Choose RAM and storage only after you know which models and workloads the workstation must handle. System RAM helps stage data and support the host environment; GPU VRAM or a platform’s unified memory determines whether many models can run efficiently. Storage must accommodate model files, datasets, containers, and projects. Check the exact CPU, motherboard, memory support, and PCIe lane layout before buying.
Start with the model and workload
List the models you expect to run, their parameter sizes, the context lengths you need, and whether you will do inference, fine-tuning, data science, or graphics alongside AI. Those choices affect both memory and storage. NVIDIA’s guidance for local LLMs is to choose the most powerful model that fits comfortably in GPU memory; quantization can reduce a model’s memory footprint, but aggressive quantization may reduce response quality. NVIDIA’s local AI overview frames hardware selection around the operating system, available GPU or unified memory, model size, and workflow.

System RAM, GPU VRAM, and unified memory are related but not interchangeable. More system RAM does not make a model that exceeds GPU memory fit as if it had additional VRAM. Some platforms use unified memory, so compare those systems on their own terms rather than treating their capacity as directly equivalent to a discrete GPU plus host RAM. NVIDIA’s platform comparisons describe different intended model scales and memory configurations; product capabilities can change over time.

| Guidance | What it applies to | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 64 GB minimum; 128 GB for 100B-parameter or fine-tuning workloads | NVIDIA RTX Workstation multi-GPU AI PC example build, accessed 2026 | Example-build recommendations, not a universal desktop requirement. NVIDIA RTX Workstation guide |
| At least 2× total GPU memory in system RAM | NVIDIA-Certified server configurations, accessed 2026 | Server guidance; do not assume it is a mandatory rule for every desktop workstation. NVIDIA Certification Programs configuration guide |
| 16 GB minimum; 32 GB recommended | NVIDIA AI Workbench full local install requirements, accessed 2026 | Software environment requirements, not a promise that a model or training job will fit. AI Workbench Support Matrix |
| 128–256 GB RAM | NVIDIA Omniverse Kit workstation configuration, accessed 2026 | Recommended for that Kit workstation setup; documentation says requirements depend on workload and OS. Omniverse Utilities technical requirements |
For an individual build, estimate host memory from the workload’s data, model handling, and other applications, then confirm the CPU and motherboard can support the desired capacity and DIMM arrangement. NVIDIA describes system RAM as staging data between storage and GPU memory, but adding host RAM alone does not remove a GPU-memory limit.
Size storage for files and workflow
Account for model weights, datasets, containers, active projects, and room for updates or multiple model versions. A single model file is only part of the total: datasets and container images can make the working set substantially larger. Decide how much must remain on fast local storage and what can live on other storage, based on your workflow.

When one large NVMe drive makes sense
NVIDIA’s multi-GPU workstation example recommends one 4 TB-or-larger PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD. This is a recommendation for that example configuration, not a minimum for all AI workstations. The guide also says a single high-capacity drive is preferable to a RAID array for the AI workloads it covers. Read NVIDIA’s multi-GPU workstation guidance.

Separate drives can be useful for organizing datasets, projects, or operating-system files, but first check the motherboard manual: an M.2 slot may share PCIe lanes with a GPU slot. NVIDIA warns that adding drives can reduce GPU link width in its example platform. Do not assume more NVMe drives or RAID will improve model performance; NVIDIA’s cited guidance does not find a meaningful AI-workload benefit from RAID in the configurations it discusses.

Its listed RAM requirements describe installing and running that environment, not sizing an arbitrary AI job.
Check compatibility and PCIe topology before ordering
Memory and drive compatibility is platform-specific. Use the exact workstation, CPU, and motherboard documentation rather than selecting components from capacity or speed alone.

- Confirm memory type, supported total capacity, DIMM layout, and CPU and motherboard limits.
- Check M.2 form factor and supported PCIe generation for each slot.
- Review the board’s lane-sharing notes to see whether an occupied M.2 slot changes GPU slot bandwidth or width.
- Verify physical clearance and cooling requirements for the selected drives and memory modules.
- For a multi-GPU or server configuration, compare the system against guidance written for that class of platform; do not transplant server rules directly to a desktop.
NVIDIA’s certified server guide also recommends at least 1 TB local NVMe and one NVMe drive per CPU socket for its server configurations. Those are server recommendations, not a consumer workstation baseline. See NVIDIA’s certified systems configuration guidance.

- Define the workload. Record the model sizes, context lengths, inference or fine-tuning needs, datasets, and concurrent applications.
- Check model fit first. Compare model needs with GPU VRAM or the unified-memory capacity of the platform, accounting for the quantization and quality trade-offs described in NVIDIA’s local LLM guidance.
- Choose a host-RAM target. Use the most relevant example above as a reference, then size for your specific workload and the board’s supported DIMMs and capacity.
- Estimate usable storage. Include models, datasets, containers, projects, and operating-system or application files; decide whether one large NVMe or multiple drives better suits your organization needs.
- Inspect the board manual. Verify M.2 generation, lane allocation, GPU slot effects, clearances, and all component compatibility before purchase.
What published numbers can—and cannot—tell you
The cited capacity figures are vendor configuration guidance and software requirements, not independent benchmark results. NVIDIA’s recommendations are tied to its own example builds, certified servers, or software; they do not establish a universal price/performance winner or a guaranteed configuration for other GPU vendors and unified-memory systems. Choose based on the exact platform and workload, and recheck current support documentation because product specifications and software requirements can change.
