For a premium GTA VI setup on PS5 or Xbox Series X, buy a 4K monitor with a genuine 120Hz-or-faster refresh rate, HDMI 2.1, VRR, HDR and a low-latency game mode. That specification matches the consoles’ documented display capabilities. It does not prove that GTA VI itself will render at 4K or 120 frames per second: Rockstar’s published GTA VI information confirms PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions but does not yet state final resolution, frame-rate or monitor requirements.
What is officially known about GTA VI display requirements
There is no published GTA VI-specific monitor requirement to satisfy. Rockstar’s official game and platform pages list PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the final console graphics modes remain unannounced. That means any monitor recommendation is based on the consoles’ capabilities and on sensible future-proofing, not on a confirmed GTA VI performance mode.

Take-Two has announced November 19, 2026 as the launch date. Until Rockstar publishes final technical details, treat claims about a guaranteed GTA VI 4K mode, 120-frame mode, HDR master or specific variable-refresh-rate range as unconfirmed.
What each console can output
| Console | Documented capability | What it means for your monitor |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | HDMI 2.1 support and 4K/120Hz video output | A 4K/120Hz display can use the console’s high-end output when a game and the display support the same mode. |
| Xbox Series X | True 4K gaming specification, up to 120 FPS performance target, HDMI 2.1, HDR, VRR and ALLM | A monitor should expose those functions on its console-connected HDMI input, not only through DisplayPort. |
These are platform-level specifications. They do not promise that every game, including GTA VI, will use native 4K or a 120 FPS option.

Recommended monitor specifications at a glance
| Buying tier | Resolution | Refresh rate | Connectivity and features | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Future-proof | 3840×2160 (4K) | 120Hz or higher | HDMI 2.1 with documented 4K/120Hz, console-compatible VRR, HDR, low-latency game mode | Owners who want the consoles’ full display headroom and play other high-frame-rate games |
| Sensible value | 4K | 60Hz | HDMI capable of 4K/60Hz; HDR preferred; VRR useful but optional | Players prioritising sharpness who do not need 120Hz in other games |
| Budget compromise | 1440p or 1080p | 120Hz or higher if responsiveness matters | Verify the exact console resolution/refresh combination; VRR is preferable | Smaller budgets or desks where 4K is less important |
A 27- to 32-inch screen is a practical desk range, but size is an ergonomic choice rather than a console requirement. Check the monitor’s manual for the precise HDMI timings it accepts; a high PC refresh-rate number does not automatically work from a console at the same resolution.
Resolution: why 4K is the premium target
4K gives the most image-detail headroom
PS5 supports 2160p output, and Xbox Series X is specified for true 4K gaming. A 3840×2160 monitor therefore gives either console room to send its highest advertised output. On a 27- or 32-inch screen, 4K also produces a dense image for small interface text, distant objects and fine geometry.
Do not confuse output resolution with internal rendering. A game can render below 4K and upscale to a 4K signal, or change resolution dynamically to hold a performance target. A 4K monitor remains useful in those cases because it accepts the console’s 4K output and avoids buying a display that must be replaced for another title.

When 1440p or 1080p is reasonable
A 1440p or 1080p display can show the console picture, provided its HDMI input accepts the mode selected in the console. It is a defensible compromise when the screen is smaller, viewing distance is long, or budget matters more than maximum detail. The trade-off is less image-detail headroom and, on some displays, scaling that can look softer than a 4K panel receiving a 4K signal.
Refresh rate and the 120 FPS question
Why 120Hz is worth considering
A 120Hz panel refreshes twice as often as a 60Hz panel and can display a 120Hz console signal when a game offers one. It also gives VRR more room to operate and keeps the monitor suitable for other fast games. Microsoft documents an up-to-120-FPS performance target for Xbox Series X, while Sony documents 4K/120Hz video output for PS5.
Choose 120Hz or faster only when the monitor can accept 4K/120Hz through the HDMI input you will use. Some PC monitors advertise 144Hz or 165Hz but limit their HDMI ports to 4K/60Hz; their faster figure may apply only through DisplayPort, which neither console uses for video.

What 120Hz does not prove about GTA VI
Console and monitor capability is not a GTA VI frame-rate announcement. Rockstar has not published final GTA VI frame-rate modes in the official material currently available. A 120Hz monitor may display a future performance mode, a lower-resolution high-frame-rate mode or a different game’s output; it cannot make a 30- or 60-FPS game run faster.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHDMI 2.1: the connection detail that matters
HDMI 2.1 is principally important when you want 4K at 120Hz. PS5 documentation identifies HDMI 2.1 support and 4K/120Hz output. Xbox Series X documentation identifies one HDMI 2.1 port. The monitor must also provide the required bandwidth and expose 4K/120Hz on that specific input.
| Part of the signal chain | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Console | PS5 or Xbox Series X output setting and supported mode |
| Monitor HDMI input | Explicit 4K/120Hz support; do not rely on a generic “HDMI 2.1” badge alone |
| Cable | Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for a 4K/120Hz connection |
| Monitor firmware and settings | Enhanced HDMI, high-bandwidth or console mode enabled when the manual requires it |
A cable cannot create a capability missing from the console or monitor. Sony recommends the cable supplied with PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed Cable when troubleshooting 4K/120Hz. If the console falls back to 60Hz, test the supplied or certified cable, the monitor’s other HDMI input and the monitor’s HDMI mode setting before buying an adapter.

VRR, HDR and input latency
VRR smooths uneven frame delivery
Variable refresh rate lets the display adjust its refresh timing to the console’s changing frame rate, reducing tearing and making frame-time changes less distracting. PS5 provides VRR controls, and Xbox Series X supports HDMI Variable Refresh Rate and AMD FreeSync. Xbox’s monitor guidance highlights VRR alongside HDR and 4K/120Hz.
Look for a monitor that states its VRR range and console compatibility. A wide PC FreeSync range is not proof that VRR works over the console’s HDMI input. No GTA VI-specific VRR range has been announced, so do not select a model on the assumption that Rockstar will target a particular window.
HDR improves highlights only when the panel can deliver it
Both consoles support HDR. HDR can add brighter highlights and a wider brightness range in a visually focused game, but the word “HDR” on a specification sheet says little about actual performance. Compare measured or manufacturer-stated brightness, contrast, local dimming and panel type where available. A dim display with a basic HDR label may look less convincing than a bright SDR image, and a monitor without useful local dimming may show limited separation between bright and dark areas.

There is no published GTA VI HDR certification or mastering specification yet. Treat HDR as a desirable platform feature rather than a guaranteed game effect.
Low latency keeps controls immediate
Select a monitor with a game mode that disables unnecessary processing and has a documented low input-lag result when possible. Input lag is separate from response-time marketing: a panel can claim a very fast pixel response while adding delay through image processing. Use the game preset that preserves VRR and HDR rather than a cinema mode designed for video.

27 to 32 inches for a desk
At normal desk distance, 27 inches makes 4K text and interface elements very sharp; 32 inches makes the same resolution easier to read and gives a more expansive view. Ensure the stand allows height and tilt adjustment, especially if the monitor will replace a television at close range. A larger panel does not increase the console’s frame rate or resolution.

Panel technology changes contrast, viewing angles, motion behaviour and price, not the console’s output specification. IPS panels commonly offer consistent viewing angles; VA panels can provide deeper native contrast; OLED panels can deliver very strong pixel-level contrast and fast transitions but require care with static elements. Choose based on room lighting, the amount of static HUD time you expect and your tolerance for each panel’s trade-offs. None is an official GTA VI requirement.
Configure the consoles after connecting the monitor
PS5 checks
- Connect the PS5 directly to the monitor’s HDMI 2.1 input with the supplied or Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set Resolution to 2160p when using a 4K display, and leave 120 Hz Output and VRR on Automatic when the monitor supports them.
- Open the monitor’s on-screen menu and enable its enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI mode if required by the manual.
- Run the console’s video-output information screen. Confirm that the expected resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR status are recognised before launching a game.
Xbox Series X checks
- Connect the console to the monitor’s HDMI 2.1 input with an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
- Open Settings > General > TV & display options.
- Choose 4K UHD for Resolution and 120 Hz for Refresh rate when those options are offered by the display.
- Open Video modes and enable Allow 4K, Allow HDR10 and Allow variable refresh rate when compatible with the monitor.
- Use the console’s 4K TV details screen to identify any blocked capability. If 120Hz is unavailable, recheck the HDMI input, cable and monitor mode.
Menu wording can change with console system software and monitor firmware. The important test is the capability report shown by the console, not a badge printed on the monitor box.
Buying pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Buying on refresh rate alone: verify the resolution and refresh combination on HDMI, not only the maximum rate through DisplayPort.
- Assuming every HDMI 2.1 label is equivalent: check the monitor’s timing table, bandwidth and whether 4K/120Hz is supported without chroma compromises that affect text clarity.
- Expecting a cable to upgrade the monitor: the cable is an enabling link; it cannot add VRR, HDR or 120Hz to hardware that lacks those functions.
- Treating “HDR” as a quality grade: investigate brightness, contrast and dimming instead of accepting the label as evidence of strong HDR.
- Assuming a 120Hz panel guarantees 120 FPS: frame rate is determined by the game and console mode. GTA VI’s final modes are still unconfirmed.
- Using an adapter or receiver in the middle: connect the console directly while diagnosing 4K/120Hz, HDR or VRR. Intermediary devices can restrict the signal.
- Ignoring viewing distance: a 32-inch 4K monitor may be easier to use than a very small 4K panel at the same desk distance, while a large screen viewed close can make lower-resolution output more obvious.
An example of the specification pattern
Dell’s AW2725QF product page documents a 27-inch 4K dual-resolution gaming monitor with HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K/120Hz console support, HDR, VRR and console-oriented features. It demonstrates the combination to look for, not a universal best-monitor verdict and not proof of GTA VI performance. Check current availability, firmware and regional specifications before purchasing any model.
Quick Recap
Which specification tier fits your use?
Choose future-proof 4K/120Hz when
- You want one monitor for GTA VI and other games that may offer 120Hz modes.
- You own, or may buy, both current-generation consoles and want the same display to serve either.
- You value VRR, HDR and connection flexibility enough to pay for HDMI 2.1.
Choose 4K/60Hz when
- Your priority is a sharp 4K picture and you do not plan to use 120Hz modes.
- You are comfortable waiting for Rockstar to publish GTA VI’s final graphics options.
- The monitor’s HDMI input reliably accepts 4K/60Hz and offers a usable game mode.
Choose 1440p or 1080p when
- Budget, screen size or viewing distance makes 4K less valuable.
- You prefer a high refresh rate for other games and have confirmed the console’s supported mode.
- You accept lower image-detail headroom in exchange for a lower purchase price.
