- Windows laptop: Open Windows Bluetooth or device settings and use the option to add a device. If the connection is established but sound does not play through the headphones, choose them as the sound output.

Exact menu labels can vary by operating-system version. You do not need Sony’s app just to pair the headphones over Bluetooth.

Reconnect after the first pairing
After the headphones and a device have been registered, you generally do not need to repeat the pairing process. Turn on the headphones and let them reconnect, or select WH-1000XM5 in that device’s Bluetooth settings if they do not connect automatically. Sony explains the difference between registering a device and reconnecting to one in its Bluetooth connection guide.
Connect a phone with Sony Sound Connect
Sony’s phone companion app is now called Sony | Sound Connect; some sections of the WH-1000XM5 guide still use its former name, Sony | Headphones Connect. Sony recommends launching the app on Android or iPhone to connect the headphones, but notes that connection through the app can be unstable with some phones. If that happens, follow Sony’s paired Android or iPhone connection instructions and connect through the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Sony lists the current app on its WH-1000XM5 Sound Connect support page.

Use two devices with multipoint
Pairing several devices over time is not the same as connecting to two audio sources at once. The WH-1000XM5 supports a separate multipoint setup for two sources; it is not a three-source simultaneous connection. Sony provides a WH-1000XM5-specific multipoint setup video. For the setup, follow that model-specific guidance and Sony’s current Sound Connect instructions rather than assuming the steps for another headphone model apply. Sony’s general multipoint overview describes the two-source behavior and notes that setup can vary by device type.
