100,000 People Hit Buy at Once: What a Checkout System Does Next

There is no single outcome when 100,000 people try to buy at once. A checkout might process orders, slow down, queue requests, reject some traffic, time out, or fail in ways that affect other services. The result depends on the system’s capacity, design, and workload; the number of successful purchases and the time to confirmation cannot be calculated without those details.

“At the exact same millisecond” is best understood as a thought experiment about a sharp, synchronized burst. Browsers, networks, and servers will not all observe one perfectly identical instant. What matters is how much work the burst creates, where requests contend for limited resources, and how the system handles overload.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What does a Buy click actually trigger?

A checkout is a chain of components, not one server handling one click. Depending on the implementation, a request may pass through network and edge handling, a load balancer or API layer, application services, payment and inventory logic, a database, and background workers. A slowdown or failure in any constrained component can affect the whole purchase.

The request also creates different kinds of work. Product pages can generate many repeated reads, which caching may reduce. Checkout changes data: the system must validate the request, apply inventory rules, create order state, and interact with payment processing. A store that can serve many catalog reads is not necessarily able to sustain the same rate of order and inventory writes.

AWS’s flash-sale architecture example separates catalog queries from order commands, using services including API Gateway, SQS, Lambda, Aurora, and ElastiCache. That is one provider’s example, not a universal checkout design. AWS’s Database Blog also describes caching and separating read/query work from order and inventory commands as ways to address different workloads.

Can a website handle 100,000 people buying at the same time?

Possibly, but the headline number alone cannot answer that. The outcome depends on the whole request path, the amount of work per purchase, available capacity, service quotas, and which dependencies become constrained. Adding application servers does not automatically remove a bottleneck in a database, payment integration, or another shared resource.

As load approaches a constrained component’s capacity, latency can rise. Requests may then time out, return errors, or be rejected. These are possible overload behaviors, not a measured prediction for a particular store or for exactly 100,000 requests.

Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
  • 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
  • Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)

AWS’s November 9, 2023, article “Top considerations for Flash sale events” recommends planning around traffic volume, inventory, scaling patterns, customer behavior, event duration, and sales channels. Those factors help define a realistic capacity test; they do not establish a universal throughput threshold.

What determines who gets scarce inventory?

A click, an accepted request, a confirmed order, a successful payment, and a fulfilled purchase are different states. They may happen at different times, especially if the system accepts work for later processing. A customer-facing message should distinguish “request received” or “pending” from “order confirmed.” Merely placing a request in a queue does not guarantee a completed purchase.

When orders compete for limited stock, the inventory decision needs to be coordinated safely in the system’s write path. The implementation varies, but it must prevent more successful claims than the available stock allows. “First click wins” is not a reliable promise based on client timestamps: network arrival, server scheduling, and the store’s ordering policy determine what the system can establish.

Why can a timeout still lead to an order?

A timeout tells the customer that a timely response did not arrive; it does not prove that the server did no work. The request may have completed even if the response was lost. Submitting again without safeguards can therefore create a duplicate side effect.

One safeguard is an idempotency key: a unique identifier for one intended purchase attempt. In “Making retries safe with idempotent APIs,” Amazon Builders’ Library author Malcolm Featonby explains that the caller can provide such an identifier, and that recording it and performing the operation’s changes must have atomic properties. With that design, a repeated submission carrying the same identifier can be recognized as the same operation.

The interface should preserve the identifier when safely retrying one purchase attempt and offer a way to check its status. A genuinely new purchase should use a different identifier; identical request details alone do not prove that two submissions express the same intent.

How can retries make a slowdown worse?

Retries can help with transient failures, but each retry adds work. If many customers retry immediately after a timeout or overload, their requests may arrive together and intensify the original burst. AWS Well-Architected guidance on controlling retry calls recommends exponential backoff, randomized jitter, and limits on retry count or elapsed time. Marc Brooker, a senior principal engineer, summarized the role of these controls in the AWS Architecture Blog: “To build resilient systems, we employ three essential tools: timeouts, retries, and backoff.”

Retry only operations that are safe to repeat, use timeouts, and set a bounded retry budget. Throttling or failing fast can shed excess work before queues and dependencies grow without limit. A retry policy should be designed around the operation and the failure being handled, rather than treating every error as a reason to resubmit.

When does a queue help—and what does it change?

A queue can buffer a short spike and let consumers write orders to a database at a controlled rate. That can protect the database from receiving every burst write at once. It shifts work in time; it does not create unlimited processing capacity. If work arrives faster than consumers can complete it, the backlog and wait grow.

Queued processing also changes what the customer can be told. An API may acknowledge receipt before the order has been processed, so confirmation semantics need to be explicit.

Approach Confirmation Effect on a burst Operational trade-offs
Direct synchronous processing The response can report the result of work completed in the request, if the whole path finishes in time. More of the burst reaches the write path immediately. Latency and failures depend on the capacity and availability of downstream components.
Queued processing The initial response may mean only that the request was received; order confirmation can come later. Consumers can process accumulated work at a controlled rate. The system must manage backlog limits, stale or failed work, deduplication, ordering, and recovery.

Queue design includes decisions about length, retention, visibility timeouts, dead-letter handling, deduplication, and ordering. If payment authorization and inventory reservation span services, the workflow also needs recovery behavior for partial failures; a queue does not make the entire distributed checkout one database transaction. AWS’s Database Blog discusses these as design considerations, not as a single required payment workflow.

How should a store prepare for a planned sale?

Preparation starts with the expected high-water workload, not just the number of people expected to visit. Identify hot products and purchase channels, estimate traffic and resource use, inspect service quotas, and test the expected workload across the request path.

During the event, useful signals include:

  • Request rate, latency percentiles, errors, timeouts, and throttles.
  • Database connections and write latency.
  • Queue depth and the age of the oldest message.
  • Inventory conflicts, idempotency-key matches, and payment outcomes.

Set alert thresholds from the system’s own service objectives and test results. Queue depth and end-to-end component monitoring are useful, but a generic threshold cannot say what is safe for every store.
