Choose Cloudflare Tunnel when you want a connector from your network to Cloudflare, with private routes for enrolled users or a public web hostname protected by Cloudflare Access. They are not interchangeable in every mode: decide first whether access should be limited to selected devices and identities or available from the public internet.
How the two approaches differ
| Decision | Tailscale | Cloudflare Tunnel and Cloudflare One |
|---|---|---|
| Private access | Tailscale Serve shares a local service with devices on the same tailnet; existing access-control rules apply. Tailscale Serve | A connector links a private network to Cloudflare. Users accessing private routes connect to Cloudflare and enroll in the organization; Gateway network policies can add identity or device-posture controls. Cloudflare private networks |
| Host-side setup | The service host can run Tailscale. A subnet router can extend access to devices that cannot run the client. Tailscale subnet routers | Install cloudflared on a device that can reach the application. It creates an outbound-only connection to Cloudflare. Cloudflare Tunnel |
| Access beyond a private group | Funnel is Tailscale’s option for exposing a local service to the broader internet; its documentation describes it as beta. Use Serve for tailnet-only sharing. Tailscale Funnel | A self-hosted web app can be published on a public hostname with Access policies in front. The documented setup requires an active domain on Cloudflare. Cloudflare self-hosted applications |
| Traffic and reach | Subnet routers can extend access to conventional subnets and devices that cannot run Tailscale directly. Tailscale subnet routers | Private network routes can support HTTP and non-HTTP resources. Private hostname routing has client, connector, and version requirements, so check current compatibility for the components you plan to use. Private network routes Private hostname routing requirements |
The table compares private access with private access, and public exposure with public exposure. A private Cloudflare route is not the same setup as publishing a web app on a public hostname. The important distinction is who can reach the service and what access controls they must pass.

Choose based on who needs access
Use Tailscale Serve for tailnet-only sharing
Serve routes traffic from devices on a tailnet to a local service on a device. HTTPS certificates must be enabled for the tailnet, and the tailnet’s existing access-control rules continue to apply. This suits a personal home lab or a small group whose users and devices can join the same tailnet. Tailscale Serve requirements and behavior

Use Cloudflare private routes for enrolled users and networks
Cloudflare Tunnel runs through cloudflared on a device that can reach the private application. For private network routes, users connect to Cloudflare and enroll in the Zero Trust organization; Cloudflare One Client is the common method described in the documentation. Administrators can optionally apply Gateway policies using user identity and device posture. Cloudflare private network access

Use a subnet router when an endpoint cannot run Tailscale
A subnet router extends tailnet access to a conventional subnet, which can help with legacy devices or systems that cannot run the Tailscale client. Tailscale recommends installing the client directly on a device when feasible; routing through a gateway adds route configuration and another component to operate. The cited Tailscale documentation says subnet routers are available on all plans. Tailscale subnet routers

Decide whether the service should be public
For a service intended only for you and invited users, keep the configuration private: use Serve with tailnet access rules, or Cloudflare private routes with organization enrollment and any network policies you need. Do not treat a tunnel as inherently public or assume that a private route and a public hostname provide the same exposure.

Public web access with Cloudflare Access
Cloudflare’s public-hostname approach makes a self-hosted web application reachable over the internet, with Access policies in front of it. The documented setup requires an active domain in a Cloudflare account. Access supports identity providers, session management, application tokens, and device-posture checks. Its policies are deny-by-default: an Allow policy must match before a user is granted access. Cloudflare Access for self-hosted apps Cloudflare application configuration
This is still a publicly reachable hostname with an authentication and policy layer; it is different from a private network route requiring users to connect and enroll. Choose based on the exposure you actually want, not simply on the fact that both setups use a tunnel.

What the setup implies for your network and hardware
Cloudflare Tunnel uses an outbound connector
Cloudflare’s private web app guide says the outbound tunnel setup does not require inbound firewall ports to be opened or firewall changes for that connection. That claim is specific to this tunnel setup; it does not eliminate application configuration or other network-policy requirements. Cloudflare private web app setup Cloudflare Tunnel connection model
An always-on computer is optional
You do not need to buy a mini PC just to use either approach. A suitable device that already runs the service can also host the connector or Tailscale client. A dedicated always-on host is a convenience if you need the service available while other devices are off, not a platform requirement. Tailscale subnet routers Cloudflare Tunnel
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Only your tailnet devices need access: start with Tailscale Serve and your existing tailnet access rules.
- Some devices cannot run a client: consider a Tailscale subnet router, while accounting for the extra gateway and route configuration.
- Remote users should reach private network resources through Cloudflare: use Cloudflare private routes and plan for Cloudflare connectivity and organization enrollment.
- You want a web app reachable at a public hostname with authentication controls: consider Cloudflare Access, with an active Cloudflare domain and a matching Allow policy.
- You want a local service available to the broader internet through Tailscale: evaluate Funnel and verify its current beta status and plan terms.
What not to assume
- Neither architecture is universally faster, more secure, or cheaper. These product documents describe connectivity and controls, not a like-for-like performance or cost comparison.
- A Cloudflare Tunnel does not automatically mean the application is publicly accessible; private network routes and public hostnames are distinct configurations.
- “No firewall changes” refers to the documented outbound tunnel connection, not every possible firewall, routing, or application requirement.
- Compatibility for Cloudflare private hostname routing is version-sensitive; consult the current requirements for the client and connector you will use.
