Closing a long may add selling pressure to that contract and, in some conditions, help extend a decline. It does not mean the token project has failed, and liquidation data alone cannot show what caused a token’s full price move.
What does long liquidation mean in crypto?
A long is a position that gains value if the underlying asset rises. In a futures or perpetual contract, a trader uses margin as collateral to hold that exposure; leverage makes the position larger than the collateral alone would allow. When the asset falls, the position’s unrealized loss reduces the margin supporting it. If the account or position no longer meets the venue’s maintenance-margin requirement, the venue’s liquidation process takes control.

This is a derivatives risk-control action, not a bankruptcy or failure of the token issuer. The process can reduce or close a position, and the precise outcome depends on the exchange’s contract, margin mode, collateral rules, and liquidation procedures. Binance describes liquidation in terms of collateral falling below maintenance margin, while Bybit says its liquidation engine takes over when the mark price reaches the liquidation price (Binance Futures Liquidation Protocols; Bybit order execution and liquidation FAQ).

Why do crypto long positions get liquidated?
Price moves against the position
A falling underlying price creates losses for a long. Those losses leave less margin available to support the position. If the remaining margin falls below the venue’s requirement, the position can be liquidated.

Leverage leaves less room for an adverse move
With more leverage, a given price change has a larger effect relative to the margin posted. But there is no universal liquidation-price formula that applies across exchanges. The threshold can also depend on maintenance-margin tiers, position size, collateral, margin mode, and the venue’s calculation method. A calculator or displayed estimate should not be treated as a guaranteed trigger level.
The venue’s price reference matters
“Price” may mean the spot index, the derivatives contract’s last traded price, or the venue’s mark price. These values can differ. Binance says its futures liquidation price and unrealized profit and loss use mark price; its documentation describes mark price as incorporating funding information and a basket of spot prices. Bybit likewise uses mark price for liquidation on perpetual contracts and describes its calculation as a global spot index combined with a decaying funding-basis rate (Binance; Bybit mark price calculation).
How can long liquidations push token prices lower?
When a centralized exchange liquidates a long, reducing that position generally means sell-side activity in the relevant derivatives contract. If that selling moves the contract price down, other leveraged longs may approach their own liquidation thresholds. Their forced reductions can add further selling pressure, creating a feedback loop.

That mechanism can amplify a decline, but it is conditional. Its force depends on factors such as order-book depth, venue design, collateral arrangements, and whether buyers absorb the orders. A liquidation may follow an earlier shock—such as a move in spot markets or broader risk sentiment—and contribute to what happens next. A cluster of liquidations, by itself, does not establish that liquidations began a crash or account for the entire token-price decline.
Why can a chart price miss a liquidation?
A chart or stop order may be keyed to the contract’s last traded price, while the venue’s liquidation engine uses mark price. If the mark price reaches the liquidation threshold first, liquidation can occur even though the chart’s last price appears not to have touched it. Bybit specifically documents this mismatch; it also explains that the liquidation engine can act when mark price reaches the threshold even if a stop order based on last traded price has not triggered (Bybit order execution and liquidation FAQ).
Displayed levels can also be estimates rather than fixed guarantees. Binance warns that volatile changes in mark price can produce an actual liquidation level different from the initially calculated one (Binance Futures Liquidation Protocols). To understand a specific liquidation, check the venue’s applicable contract rules and identify which price reference the chart, stop, and liquidation process use.

How exchange liquidation rules differ
There is no single liquidation procedure for every exchange or contract. For a platform-specific comparison, check these mechanics in the venue’s current documentation:
- Trigger price: whether liquidation uses mark price, index price, or last traded price.
- Maintenance margin: how requirements change with position size or risk tier.
- Margin mode and collateral: whether the position is isolated or shares collateral through cross or portfolio margin.
- Close-out process: whether the venue reduces a position in stages or closes it, and how it handles orders.
- Loss allocation: what insurance-fund or other loss-allocation mechanisms apply.
Binance and Bybit document their own procedures; their rules should not be assumed to apply to other venues or remain unchanged over time (Binance; Bybit).
Are futures liquidations the same as DeFi lending liquidations?
No. In centralized futures or perpetual trading, an exchange’s liquidation process reduces or closes a leveraged derivatives position. In DeFi lending, a liquidator may repay part of a borrower’s debt and receive collateral; selling that collateral can affect spot markets. The actors, transactions, incentives, and market-impact pathways differ, so findings about lending liquidations should not be presented as direct measurements of centralized futures liquidations.
A March 2025 Bank of Canada staff paper analyzed Ethereum blockchain lending liquidations and reported smaller price drops in its analysis for auction-based mechanisms (Bank of Canada, Staff Working Paper 2025-12). The OECD’s 2022 report discusses research finding lasting price impact when arbitrageurs sell collateral obtained through DeFi loan liquidations (OECD, “Lessons from the crypto winter”). These findings illustrate how liquidation design can affect market impact in DeFi; they do not quantify the effect of centralized futures long liquidations on spot prices.

Liquidation feeds describe activity within the venues and products they cover. A reported notional amount is not automatically the same as realized close-out value or spot-market sell volume. Coverage may vary by venue, contract type, reporting window, and whether a feed captures all forced or voluntary position reductions. For a dated event, those details are essential to interpreting the number.
A 2021 working paper on BitMEX Bitcoin perpetual futures reported daily forced liquidations equal to 3.51% of outstanding futures for long positions and 1.89% for short positions in its study sample (“Liquidation, Leverage and Optimal Margin in Bitcoin Futures Markets”). Those are study-specific historical estimates—not current rates, market-wide benchmarks, or predictions. The available evidence does not establish a representative current statistic for the share of token price moves caused by long liquidations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why was my position liquidated even though the chart price did not reach my liquidation price?
The chart may show last traded price while the venue’s liquidation engine uses mark price. If mark price reaches the threshold first, liquidation can occur before the chart’s displayed price does. Check the venue and contract rules to see which reference each uses.
Do long liquidations cause a crypto crash, or follow one?
They can do either in a sequence: an earlier market move may push longs toward liquidation, and forced selling may then add pressure. Liquidation totals alone do not establish what started a decline or how much of it liquidations caused.
