Unlike a conventional screen, which forms an image on a physical surface for the eye to view, a VRD uses the scanned light pattern itself to create the perceived image.
How does a virtual retinal display work?
A VRD uses a scanning beam to draw an image as a raster: a pattern of lines that the eye perceives as a picture. The beam’s intensity is varied to represent image content, much as a conventional display varies the color or brightness of pixels on a physical screen. The difference is where the image is formed: on a screen in the conventional case, and through light scanned onto the retina in a VRD. A 1998 technical review explains the retinal-scanning principle.

In a 1998 implementation described by Pryor, Furness, and Viirre, video signals controlled red, green, and blue light sources. Optical components combined and routed the light, while a resonant scanner and galvanometer mirror traced the raster in two dimensions. The authors reported developmental models with VGA and SVGA image quality; those are results for the prototypes described in that paper, not specifications for retinal displays generally. The paper describes the design and its prototypes.
How is it different from a regular screen or other headset?
A standard monitor or television creates an image on a physical display surface. The eye focuses on that surface, and its pixels make up the picture. A VRD instead scans modulated light over the retina, where the pattern is perceived as an image. This defining mechanism distinguishes retinal scanning from head-mounted displays that simply place a conventional screen or other image-forming optics in front of the eyes; not every headset is a VRD.

What are the potential advantages and trade-offs?
The 1998 authors discussed possible gains in resolution, luminance, and field of view compared with earlier head-coupled displays. A technical review also describes high brightness, wide color gamut, and high resolution as potential characteristics. These are proposed or implementation-dependent advantages, not guaranteed features of every device. The original paper and the review provide the technical context.
Alignment is another practical consideration: the viewer’s eye must receive the scanned light. The University of Washington Human Interface Technology Laboratory describes work to expand the exit pupil to make eye alignment easier in a monochrome display. The laboratory says the VRD concept was invented there in 1991; that is the lab’s account of the technology’s history. HITLab’s project page describes its work.

What does the safety evidence establish?
A 1997 safety analysis calculated maximum permissible exposure levels for normal viewing and possible failure modes, then compared those limits with power measured entering the eye. Its abstract reports that the system studied was safe under those analyzed conditions. That finding applies to that system and analysis; it does not establish the safety of every retinal-scanning product, operating condition, or possible failure. Read the study abstract on PubMed.

For a meaningful comparison between devices, look for comparable details on image resolution, field of view, eye-box or alignment tolerance, supported video interfaces and host compatibility, intended use, safety documentation, and current availability. The sources cited here do not provide a current independent head-to-head comparison on those measures, so they are not enough to rank products.
