Track automated ecommerce email performance from delivery through purchase: sends, delivery and bounces; clicks and store sessions; orders, conversion rate, attributed sales and revenue per recipient; plus unsubscribes and spam complaints. Review the measures by flow and message, and interpret each rate using its denominator and attribution rules. Treat open rate as a limited diagnostic signal, not proof of human attention or a measure of sales success.
A practical scorecard for each email automation
Use a funnel scorecard so you can see where recipients drop out. Keep the underlying counts as well as rates: a rate can change because the audience or send volume changed, even when the count did not.

| Stage | Metrics to record | What the stage helps diagnose |
|---|---|---|
| Volume and delivery | Reach or recipients attempted, sends, delivered, and bounced | Whether the automation is reaching its intended audience and whether addresses or delivery conditions are a concern |
| Engagement and site visits | Clicks, click rate, and attributed store sessions | Whether recipients act on the message and whether clicks lead to tracked visits |
| Business outcomes | Orders, order or placed-order conversion rate, attributed sales, revenue per recipient, and, where useful, average order value | Whether the automation is associated with purchases and how much reported value it generates |
| Negative engagement | Unsubscribe rate and spam complaint rate | Whether targeting, cadence, signup expectations, or content may be generating unwanted messages |

How to interpret each stage
Reach, sends, delivery, and bounces
Keep attempted recipients, sends, delivered messages, and bounces distinct when your platform exposes them. Shopify defines reach for an email automation as the number of email sends. Delivery and bounce rates help you spot changes in inbox access or list quality; look at trends across comparable periods rather than drawing a conclusion from one message.
#1 Best Overall
Clicks and sessions
Click rate connects delivery to a recipient action. Shopify defines it as delivered recipients who clicked a link, but dashboards can differ in whether they count unique clickers or total clicks, so check the metric definition before comparing. Sessions add the next step: they show store visits attributed to an email or automation. Tracking setup and attribution rules affect that count, so clicks and sessions may not match one for one.
Orders and conversion rate
Orders and conversion rate connect recipient volume to purchases. The denominator matters. Klaviyo defines campaign placed-order rate as orders recorded within the channel attribution window divided by unique recipients. Shopify reports attributed orders and automation conversion rate. The labels alone do not establish that two platforms use the same denominator or time window; document both before comparing a rate. See Klaviyo’s campaign analytics definitions and its flow analytics documentation.
Rank #2
Attributed sales, revenue per recipient, and average order value
Attributed sales show the monetary outcome a reporting system assigns to an email. Revenue per recipient can help normalize reported revenue for audience size: Klaviyo calculates it using attributed revenue divided by recipients over the same timeframe. Shopify’s sales figures may include adjustments for discounts and reversals as well as applicable taxes, duties, and shipping, depending on the specific report. Reconcile each platform’s revenue definition before comparing amounts.
Average order value is a useful supporting measure when a flow may change basket size or order mix. It does not replace order conversion or revenue per recipient: a larger average order can coexist with fewer orders or lower total attributed revenue.
Rank #3
Unsubscribes and spam complaints
Track unsubscribe and spam complaint rates alongside sales. Higher negative engagement can point to mismatched expectations, targeting, content, or message frequency and may affect inbox placement. Interpret the pattern in light of the audience, signup source, and cadence. Klaviyo’s deliverability guidance offers vendor-specific thresholds and troubleshooting context at its email deliverability monitoring guide.
Use open rate cautiously
Open tracking relies on a pixel, so it is not a reliable count of people who read a message. Shopify notes that previews and security tools can load the pixel without a human opening the email, while image blocking can prevent an open from being recorded. Apple Mail Privacy Protection can prefetch pixels and inflate reported opens, as described in Klaviyo’s email metrics reference. Use opens as a diagnostic signal only; prioritize clicks, sessions, and business outcomes when judging performance.
Rank #4
Make comparisons that mean something
Compare like with like: the same flow purpose, audience type, period, and measurement rules. Welcome, abandoned-cart, post-purchase, and replenishment automations serve different jobs, so a single universal target for their open, click, or order rates would be misleading. No independently validated universal ecommerce automation target is established here.
- Record the reporting platform, date range, audience, flow purpose, denominator, attribution window, and attribution model.
- Review counts alongside rates; a percentage without its volume can hide a small or changing sample.
- Use stage patterns to locate a likely bottleneck. Strong clicks followed by weak orders suggest a different issue from low delivery or few clicks.
- Do not treat platform-attributed revenue as incremental revenue. Establishing incremental lift requires a holdout or another causal design.
Attribution systems can disagree even when they report on the same store. Shopify’s orders report uses last non-direct click by default, and Shopify distinguishes its store-data conversion tracking from third-party click-based tracking. Shopify explains: “Because third-party analytics platforms track conversions using link clicks and Shopify Messaging uses direct store data, the analytics between both services might not match.” Use UTMs when useful, but note the chosen reporting source and its attribution rules.

How to use benchmarks without turning them into targets
Klaviyo’s guide reports Q3 2023 platform averages of 43.33% campaign open rate and 1.44% campaign click rate, and 55.21% flow open rate and 5.37% flow click rate. These historical vendor aggregates include Apple Mail Privacy Protection opens; they are not current 2026 performance claims or universal targets.
The same Klaviyo guide, accessed in 2026, labels bounce below 1%, unsubscribe below 0.3%, and spam complaint below 0.01% as healthy ranges. Those are Klaviyo-specific guidance, not an industry-wide standard. If publishing or using any benchmark, identify the platform and period and match the cohort and metric definition as closely as possible.
