An MMO, or massively multiplayer online game, lets a very large number of players participate and interact in the same online game environment. The term describes the scale and shared online setting—not one particular genre. Many MMOs have persistent worlds that continue to evolve while individual players are away, but persistence is common rather than a rule every MMO must meet.

What does “massively multiplayer online” mean?

“Massively multiplayer online” describes games designed for large-scale online participation, where many players can share and interact within the same game environment. The Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) describes real-time participation by thousands of players worldwide and a virtual world that evolves as players connect. Its terminology entry treats persistence as a common feature, not an absolute requirement. OQLF terminology entry

How is an MMO different from an MMORPG?

MMO is the broader category; MMORPG means massively multiplayer online role-playing game, a role-playing subgenre. As Epic Developer Community puts it: “All MMORPGs are MMOs, but not all MMOs are MMORPGs.” Epic Developer Community glossary

Role-playing is not central to every MMO. The broader category also includes games built around shooting, strategy, or simulation. Corsair’s MMO glossary

Does an MMO need a persistent world or a certain number of players?

Persistence is common, not mandatory

A persistent world keeps evolving while a player is offline, so returning players may find that the game world has changed. This is a common MMO trait, but the OQLF definition does not make it a universal requirement.

There is no universal player-count cutoff

The OQLF entry, last updated in 2011, says a persistent-world game with fewer than 32 players is not considered massively multiplayer in its terminology note. It also gives simultaneous server populations ranging from 100 to 25,000. Those are figures from that dated entry, not a current or globally accepted industry standard. The sources cited here establish no single cutoff that applies to every game.

How can you tell whether an online game is an MMO?

Consider these questions together rather than relying on a single player-count threshold:

  • Shared scale: Can a large number of players interact in the same game environment?
  • Persistence: Does the world continue to exist or change while an individual player is offline?
  • Genre: Is role-playing central, making it an MMORPG, or does the game belong to another genre?

These are useful comparison points, not a universal test that classifies every borderline game.
