A good NHL backup goalie can deliver a reliable start despite long gaps between games, and gives the team credible coverage when its starter needs rest or is unavailable. The job takes more than strong save totals: preparation that carries over to game conditions, steady technique, mental resilience and performance judged in context all matter.
Why the backup role is difficult
Unlike a starter, a backup may go many days between starts and then have to handle NHL speed immediately. That gap can disrupt timing and confidence. Dallas Stars goalie Casey DeSmith told NHL.com that “The confidence issue, and if you have a bad one not getting right back in is the hardest part.” Winnipeg Jets backup Eric Comrie described the challenge as “finding that game rhythm.” These comments reflect their roles when NHL.com published them, not necessarily their current affiliations.

A goalie also has to reset after a difficult outing without knowing exactly when the next opportunity will come. Carter Hutton, then the St. Louis Blues backup, told NHL.com that preparation can help create a sense of rhythm: “Your head controls a lot of that; the way we think and prepare. Do we prepare to succeed or do we prepare to fail?”
Preparation has to resemble game conditions
Team practice can present a misleading picture. A goalie may face many open, uncontested shots, while games require tracking the puck through traffic, reacting to screens and passes, and moving into position under pressure. Practice habits that work against clean shots do not automatically transfer to those situations.

Useful preparation therefore includes realistic movement and reads, competitive drills, traffic, one-timers and less predictable sequences. Video and focused feedback from a goalie coach can help identify what to carry into a start. NHL.com reporting also notes that coaches may favor technically sound, more conservative positioning for a backup because it can be less vulnerable when timing and feel are rusty. That is a coaching perspective, not a universal rule about how every backup should play.
What a backup contributes to the team
A capable second goalie gives a club options: rest for the starter, coverage if the starter cannot play, and a choice of who starts in demanding schedule spots. Teams may use tandems or split some back-to-backs, but the deployment depends on the two goalies’ abilities, rest, opponent, travel, health and schedule.

There is no established ideal number of starts for a backup in the evidence cited here. NHL.com’s historical workload article reported that Stanley Cup-winning goalies averaged 44 regular-season games in its analysis of winners since 2009, and 46 regular-season starts in a comparison going back to Martin Brodeur’s 2003 win. Those are historical averages for cup-winning goalies, not a target for a backup or proof that a particular workload causes playoff success. The article also compared four goalies with at least 70 games in the preceding five regular seasons with 22 in the five full seasons before that; those counts describe its historical periods, not the current league.

A Seattle Kraken article attributed a just-over-11-percent save-percentage reduction for goalies playing both nights to Eric Tulsky’s 2013 analysis, but noted later analyses by Andrew Thomas of SportsMEDIA Technology and Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic found a less pronounced effect. The figure is not settled current consensus, and it does not establish a universal scheduling rule.

How to evaluate a backup goalie
Start with the goalie’s actual workload, then interpret outcomes against the opportunities and conditions involved. Save percentage and goals-against average are useful summaries, but neither fully accounts for shot type, distance, angle, rush chances, pre-shot passes, goalie movement, defensive mistakes or the goalie’s read.
- Establish the sample. Check starts and minutes played before comparing results. Limited opportunities make a short run especially sensitive to a small number of goals.
- Review basic outcomes. Consider shots faced, save percentage and goals-against average, but do not treat any one number as a complete verdict.
- Add context where available. Measures such as goals saved above average per 60 minutes or quality-start percentage can help compare performance, but they still do not replace video or account perfectly for defensive and shot circumstances.
- Look at readiness and team fit. Consider whether the goalie maintains repeatable preparation and positioning after time off, can cover the starts the schedule requires, and provides credible relief for the starter.
A 2025 retrospective study by Ekhtiari and colleagues defines goals saved above average relative to a league-average save percentage on the same shot volume, standardized per 60 minutes in its analysis. It also applies a stated rule to classify quality starts. These are the study’s operational definitions, not universal NHL standards.

For closer evaluation, pair the numbers with video and team context: how difficult were the shots, what happened before them, and did the goalie track and respond well? NHL.com’s discussion of goaltending statistics emphasizes the value of trusting and assessing process rather than relying on box-score figures alone.

What the strongest backups have in common
- They stay mentally ready. A poor start does not dictate the next preparation period, even if the next start is uncertain.
- They prepare with discipline. Practice, video, coach feedback and realistic drills help sustain habits between games.
- They keep their technique dependable. Sound positioning and puck tracking can support performance when game rhythm is hard to maintain.
- They serve the team’s schedule. Their value includes the starts they cover and the recovery time they help create for the starter.
