First check whether it is the browser’s address/search bar or a field on a web page, then compare it across windows, sites, and browsers before changing settings.
First, identify which search box is black
If you mean the browser’s address bar or other browser controls, check the browser’s appearance setting. If the black box is inside a website, the site’s theme or styling may be responsible. Browser and system settings can also affect web-page colors, so the appearance alone does not identify the cause.

Use the scope of the change to narrow it down: note whether it affects one site or many, browser controls or page content, and a regular window or only a private one. A difference between these contexts is a clue, not proof of a particular cause.
Compare the box in a few contexts
- Compare regular and private browsing. If the box is black in an Incognito window, check a regular Chrome window before changing persistent settings. Chrome can appear dark in Incognito mode, according to Google Chrome Help.
- Compare another website. If only one site has a black field, its own styling or a page defect is possible. If the browser controls or fields on several sites look dark, a browser or system setting is more plausible.
- Compare another browser, if available. If the same page looks different in another browser, that narrows the issue toward the original browser or its settings, but does not establish the exact cause.
Check browser appearance settings
Chrome
Chrome’s dark mode can darken its homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other pages; Google does not say that every website or search field will necessarily turn dark. Chrome’s appearance choices include Light, Dark, and Device. Device follows the operating system’s theme. To check, open Customize Chrome, select Appearance, and try Light or Device. Microsoft Edge
In Edge, open Settings > Appearance and check Overall appearance. Microsoft documents a Dark option that changes Edge’s default bright background to a darker color. This setting explains a dark browser interface, but does not by itself prove why a particular page field is black. See Microsoft’s Edge dark-theme guidance.
Check accessibility color settings if the change spans sites or browsers
High-contrast and forced-colors features can change how web content is displayed. Mozilla explains that Firefox high-contrast mode can render website text in one color over a solid background, using a predetermined palette. Microsoft documents Windows contrast themes as an accessibility feature and says forced-colors support is available in Chromium-based browsers and Firefox. These settings are intended to make content easier to see, not to indicate a fault.

- In Windows, check whether a contrast theme is enabled under the system’s accessibility settings.
- In Firefox, check its contrast control if websites have unexpected colors.
- Only test turning an accessibility color feature off if you want the normal palette and can still use the display comfortably; restore it if readability worsens.

If only one website’s search field is black
Try the site’s own theme control, if it has one, or contact its support team with the site name, browser, and browser version. The cited browser and accessibility documentation does not establish a universal reset for a black field on a single website.
