It checks a packet’s destination address and uses routing information to decide where to send it next. The familiar home Wi-Fi router combines this routing function with wireless and wired connections; a modem, when separate, connects the home network to internet service from an ISP.
What does a router do?
A router receives and sends data on computer networks, as Cisco puts it in its router definition. Its central job is to move packets between networks and toward the network where their destination can be reached.

To make that decision, a router examines network-layer addressing, including the packet’s destination IP address, and consults routing information. That information helps it select a next direction or next network. The exact process depends on the network’s configuration and scale.
How does a router forward a packet?
Imagine a laptop requesting a webpage hosted outside the home network. The laptop sends the packet to its router. The router checks the destination network information, looks up a suitable route, and forwards the packet to the next network. Other routers along the way make their own forwarding decisions.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
This is more like a mail sorting hub directing an item to the next facility than a guide that knows every stop in advance. The analogy has limits: routers use packet addresses and routing rules, not human-readable street addresses, and one router does not necessarily know the complete end-to-end path.
How is a router different from a modem?
A modem connects the customer’s equipment to internet access provided by an internet service provider (ISP). A router directs traffic between networks and gives devices on a local network a path to share connectivity. These are different jobs, even when the equipment is housed in a single appliance.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
| Equipment or function | Primary role |
|---|---|
| Router | Forwards packets between networks using destination information and routing data. |
| Modem | Connects the customer side to the ISP’s internet service. |
| Wireless gateway | May combine modem, router, Ethernet switching, and Wi-Fi access point functions in one enclosure. |
So the number of boxes in a home does not tell you which functions are present. One device may perform several roles, or separate devices may handle them.

What does “Wi-Fi router” mean?
A Wi-Fi router performs the routing role and also provides wireless access so devices can join the local network over Wi-Fi. Many home units also provide Ethernet ports for wired connections. Not every router is wireless: routing can be provided by wired equipment or software, while Wi-Fi is an additional local-network access method.

Wi-Fi and internet service are not the same thing. Wi-Fi connects a device to the local network; the router’s upstream connection and the ISP’s service determine whether that network can reach the internet. A device can therefore show a Wi-Fi connection even when the internet connection is unavailable.
Router, switch, and the limits of the definition
Routers make forwarding decisions between IP networks. A switch commonly connects devices within a local network. Home networking equipment may combine these roles, which is why the names can seem interchangeable in everyday conversation, but the functions are distinct.

“Router computer” can refer to the computer system performing packet forwarding or, casually, to the physical home appliance that contains the router function. It does not mean that every router is a standalone box, or that every router includes Wi-Fi.

Not automatically. The router is one part of the connection, and the experience also depends on the ISP plan, network conditions, device capabilities, wireless placement, and the equipment’s specifications. A router’s job is to direct traffic; the definition alone does not establish that replacing one will increase a particular user’s internet speed.
