“No frames” means a tool found, received, or submitted no video images at the particular stage it checked. It does not, by itself, prove that the whole file is empty or permanently damaged. The exact meaning depends on the application, the stream or time range examined, and the tool’s settings.
What is a video frame?
A frame is a decoded image in a video stream. Media tools can inspect streams, packets, and decoded frames as distinct kinds of information. Finding a video stream in a file does not necessarily mean the tool successfully decoded usable frames from it. The FFmpeg ffprobe documentation describes ways to inspect streams, packets, and frames.
What does “no frames” mean in an error message?
In general, the message describes a result at a particular inspection or processing stage: no frames were found, received, or submitted there. For example, the Windows Media error code NS_E_NO_FRAMES_SUBMITTED_TO_ANALYZER is defined as “No frames have been submitted to the analyzer for analysis.” That definition concerns what reached the analyzer; it does not say that every stream in the file, or the file as a whole, lacks frames. The wording appears in a reproduced Windows Error Codes reference dated March 13, 2008.
Why might a tool report no frames?
The message alone does not identify a single cause. The problem could involve the input, the stream or segment being examined, the way the application processes video, or its configuration. A secondary guide discusses possible causes of ffprobe’s “Stream contains no frames” message, but those possibilities should not be treated as a diagnosis for every similar error.

The tool’s configuration may affect frame detection
In FFmpeg, parser settings can matter. Its libavformat API reference documents a configuration involving disabled parsers and a no-fill setting in which there are “no frames”; it also notes that seeking to frames cannot work when parsing for frame boundaries is disabled. This is a specific FFmpeg behavior, not a universal explanation for other applications.
