Peio Canales is an Athletic Club midfielder from Barrika, Biscay, whose game spans the central number 8 and more advanced number 10 roles. After developing through Athletic’s Lezama academy and making his first-team debut in September 2024, he spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Racing Santander, where he made 33 league appearances and scored five goals, according to Athletic’s player record.
What position does Peio Canales play?
Athletic Club lists Canales as a midfielder and describes him as capable of playing as either a number 8 or number 10. Racing Santander called him an offensive midfielder when announcing his loan. These labels point to a central player who can help link play from midfield and take up more advanced positions, rather than to one fixed spot in every formation.

A number 8 generally operates in central midfield, connecting phases of play and contributing in both directions. A number 10 usually works higher, closer to the forwards and in the spaces between an opponent’s midfield and defence. Athletic’s description places Canales across that range; it does not claim that he plays the same role in every match.
How does Canales play?
Athletic’s profile emphasizes his ability to take charge of play and move between number 8 and number 10 duties, rather than offering a detailed technical scouting report. A more specific account comes from AS’s coverage of his Racing season, published on 16 April 2026: when Iñigo Vicente and Andrés Martín moved in from the wings, Canales attacked the space they left. Out of possession, AS described him positioning alongside the midfield in a 4-5-1 shape.

Athletic’s player record lists 33 league appearances and five goals for Racing in 2025/26. In its 16 April 2026 report on his season, AS also cited five goals, along with eight assists. The assist figure is AS’s dated report; Athletic’s season table does not list assists, so the figures should not be treated as a single harmonized statistical record.
