Ethereum and altcoins often fall together because they share a common crypto risk factor. When central banks tighten policy, real yields rise, dollar liquidity becomes scarcer, funding costs increase and investors reduce risk, demand falls across many tokens at once. Institutional portfolio rebalancing, leverage, collateral calls and stablecoin liquidity can then amplify the initial move. Ethereum-specific conditions such as network activity, fees, staking or an upgrade may change ETH’s performance relative to other tokens, but broad macroeconomic shocks frequently dominate short-term direction.
A common crypto factor links otherwise unrelated tokens
Crypto markets are not a collection of completely independent assets. Prices of tokens with different use cases, governance systems and development teams are heavily influenced by a shared component: investors’ willingness and ability to hold highly volatile digital assets.

IMF Working Paper 23/163 (2023) identified a single price component, called the crypto factor, that explains 80% of variation in crypto prices. That finding helps explain why Ethereum, large-cap altcoins and thinly traded tokens can decline together even when no common technical defect affects their networks. A macro shock changes the value of the shared exposure first; token-specific news matters afterward, often by changing the size of each asset’s move.

Interest rates and real yields reduce speculative demand
How central-bank tightening reaches crypto
When a central bank raises policy rates or signals that rates will stay high, the discount rate used to value risky future cash flows increases. The present value of expected profits from applications, protocols and token networks becomes less attractive. Higher rates also make comparatively safe instruments such as Treasury bills and money-market funds more competitive with assets that offer no guaranteed cash flow.
The IMF’s analysis finds that US Federal Reserve tightening reduces the crypto factor through the risk-taking channel. In practical terms, investors do not need to decide that Ethereum’s technology has deteriorated. They may simply require a larger prospective return to own ETH or an altcoin, and prices adjust downward until that return is available.
Real yields matter more than the policy rate alone
Real yields are interest rates after accounting for expected inflation. A rise in real yields increases the opportunity cost of holding a volatile, non-yield-guaranteed asset. It can also draw capital toward dollar-denominated fixed-income assets and away from speculative positions. If inflation remains high enough to keep central banks restrictive, crypto can face pressure even before another rate increase occurs because markets revise the expected path of future rates.
Borrowing becomes more expensive throughout the ecosystem
Tighter rates raise financing costs for market makers, trading firms, venture-backed blockchain projects and users of decentralized finance. Leveraged traders pay more to maintain positions; projects may conserve cash rather than buy tokens or fund growth; and decentralized lending rates can rise as liquidity providers demand compensation for risk. These effects reduce marginal buying power across ETH and altcoins at the same time.
Liquidity, the dollar and stablecoins transmit the shock
Why global dollar liquidity is important
Crypto trading is heavily connected to dollar funding, dollar-pegged stablecoins and dollar-based risk appetite. When financial conditions tighten, banks and non-bank lenders become less willing to extend credit, traders reduce leverage and market makers carry smaller inventories. A stronger dollar can make dollar-denominated borrowing and collateral requirements more burdensome for participants outside the United States.

Less available liquidity means that a relatively modest sell order can move prices further. The same reduction in marginal demand affects ETH, major altcoins and smaller tokens because all depend on a pool of buyers willing to absorb supply.
Stablecoin demand can weaken in a tightening cycle
Stablecoins function as settlement assets, trading collateral and a way to remain inside the crypto market without taking direct token price risk. They do not eliminate macro risk. BIS Working Paper 1219 (2024) states: “As monetary policy tightens, crypto prices fall, markets turn bearish, and demand for stablecoins … decreases.” Lower demand can reduce the liquidity available for switching between stablecoins and volatile assets, adding friction during a selloff.
This mechanism is not a claim that every stablecoin loses its peg or that supply always contracts immediately. It means that a broad reduction in crypto participation can shrink the cash-like liquidity supporting token markets. Any specific stablecoin stress event is an additional crypto-plumbing shock, not a necessary condition for a macro-driven decline.
What liquidity stress looks like
- Wider bid-ask spreads and thinner order books.
- Higher funding or borrowing rates for leveraged positions.
- Reduced stablecoin issuance, redemption demand or exchange balances.
- Large price moves caused by orders that would have had a smaller effect in liquid conditions.
Equity-market risk sentiment makes crypto move with stocks
Crypto’s relationship with equities is state-dependent, but it has become more important. IMF analysis published in 2022 found that daily crypto/equity correlation rose from 0.01 during 2017–19 to 0.36 during 2020–21. The figures describe average periods, not a permanent coefficient; correlation can be low in calm markets and rise sharply during stress.
Institutional portfolios create synchronized selling
As institutional participation grows, ETH and other liquid tokens can be treated as high-beta components of a broader risk portfolio. A volatility-targeting fund, multi-asset manager or trading desk may cut positions in several risky markets after an equity drawdown or a volatility spike. The decision can be mechanical rather than based on a new assessment of Ethereum’s code.

Portfolio rebalancing also works in the other direction. If equities fall while crypto positions remain unchanged, a portfolio may become overweight crypto relative to its target allocation, prompting sales. During a crisis, investors often prefer cash and short-duration instruments, so correlated assets are sold together even when their long-term fundamentals differ.

Why correlation rises during crises
IMF Working Paper 23/213 (2023) finds that spillovers increase during turbulence caused by negative economic and financial news, crypto events and other exogenous shocks. Its conclusion that correlation is higher in risk-off episodes is important: diversification based on normal-period correlations can fail when it is needed most. In those episodes, crypto assets can act as conduits for financial-market shocks rather than as independent hedges.
Leverage, collateral and liquidations amplify the first move
Macro news often starts a decline; leverage determines how far it travels. The New York Fed identifies valuation pressure, funding risk, leverage and interconnectedness as vulnerabilities in digital-asset markets.
Collateral feedback loop
ETH, bitcoin and wrapped bitcoin are widely used as collateral in digital finance. Suppose ETH falls after a rates announcement. A borrower whose loan is secured by ETH now has less collateral relative to the debt. The lender may require additional collateral or liquidate the position. The forced sale pushes ETH lower, reducing collateral values for other borrowers and creating another round of liquidations.
Why altcoins are pulled into the cascade
Trading firms and protocols often hold several tokens, use one asset to borrow another and share liquidity pools. A liquidation in ETH can therefore create selling in paired altcoins. Smaller tokens have shallower order books, so forced orders can produce larger percentage declines. Derivatives exchanges add another channel: falling prices can trigger automatic margin closures, which sell into an already weak market.

Interconnectedness means that a token with no direct exposure to the original macro news can still decline because a common lender, collateral asset, market maker or liquidity pool is under pressure.
Inflation and growth expectations shape the risk response
Persistent inflation
An inflation report that is higher or more persistent than expected can push investors to price a longer period of restrictive monetary policy. That reprices discount rates, real yields and funding costs together. The result can be simultaneous pressure on ETH and altcoins even if no policy rate changes on the day of the report.
Growth scares
A sudden deterioration in growth expectations can trigger a risk-off response. Investors may sell equities, reduce credit exposure and demand cash while expecting weaker activity to hurt speculative projects and token applications. If markets believe the slowdown will eventually force rate cuts, crypto can later recover; the immediate reaction can still be negative because the first priority is reducing risk and leverage.
Why inflation and growth can conflict
Markets can face an especially difficult combination when inflation stays high while growth weakens. Central banks have less room to ease, real yields may remain elevated and investors may cut speculative exposure. Crypto prices then reflect both the discount-rate shock and the risk-appetite shock.
Five lenses for diagnosing a synchronized selloff
A useful explanation separates the possible transmission channels instead of attributing every decline to “the Fed.” The same event can activate several channels at once.
Best Value
| Shock type | Primary mechanism | Market evidence to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Discount-rate shock | Higher expected policy rates or real yields reduce the value of distant, speculative cash flows. | Central-bank guidance, policy-rate futures, inflation data and real-yield moves. |
| Liquidity shock | Tighter dollar funding and weaker credit reduce leverage and marginal buying power. | Funding rates, lending conditions, exchange liquidity and stablecoin activity. |
| Risk-appetite shock | Equity losses, volatility and institutional de-risking cause correlated assets to be sold together. | Equity indexes, volatility measures, fund positioning and cross-asset flows. |
| Crypto-plumbing shock | Collateral losses, margin calls and liquidations create forced selling and feedback loops. | Open interest, liquidation activity, collateral ratios, lending utilization and order-book depth. |
| Ethereum-specific factor | Network use, fees, staking, upgrades or application demand changes ETH’s relative performance. | Ethereum activity and protocol developments compared with conditions in the wider market. |
This framework prevents a common analytical error: treating a market-wide fall as proof that one Ethereum fundamental caused every token to decline. It also prevents the opposite error of blaming macroeconomics when a protocol-specific failure is the dominant event.
Ethereum fundamentals can change relative performance, not erase macro exposure
Ethereum has its own drivers. Network activity can affect fee revenue and demand for block space; staking conditions can affect the supply and behavior of ETH; upgrades can alter usage expectations; and application activity can change the perceived value of the network. These factors may cause ETH to outperform or underperform other tokens during the same macro shock.
For example, strong Ethereum-specific demand might cushion ETH while speculative, low-liquidity altcoins fall sharply. Conversely, a technical incident or loss of application activity could make ETH underperform even if rates and equities are stable. The existence of these idiosyncratic factors does not contradict the common-factor evidence. It means total returns combine a broad crypto component with asset-specific components.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why “the Fed controls altcoin prices” is too simple
Federal Reserve policy is a powerful input, not a deterministic price controller. The IMF evidence shows a transmission through risk-taking, but it does not provide a rule that converts a particular rate move into a fixed ETH or altcoin percentage change. Markets respond to expectations: a widely anticipated hike may have little immediate effect, while an unexpected change in guidance can move prices sharply.
Other central banks, the dollar exchange rate, global credit conditions, equity volatility and crypto-specific events can reinforce or offset US policy. A rate cut can even coincide with falling crypto prices if it is interpreted as a response to a severe economic deterioration. The relevant question is not simply whether rates rose or fell, but how the entire path of liquidity, real yields and risk appetite changed relative to what investors had priced.
How to investigate a current ETH-and-altcoin decline
- Start with the calendar. Check recent central-bank decisions, guidance, inflation releases, employment data and major growth indicators. Identify whether markets are repricing the expected path of rates or real yields.
- Check the dollar and funding backdrop. Look for a stronger dollar, tighter credit, rising borrowing costs or thinner market liquidity. These conditions reduce the capital available for speculative positions.
- Compare crypto with equities and other risk assets. A simultaneous equity selloff and rise in volatility points toward a broad risk-appetite channel rather than an Ethereum-only event.
- Inspect leverage and collateral. Large open interest, rapid liquidations, stressed lending ratios or falling order-book depth indicate that forced selling may be amplifying the original move.
- Review stablecoin and market-structure signals. Changes in stablecoin demand, exchange liquidity or redemption behavior can show whether crypto’s internal liquidity is weakening.
- Separate Ethereum-specific news. Check network activity, fees, staking developments, upgrades and application demand. These explain differences between ETH and individual altcoins, not necessarily the shared market direction.
- State the uncertainty. The cited studies explain co-movement and transmission channels; they do not reliably predict the exact size or timing of the next decline. A contemporaneous market call requires current data rather than historical relationships alone.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The 80% common-factor estimate, the increase in crypto/equity correlation and the documented rise in stress-period spillovers establish why synchronized declines are plausible and frequent. They do not say that 80% of every individual token’s next move is caused by macroeconomics, nor do they identify which asset will fall most.
Correlation is also not causation in every observation. A crypto event can damage investor confidence and then affect equities or credit through broader risk channels. Conversely, a financial shock can reach crypto through rates, liquidity and leverage. The direction and strength of transmission depend on market conditions at the time.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: when monetary policy is restrictive, real yields and dollar funding costs rise, investors turn risk-averse and crypto leverage is high, Ethereum and altcoins are more likely to fall together. Ethereum’s network fundamentals still determine relative performance, while the macro environment often determines whether the whole market is moving up or down.
