Science World’s Girls and STEAM Summit is a recurring career-exploration event for young people aged 12–14. Its 2024 announcement planned a day for 300 participants featuring hands-on workshops, mentorship and a keynote; a later announcement scheduled the ninth annual summit for October 3, 2026. Those figures describe announced plans, not verified attendance.
What is Science World’s Girls and STEAM Summit?
The summit is part of Science World’s Girls and STEAM program, which aims to address barriers and the gender gap in STEAM careers. Science World’s September 25, 2024 announcement described the seventh annual summit, themed “Future Forward!”, as a day for 300 girls aged 12–14. The release also said the program offers online resources, workshops, livestreams and events throughout the year. Science World’s 2024 announcement

The event’s name uses “girls,” but Science World’s 2024 release explicitly said that edition welcomed attendees and mentors who identify as women, girls, trans, genderqueer, non-binary, two-spirit or gender questioning. That inclusion wording is specific to the 2024 release; it should not be assumed to describe every later edition without confirmation.

The announced format combines practical activities and contact with people working in STEAM. Science World described workshops, mentorship and a keynote, with the aim of helping participants explore possible careers. A Science World retrospective on the 2019 event likewise described workshops and opportunities to meet STEAM role models.

The approach connects career ideas to people and activities rather than treating STEAM as a list of school subjects. In 2019–2020, Science World’s annual report recorded 53 Mentoring Café mentors alongside 300 girls empowered by STEAM career possibilities. These are historical figures for that reporting period, not current annual totals. Science World’s 2019–2020 annual report
How many people were expected to attend?
Science World’s 2024 release said 300 participants aged 12–14 were expected. A September 22, 2026 announcement from STEMCELL Technologies also described 300 participants in that age range for the ninth annual summit, scheduled for October 3, 2026. Both are pre-event announcements; neither figure, by itself, confirms final attendance. STEMCELL Technologies’ 2026 announcement

The 2019–2020 annual report separately recorded 60 girls from underserved communities. Science World’s 2019 retrospective said 60 attendees might otherwise not have been able to attend Science World programming. Those figures are historical and should not be read as a current target or as results for the 2024 or 2026 editions.
What is known about the 2026 summit?
The 2026 announcement identified Indigenous visual development modeler and concept sculptor Maritza Louis (Klukʷtús skʷukʷúsnt) as keynote speaker and described a day of mentorship, hands-on workshops and STEAM exploration. It establishes the event plan as announced before October 3, not whether the event took place as planned, how many people attended or what outcomes followed. STEMCELL Technologies’ 2026 announcement

Why the summit matters
Science World presents the program as one way to widen young people’s sense of who can pursue STEAM careers and to confront barriers in those fields. Its 2024 release cited a figure that women accounted for 24% of STEM bachelor-program entries in Canada, attributing it to OECD Education at a Glance 2024. That figure is Science World’s citation of the OECD publication, rather than an independently confirmed statistic here, so it should be treated with that attribution.
The summit’s stated purpose and its activities are evidence of an effort to encourage exploration; they do not, on their own, establish long-term changes in education or careers. The published participation figures above belong to different years and measures, so they cannot be combined into a single trend.
