Cyberpunk 2077 is demanding because its heaviest graphics mode, Ray Tracing: Overdrive, uses path tracing, and the developer’s highest published target pairs that workload with 4K output. But there is no single PC requirement that describes every experience: resolution, rendering mode, frame-rate target and features such as frame generation all change the workload. CD PROJEKT RED’s specifications are reference targets from its internal testing, not a promise of identical performance on every PC.
Why Cyberpunk 2077 can be hard on a PC
Overdrive uses path tracing
Ray tracing calculates selected lighting effects, such as reflections and shadows, using simulated light paths. Overdrive goes further: it uses path tracing to unify lighting rather than combining conventional rendering with selected ray-traced effects. CD PROJEKT RED describes the mode as very GPU intensive. It can produce more precise reflections, micro-shadows and lighting in scenes such as dark tunnels or areas with steam. The developer introduced Overdrive as a technology preview in Patch 1.62 and later said it exited preview status with Update 2.1. CD PROJEKT RED’s Patch 1.62 notes explain the feature; the initial recommendation from that release is historical guidance, not the later published target.

Higher resolution means more rendering work
The official non-ray-tracing Ultra and Overdrive targets are both 2160p (4K), while the minimum and recommended non-ray-tracing targets are 1080p. Rendering a higher-resolution image requires the GPU to produce more pixels, so a GPU that suits a 1080p target may not suit 4K at the same settings and frame rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCPU, memory and storage also matter
The game’s published targets specify different processors, amounts of system RAM and storage types. Update 2.0 also added an AMD SMT setting and made Crowd Density adjustable independently of the quick preset. These controls indicate that CPU-related and scene settings can matter, but CD PROJEKT RED’s cited material does not quantify their frame-rate effects. An SSD is now required: the Update 2.0 notes advise against HDDs, and against SD cards on Steam Deck, because lower bandwidth may prevent new content from streaming properly. What the published PC targets actually specify
The following are CD PROJEKT RED’s published configurations from its June 11, 2023 requirements update. The FPS figures are expected results from the developer’s internal testing. The publisher cautions that performance can vary with hardware and software configuration, individual graphics settings and output resolution. Treat these as reference targets, not guaranteed results or current GPU-buying advice. See the June 11, 2023 PC requirements update.

All six configurations list Windows 10 64-bit. The table reflects the publisher’s June 2023 targets; hardware generations and market value change, so these figures do not establish what is the best-value PC to buy now.

How to interpret Overdrive and the performance features
Overdrive is a separate kind of target
The developer’s original Patch 1.62 announcement recommended an RTX 4070 Ti or better for Overdrive, with an RTX 3090 named for 1080p at 30 FPS. Those were launch-era recommendations for a technology preview. CD PROJEKT RED’s later June 2023 requirements table sets the Overdrive target at 4K and 60 FPS with an RTX 4080, 24 GB system RAM and 16 GB VRAM, with DLSS Frame Generation on. Keep the dates and conditions attached to the figures: they describe different guidance, and neither guarantees results on an individual setup.

Upscaling and frame generation are not interchangeable with a native render target
The Overdrive figure’s Frame Generation condition matters when comparing it with a target that does not specify that feature. Later updates added further options: Update 2.0 introduced NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction, which the release notes say requires an RTX card and Path Tracing enabled. Patch 2.13 added AMD FSR 3 with Frame Generation and Intel XeSS 1.3, and allowed DLAA and DLSS Ray Reconstruction together. Patch 2.21 added DLSS 4 support, including Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series and faster single Frame Generation support for RTX 50 and 40 Series. These statements describe the named game updates, not a guarantee about every later game or driver version. Update 2.0 release notes, Patch 2.13 notes and Patch 2.21 notes provide the version-specific details.

How to compare a PC or choose settings
Compare like with like rather than matching a GPU name alone. Start with these four questions:
- What output resolution? Decide whether the target is 1080p or 4K; the published targets span both.
- Which rendering mode? Separate non-ray-tracing presets, Ray Tracing presets and path-traced Overdrive. The Overdrive target is substantially different from the minimum non-ray-tracing target.
- What frame-rate target and rendering aids? Note the expected FPS and whether upscaling or frame generation is part of the stated configuration. The official Overdrive figure specifically enables DLSS Frame Generation.
- Do the rest of the components fit? Check the processor, system RAM, VRAM and storage requirements for the target; a graphics card alone does not define the whole configuration.
For an existing PC, the built-in benchmark can help compare settings on that system. Patch 1.62 says its result screen was improved to show PC specifications, driver version and selected settings. Run it with a consistent configuration when comparing changes; its results describe your own setup, not a universal benchmark.
