It usually signals a phone positioned above the brand’s regular flagship, but the specific upgrades vary by company and generation. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 and S26 Ultra show what that can mean in one current lineup: a larger, sharper screen, more camera options, an integrated S Pen and a built-in Privacy Display—along with a bigger, heavier phone.
What “Ultra” means—and what it doesn’t
Phone makers use “Ultra” as a product-positioning label. There is no universal specification that every Ultra phone must meet, so the name alone does not tell you how much better a phone is—or which features it adds. Compare the actual models in the same brand’s lineup and generation.

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 family is a useful example, not a definition for other brands. Samsung presents the S26 Ultra as the top-end model in the family, with hardware and features the standard S26 does not have. The company also describes Galaxy AI as designed to work quietly in the background; that is Samsung’s stated design philosophy, not independent evidence of how well AI performs. How the Galaxy S26 Ultra differs from the standard S26
Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report lists the following screen and weight specifications. The figures describe these two models, not a general difference between all standard and Ultra phones.

A larger, sharper screen
The Ultra’s 6.9-inch QHD+ display gives you more screen area and a higher listed resolution than the S26’s 6.3-inch FHD+ display. That can be useful for reading, watching video, working across apps or viewing detailed content. The trade-off is physical: a larger phone can be less comfortable to carry, hold for long periods or use one-handed.

More camera choices, including longer optical reach
Android Central’s lineup comparison lists a 200 MP main camera, a 50 MP ultrawide, a 3× telephoto and an additional 5× telephoto camera for the S26 Ultra. The extra telephoto option gives you more flexibility when photographing distant subjects than a setup with fewer focal-length options. These are specification details, not results from an independent image-quality test; megapixel counts by themselves do not determine which phone takes better pictures. The S26 Ultra includes an integrated S Pen, which can suit handwriting, sketching or precise on-screen input. Android Central notes that the S Pen in this generation lacks Bluetooth connectivity, so do not assume it supports Bluetooth-dependent remote features. Samsung also says the S26 Ultra introduces a built-in Privacy Display. Which should you choose?
Choose the standard flagship if comfort and everyday use come first
- You want a smaller, lighter phone: in Samsung’s listed specifications, the S26 is 47 g lighter than the S26 Ultra.
- You do not need the Ultra’s additional telephoto camera, S Pen or Privacy Display.
- You would rather pay for features you will use than move to a higher tier for its full specification set.
Choose an Ultra if its specific upgrades solve a real need
- You want the larger, higher-resolution screen for reading, video or working on your phone.
- You frequently photograph distant subjects and would use the extra 5× telephoto option.
- You will make practical use of the integrated stylus or built-in Privacy Display.
Before buying, compare the price for the same storage configuration in your country and account for any trade-in or carrier offer. The available comparison sources do not establish a single current price difference that applies across markets or configurations.

- Camera flexibility: Look for the lenses and zoom ranges you need. Treat megapixel counts as specifications, not proof of better photos.
