A video game seems intelligent when its AI can interpret a goal, use what it perceives to choose a fitting action, and adjust when the situation changes—not merely repeat a script or chase a score. That is a spectrum of observable capabilities, not a settled test for human-like understanding. To judge a claim about game AI, ask what the system can perceive, what it is trying to achieve, how it acts, and whether it adapts or succeeds in unfamiliar settings.
What does “intelligent” mean in a video game?
There is no universal definition or agreed test for intelligence in games. A practical way to assess it is to look at what an agent does and under what conditions: can it respond to what is happening, follow a goal expressed by a person, change its behavior when that goal changes, or transfer a learned skill to a new environment?

Those abilities are distinct. A character that reacts to a nearby player may be context-sensitive without learning. An agent that follows a new instruction may be flexible without retaining a long history. A system that succeeds in a game it has not encountered during training offers evidence of transfer, but that still does not establish human-level understanding or prove it will perform well in commercial play.

Many AI systems can be framed around a machine-readable objective, such as maximizing a score. A different challenge is open-ended interaction, where the goal may be stated by a person and success is less easily reduced to a number. Google DeepMind’s 2022 interactive-agent project combined several methods: agents first learned by imitating demonstrations, then people judged their progress and mistakes. Those preferences were used to train a reward model, which in turn guided reinforcement learning. The aim was to support activities such as listening, talking, navigating, retrieving, and manipulating objects rather than relying only on a win/loss result or score (Google DeepMind, 2022).

In the project’s virtual “playhouse,” participants chose goals and asked questions in rooms with varied arrangements of objects. DeepMind reported collecting more than 25 years of real-time interactions between agents and hundreds of human participants. That figure describes the combined interaction time accumulated across the project, not one agent training continuously for a quarter-century.
What adaptation can look like
“Adapts” can refer to different behaviors. An agent may react to visual context, respond to a changed instruction, or carry a learned action into an environment it has not seen before. Those are useful distinctions because an AI can manage one without demonstrating the others.
Responding to instructions and what the agent sees
Google DeepMind introduced SIMA (Scalable Instructable Multiworld Agent) as a research agent for 3D virtual environments. It receives screen images and natural-language instructions, then sends keyboard and mouse actions; it does not need access to each game’s source code or bespoke APIs. Its initial evaluation covered 600 basic skills in navigation, object interaction, and menu use. The tasks were designed to take about ten seconds, so the result measures performance on short, defined tasks rather than broad, human-like understanding (Google DeepMind, 2024).

Trying unfamiliar games and learning through play
In its November 2025 announcement, Google DeepMind described SIMA 2 as combining Gemini reasoning with visual interaction. The company says it can follow more complex instructions, converse with a user, explain intended steps, and carry out tasks in games it had not encountered during training. DeepMind also reports that the system improves through trial and error and model-generated feedback during training. These are the company’s descriptions of a research system, not a guarantee about every game or a claim that commercial game characters use the same approach (Google DeepMind, 2025).
Training across many possible worlds
Another route to flexibility is to vary the games and tasks used for training, then test agents on tasks held back from training. DeepMind’s XLand work generated varied games and worlds and adjusted tasks in response to agent performance. For its final-generation agents, the project reports 200 billion training steps across 3.4 million unique tasks, with roughly 700,000 unique games played in 4,000 worlds. These figures describe that particular research setup; they are not a general measure of how much training commercial game AI needs (Google DeepMind, 2021).
Where player choice fits—and where it does not
Player choice can enter the AI loop in several ways: a person may set a goal, ask a question, or provide judgments about whether an agent is making progress. In the playhouse project, people supplied goals and questions, while their judgments helped shape learning. In SIMA 2, DeepMind describes conversation and user instructions. These examples show ways player input can guide an agent; they do not, by themselves, prove that it has meaningful agency, understands a player as a person, or creates a better experience.

That distinction matters when evaluating a game. A branching story may respond to player choices through authored rules, without any learning agent involved. Conversely, a research agent may follow a player’s instruction without changing a commercial game’s story or world. The useful question is not simply whether a game “has AI,” but what the system changes in response to the player and how that response is produced.
How to evaluate a claim about game AI
Use these questions to separate a specific capability from a broad claim that a game is “smart.” They are practical comparison dimensions, not a standardized industry rating system.
- Objective: Is the system maximizing a score, completing a stated task, or responding to human judgments?
- Inputs and controls: Does it receive structured game data or screen images? Does it use fixed actions or ordinary keyboard and mouse controls?
- Adaptation: Does it react to the current state, respond to a changed instruction, or transfer skills to an unfamiliar environment?
- Player role: Does the player set goals or give feedback, or only encounter the AI’s behavior?
- Evaluation: Was performance checked on scripted tasks, through human judgments, on held-out tasks, or in commercial play?
- Limits: How long can it pursue a task? Can it retain context, verify that the goal is complete, and recover when an action fails?
Be especially careful with generalization claims. Success in a familiar training environment is not the same evidence as success on a held-out task or in a game the agent has not encountered. Even then, the test only supports the capability measured under those conditions.

What today’s research agents still struggle with
Google DeepMind says SIMA 2 has difficulty with very long tasks that require extensive multi-step reasoning and checking whether a goal has actually been completed. The company also describes its interaction memory as relatively short: a limited context window helps preserve low-latency interaction but restricts how much history the system can keep available (Google DeepMind, 2025).
These limitations help define the boundary between impressive demonstrations and reliable competence. Completing a brief instruction is not the same as planning over a long play session, tracking every earlier decision, or confirming that an outcome is correct. The SIMA 2 announcement identifies those as challenges; it does not establish a universal performance level for game AI.

That remains an interpretive question, because the cited work does not provide a universal definition of intelligence. It does show research agents being evaluated on instruction-following, interaction, human feedback, and transfer across environments. Those are meaningful capabilities, but they are not proof that an AI thinks or chooses as a human does. Google DeepMind’s SIMA Team called operation across diverse gaming environments “a crucial proving ground for general intelligence”; that is the team’s framing of the research, not an independently established verdict (Google DeepMind, 2025).
