For a SHIELD TV system update that has already installed, NVIDIA’s normal consumer settings do not document a way to uninstall or roll back the firmware. A factory reset erases data and settings, but NVIDIA does not say it restores an earlier system version. The right next step depends on whether the change came from the SHIELD system, an app, or an update that failed before installation.
First identify what updated
“Update” can mean three different things on SHIELD TV. The distinction matters because removing an app, retrying a failed download, and replacing system firmware are separate operations.

- SHIELD system update: An NVIDIA firmware or operating-system upgrade. NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV User Guide explains how to check for and install upgrades, but does not document a consumer-facing rollback control.
- App or launcher update: A change to one Android TV app. Any app-level removal option applies to that app, not to SHIELD system firmware.
- Failed update: A download or installation that did not complete. NVIDIA has troubleshooting guidance for retrying a potentially corrupted download; it is not for undoing an update that installed successfully.
If the SHIELD system update already installed
There is no rollback path described in NVIDIA’s standard consumer update instructions. The guide shows manual update checks at Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade; it does not provide an option there to select or reinstall an earlier release. Menu labels can differ by SHIELD generation and software version.

NVIDIA does document a firmware-image procedure for developers returning a device to a stock image: its SHIELD Developer OS Images page says to download and flash the latest consumer recovery image. That instruction is for the developer-image context. It does not establish a universal way for every owner, model, or hotfix state to install any chosen older version. If you are considering image flashing, use the current NVIDIA instructions for your exact device rather than generic or cross-model commands.

If only an app or launcher changed
Check the affected app’s information or settings for an available option to uninstall its updates. Google’s Android TV app help and NVIDIA’s guide cover ordinary app management, but they do not guarantee that an “Uninstall updates” control is available for every preinstalled app or SHIELD software version.
Removing an app update is not a system rollback. If the changed app is built in and no update-removal option appears, do not assume that a factory reset will restore its previous version; NVIDIA describes reset as erasing data and settings, not downgrading software.

If an update failed before it installed
For a failed upgrade that may have a corrupted downloaded image, NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV troubleshooting guidance suggests deleting local update data in LocalNVIDIAAppOTA, rebooting, then retrying the download and installation. This is a retry procedure for a failed update, not a way to remove one already applied. The exact file-manager access and path display can vary with software; follow the current device-specific instructions before deleting files.

NVIDIA’s reset instructions use Settings > Device Preferences > Reset, followed by Erase everything. Reset removes SHIELD data and settings. NVIDIA notes that some Google-account-associated data may be recoverable, but device settings are removed; the instructions do not say the system software returns to an earlier release. Back up anything important and use reset only if you want to erase the device, not to downgrade its firmware.
