How to Choose Gym Shoes for Weightlifting, HIIT, and Cardio

For a routine that mixes weightlifting, HIIT, and short cardio sessions, start with cross-training shoes: they offer a practical balance of stability and flexibility. Choose a different type if one activity dominates—especially running for longer periods or lifting as your main priority.

What kind of shoes should you wear to the gym?

Match the shoe to your workout, rather than choosing by appearance or assuming one design suits every activity. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) says a cross-training shoe may be the best choice for people doing many kinds of exercise during the week. adidas also describes cross-training shoes as a balance for varied workouts.

Workout emphasis Shoe direction Main tradeoff
Weightlifting, HIIT, and short cardio in one routine Cross-training shoes Versatile, but not necessarily ideal for sustained running or specialized lifting.
Sustained running or treadmill cardio Running shoes Cushioning and forward-motion design suit running, but the shoe is less specifically tailored to lifting and lateral training.
Lifting is the clear priority Stable training shoes or dedicated weightlifting shoes A firm platform supports stability; less cushioning may be less comfortable for cardio.

These are category-level guidelines, not guarantees about every shoe within a category. The cited guidance does not set numerical thresholds for how much you must lift, how far you can run, or when to replace a pair.

What should you look for when lifting weights?

Prioritize a firm, stable base. adidas advises choosing a flat, stable sole for weight training, while ASICS distinguishes training shoes from running shoes by their benefits. A highly cushioned running shoe may feel less planted for lifting than a shoe designed for training.

AIRHAS Men's Barefoot Shoes Zero Drop Minimalist Sneakers with Anatomical Toe Box (White/Gum,12.0)
  • Zero-Drop & Super thin - The zero drop, and grippy rubber sole, promote proper posture and balance, connect you to the ground.
  • No Tongue -The minimalist sock-like design make them easy on & off. Put your feet in, pull on the loop on the back of the shoes, make it easy to put on shoes.
  • Anatomical Toe Box Optional - Choose from our standard toe box for a familiar athletic fit, or our Anatomical Toe box for maximum toe freedom and comfort.
  • Two Wearing modes - 'Seamless layer' between midsole and insole ensures comfort, use insoles or not for barefoot feeling, it's up to you!
  • Comfortable Wearing - You could wear them without socks. The minimalist shoes are perfect for any occasion, like gym, walking, running, cross-training, deadlifting, or daily wear.

If lifting is the main purpose of your gym sessions—particularly if you want a shoe focused on lifting rather than a compromise—consider dedicated weightlifting shoes. They are not an all-purpose answer: a less cushioned, stable platform may be less comfortable for cardio.

Are running shoes okay to use in the gym?

They can make sense when gym cardio means sustained running or treadmill sessions. adidas describes running shoes as designed to support repetitive forward motion and notes the importance of cushioning for cardio; ASICS also explains differences between running and training shoes.

AIRHAS Men's Barefoot Training Shoes Zero Drop Minimalist Sneakers Anatomical Toe Design for Weightlifting and Fitness (Black, 12.0)
  • Zero Drop Profile: Designed with an even level between the heel and forefoot. This flat base encourages a more natural stance and can help support better balance during your exercises.
  • Anatomical Toe Design: Crafted to follow the natural shape of your foot. This gives your toes room to relax and spread out, which generally provides a more stable base for lifting and training.
  • Durable & Breathable Upper: Made with a lightweight, synthetic woven fabric built to resist tearing while allowing airflow. Fit Note: Because this material is quite sturdy, you might feel some stiffness where the shoe bends at first. It usually requires a brief break-in period to feel more comfortable.
  • Flexible Rubber Outsole: The rubber sole is made to bend smoothly with your foot's movements. It offers reliable grip and aims to give you a close-to-ground feel, similar to being barefoot.
  • Versatile Gym Shoe: Suitable for a wide range of fitness settings. Whether you enjoy weightlifting, cross-training, or daily gym routines, these shoes are designed to offer practical support for most indoor workouts.

The tradeoff is that a running shoe is designed around forward movement, not as specifically for lifting or lateral, varied exercises. If your gym session regularly combines running with weights and HIIT, compare cross-training shoes instead of assuming a running shoe will be the best fit for the whole workout.

What shoes are best for lifting and HIIT?

For a genuine mix of lifting and HIIT, cross-training shoes are a sensible first category to compare. HIIT may combine weights, bodyweight exercises, and varied movement: ASICS says training shoes are suited to weightlifting, HIIT, and bodyweight movements, while adidas positions cross-training shoes for varied workouts. Look for a balance of stability and flexibility, rather than maximizing either cushioning or firmness at the expense of the other.

If the cardio portion is only short intervals, this compromise may suit the overall routine better than a running-focused shoe. If cardio becomes sustained running, reassess the balance: running-specific cushioning and design may matter more.

How should gym shoes fit?

Fit is part of the decision, not a detail to leave until after choosing a shoe category. AAOS advises trying shoes with the same kind of socks you wear for your sport. ASICS recommends a shoe that feels comfortable while fitting firmly around the foot.

When should you replace gym shoes?

AAOS notes that cushioning can become less effective over time, even when a shoe is not being used. It does not give a universal replacement interval, so there is no source-backed number of months or workouts that applies to everyone. Consider the condition and feel of the shoe rather than relying on an unsupported fixed timetable.
