NovaTerm’s article describes a native PTY backend, with a web-based interface layered on top. Ambaskar says Tauri v2 avoids bundling a separate browser and uses the operating system’s native webview. The article names WKWebView on Mac and WebView2 on Windows. That is the creator’s explanation of the app’s approach, not a complete account of platform behavior; the article does not detail the Linux webview implementation.
What “local AI” means in the described setup
The creator says NovaTerm is designed to integrate with Ollama and LM Studio for running local models. The article describes command predictions and an AI tutor that can inspect PTY output. If the model is running locally and the feature is configured to use that local runtime, inference can happen on the user’s machine. The article does not document the exact setup steps, supported model list, or how each AI feature handles data.

The same article says users can provide an OpenAI API key. That means the local-model path is an option, not a condition that applies to every configuration. Ambaskar claims local inference means “zero network latency, and absolutely zero data leaves your machine,” but the article does not include network inspection, model-specific tests, or an analysis of how optional cloud configuration affects data flows. Treat that broad privacy and latency language as the creator’s claim rather than an independently established guarantee.

How to interpret the size and startup claims
Ambaskar reports a compiled binary under 10MB and a cold start of around 300ms. These figures are creator-reported claims in the DEV Community article; it gives no benchmark conditions, measurement method, or independent verification. The article also does not specify whether the size refers to a particular platform build or clarify what is included in the measurement. They are not enough to establish how the app compares with other terminal workspaces under equivalent conditions.
