Transmitting electricity across the Moon is difficult because a network must connect distant power sources and users while coping with long periods of darkness, extreme and location-dependent temperatures, lunar dust, and deployment and transmission effects that still need to be characterized on the surface. Cables and wireless power beaming are both under consideration; neither is a universal answer. The right design depends on power demand, distance, terrain, and environmental conditions.
Why lunar power is hard to distribute
Darkness separates power supply from demand
Solar panels can generate electricity only when they receive sunlight, but light varies with location, terrain, and time. A NASA presentation says high-illumination polar sites can still experience up to three continuous days of darkness, depending on location and elevation. At the equator, it describes a cycle of 14 days of illumination followed by 14 days, or 340 hours, of darkness. NASA’s 2025 Moon-to-Mars power presentation outlines these conditions.

A distribution network could connect a well-lit generation site to equipment in a shadowed or distant area, but transmission cannot create energy when the source is unavailable. Storage or another power source must cover those gaps. Generation, storage, and delivery therefore have to be designed as one system.
Temperatures vary sharply by location
NASA lists equatorial temperatures as high as 302°F at noon and as low as −292°F at night, while permanently shadowed regions can reach −418°F. These are location-specific conditions, not a single temperature range that every part of the Moon experiences. Cables, connectors, electronics, and storage components must operate in their intended locations and tolerate the relevant thermal conditions and cycling. NASA’s Lunar Surface Technology page provides the figures.

Dust complicates electrical connections
NASA identifies lunar dust migrating into and interacting with electrical connections as a design challenge. Connectors have to mate reliably despite dust exposure, and the process of deploying and connecting equipment—robotically or with crew assistance—must be dependable. NASA’s power catalog describes a connector tested in relevant lunar vacuum, thermal, and regolith conditions; that development work does not mean a complete lunar grid is already operating. NASA’s power presentation discusses dust-tolerant connections, and the NASA power technology catalog lists developing hardware.
Long routes bring deployment and loss questions
A cable network needs more than wire: it may require reels, deployment mechanisms, connectors, and conversion equipment. Routes must cross lunar terrain, and the system must deliver useful power at the load despite transmission losses. A cable’s stated design capability is not the same as a demonstrated lunar operating result.
NASA’s catalog describes an Astrobotic high-voltage cable and reel system designed for 10 kV DC and 10 kW cabling over distances up to 4 km. Separately, NASA’s LunaGrid-Lite record describes a planned demonstration of a 1 kW system over 100–500 m, intended to characterize robotic cable deployment in one-sixth gravity and transmission effects involving regolith and lunar surface plasma. The TechPort record was updated July 17, 2026 and described delivery on a commercial lander mission as early as 2026; that is a schedule, not confirmation that the demonstration has happened. See the NASA power technology catalog and NASA TechPort’s LunaGrid-Lite project record.

Electronics and control must work as a system
Power has to be converted to suitable voltages, regulated, monitored, and coordinated between sources and loads. NASA identifies radiation-hardened power electronics, common interfaces, and advanced power management and distribution as needs for long-duration surface operations. That system-level work matters alongside the physical cable or beam: a conductor alone cannot ensure safe, stable delivery. NASA’s power presentation discusses these requirements.

How cables and power beaming compare
NASA is considering wired distribution, including cables and connectors, as well as wireless power beaming. Its guidance is that the suitable approach depends on power level, distance, and environmental factors—not that one method is best in every setting.
| Approach | What it involves | Key tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Wired transmission | Cables, connectors, and conversion equipment provide a physical path between a source and a load. | Can suit sustained connections, but requires route deployment, cable and reel hardware, reliable connections, and management of transmission losses and environmental exposure. |
| Wireless power beaming | A transmitter sends power to a compatible receiver without a physical tether. | Avoids laying a cable along the route, but requires compatible transmitting and receiving equipment; viable distance, delivered power, and environmental performance remain design considerations. |
A NASA-indexed 2021 study presentation analyzed DC transmission lines, radio-frequency beaming, and optical beaming in a scenario with modules 1–15 km from a solar source and power needs of 10–50 kW. Those figures are assumptions for the study scenario, not measurements of a current lunar settlement. The NASA Technical Reports Server record describes the study.

For a real system, the choice depends on required power at the load, distance and route, mass, conversion efficiency, dust and temperature exposure, radiation, shadow, compatibility, deployment and maintenance, and how storage or other sources cover darkness. These factors interact: a short, sustained connection and a long route serving multiple loads may favor different designs.

NASA’s catalog describes several technologies under development, including a 10 kW bidirectional Universal Modular Interface Converter, dust-tolerant connectors, kilometer-scale cable systems, and wireless proximity charging. Their descriptions and readiness levels show active technology development, not a deployed lunar utility or proof of long-term lunar surface performance. NASA’s power technology catalog lists the systems.

LunaGrid-Lite is intended to investigate how cable deployment and transmission behave in lunar conditions. Its planned demonstration details are not results from an operating lunar network. More broadly, claims about which architecture will work best depend on performance under the specific power, distance, terrain, and environmental conditions a mission needs to serve.
