How to Protect Greenhouse Crops During Heating or Cooling System Failure

A practical greenhouse outage plan: map critical loads, test alerts, prepare safe backup heat and power, and respond to heat or cooling failures by zone.

Protecting greenhouse crops during a heating or cooling failure starts before an outage: map the systems each crop zone depends on, arrange backup power and safe emergency heat, and test alarms and response procedures. During an incident, verify conditions at crop level, follow the site plan, and prioritize restoring safe operation. Ventilation and shade can reduce heat stress, but neither guarantees crop-safe temperatures.

Prepare before a system fails

A greenhouse outage can affect more than its heater. Fans, water pumps, inflation equipment, controls and other systems may also depend on electricity. The consequences can include production losses and damage to plant material, according to the University of Florida’s Auxiliary Power Units For Greenhouse Operations. Which loads matter most depends on the greenhouse and crops, so build the plan around your own zones rather than a generic equipment list.

Map dependencies and critical loads

For each crop zone, record the heating, ventilation and cooling, irrigation, inflation and control equipment it depends on. Identify which systems must keep running to protect crops or the structure, and note their power requirements. Have a qualified electrical professional help assess both starting demand and running load, particularly for motors. The generator capacity should cover the actual critical loads and how they operate—not an arbitrary greenhouse size or a broad rule of thumb. UF/IFAS and Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation both recommend planning auxiliary power around essential equipment.

Write a response and escalation plan

Document who checks the greenhouse, who can authorize emergency action, and whom staff should contact for technical help. Include your heating-system technician, generator support, fuel supplier and—if relevant—a source for rental heating equipment. Alberta’s greenhouse energy guidance recommends planning for complete heat failure and keeping rental-equipment contacts available. Identify any installed spare or parallel heating equipment, portable heaters intended for the site, and the procedure for using them safely.

BioGreen Electric Greenhouse Heater & Fan with Digital Thermostat PALMA | 1500 Watts, 5100 BTU/hr | 5800 ft³/h Air Circulation -58 to 210.2°F | Stainless Steel | Spraywater Proof
  • TWO SEPARATELY ADJUSTABLE HEATING ELEMENTS: 750 watts or 1500 watts power. The heater is ideal for rooms up to 120 ft² with an average height of 6.6 feet.
  • PRECISE TEMPERATURE CONTROL: The thermostat automatically starts and stops the heater when the desired temperature is reached. The temperature range is from 32°F to185°F.
  • AIR CIRCULATION MODE: Activating the air circulation mode turns the heater into a fan. The air movement prevents heat buildup around plants.
  • QUICK AND EVEN AIR CIRCULATION: The air circulation heater is very efficient and easily circulates up to 5800 ft³ of air per hour. Since the heater does not run as long, you save electricity and money.
  • SPLASH-PROOF ACCORDING TO IPX4: Thanks to splash protection, the heater can be safely and reliably used in damp rooms. It can also withstand rain and irrigation water without any problems.

Install and test alarms

Use temperature monitoring and power-failure alerts that can reach someone able to respond. UGA Cooperative Extension recommends a warning device for heating malfunction or power failure and notes battery-powered alarms; Alabama Cooperative Extension recommends an emergency call system that monitors outages and indoor temperatures. Check sensor placement so readings represent crop conditions, and test the complete path—including backup power, communications and notification recipients. An alarm is a prompt to investigate, not proof that every zone has the same temperature.

Prepare backup power and safe heat

Test the standby generator with the equipment it is expected to support, and establish fuel availability and replenishment plans. NC State Extension’s winter-storm guidance emphasizes checking equipment and fuel in advance, and identifies heaters and inflation fans as priorities in that situation. Those priorities are specific to the storm context; determine your own critical loads for your facility. Arrange professional installation and transfer equipment as required by local electrical codes.

Any backup heat must be suitable for the greenhouse and must not expose people or crops to harmful fumes. UF/IFAS guidance says fossil-fueled unit heaters should be vented outside. Do not treat an improvised, unvented combustion device as a universally safe emergency heater. Keep appropriate shading materials accessible and make sure trained staff know how to operate vents and other manual controls safely.

What to do when heating fails

  1. Verify conditions. Take an independent temperature reading in representative crop areas, then compare it with the controller or alarm. Check power and fuel status and inspect equipment only if it is safe to do so. A single reading may not describe conditions throughout the greenhouse.
  2. Use the site plan. Restore safe power or activate the planned redundant or rental heat source. Prioritize zones according to crop, growth stage and conditions; the extension guidance does not establish one crop-priority order that applies to every greenhouse.
  3. Avoid unsafe workarounds. Do not improvise combustion or electrical connections. Use only equipment and procedures appropriate to the site, with required venting and professional assistance.
  4. Track the incident. Record the time, temperatures by zone, actions taken and recovery. This creates a usable incident record for staff and technical support.

There is no universal crop-safe temperature or exposure-time threshold established by the cited guidance for all crops and stages. Use crop-specific limits and seek advice from a local horticultural specialist when conditions approach them.

What to do when cooling or ventilation fails

  1. Confirm temperatures and identify the fault. Check representative crop areas and determine whether the problem involves power, fans, pumps, evaporative pads, vents or controls. UF/IFAS maintenance guidance notes that impaired evaporative cooling can reduce efficiency and raise greenhouse temperatures.
  2. Restore ventilation or cooling safely. Follow the greenhouse’s manual or backup procedure. UF/IFAS explains that ventilation can bring indoor temperatures closer to outdoor air temperature; it does not make ventilation a way to cool below outdoor conditions.
  3. Reduce direct solar exposure where suitable. Deploy prepared shade materials if they are compatible with the structure and crop’s light needs. Extension resources discuss shade cloth and related materials as sun-protection measures, but results depend on the material, installation and conditions. Shading is supplemental; it cannot be relied on to prevent injury during extreme heat.
  4. Arrange repair and get crop-specific advice. Contact the responsible technician and communicate conditions to crop or horticultural support. Continue monitoring by zone as the system is restored.

Match the contingency to the greenhouse

The right equipment depends on what it must protect and what can fail alongside it. Use these checks when reviewing a plan or evaluating equipment; they are selection criteria, not endorsements of a particular product.

  • Standby generator: Confirm coverage of critical loads, motor-starting demand, fuel and expected runtime, and whether the arrangement can power the controls, fans, pumps and heating-related equipment you rely on. Get qualified help with sizing, transfer equipment and installation.
  • Temperature and power alarm: Check sensor locations, battery backup, network or cellular availability, who receives alerts and how the system is tested. Choose an alerting arrangement that can reach a person able to act.
  • Backup heat: Check that capacity suits the greenhouse and crop zones, that the fuel is available, and whether the heater depends on electricity. Confirm required external venting and local rental or service support.
  • Shade cloth: Check fit, deployment time, crop light requirements and compatibility with the structure. Plan it as a complement to functioning ventilation, not a replacement for it.
