There is no single maximum number of photons that can be entangled. The practical limit depends on the architecture and on what “size” measures: photons in a sequential cluster, optical modes in a continuous-variable system, graph nodes available for computation, or the distance over which useful entanglement can still be recovered.
In sequential quantum-dot sources, repeated emission errors and matter-qubit dephasing make localizable entanglement fall with photon separation. In larger optical machines, loss, detector efficiency, and the indistinguishability required for interference usually dominate. A system can therefore generate a very large state while making only a small fraction of it usable.

“Size” is not one universal number
Photonic entanglement can be encoded in polarization, time bins, frequency, spatial modes, or continuous quadratures. Those encodings create different meanings of state size, so a photon count from one experiment cannot be compared directly with a mode count from another.
Sequential photon-cluster size
A matter qubit, such as an electron spin in a quantum dot, emits one photon at a time. Between emissions, the matter qubit is rotated so that each new photon joins a growing graph or cluster state. The relevant question is often the localizable-entanglement length: how many photons apart two qubits can be while measurements on the intervening photons still leave useful entanglement between them.

Mode count in continuous-variable systems
Continuous-variable architectures describe resources by optical modes—distinct temporal, spectral, spatial, or frequency channels—rather than by a simple list of individually counted photons. One mode can contain a variable photon number, and a large mode count does not imply that every mode is occupied by a separate, perfectly entangled photon.
Usable graph nodes and fidelity
For a computation or communication protocol, the useful size is the number of nodes that survive preparation, transmission, interference, measurement, and error correction with adequate fidelity. A source may physically emit a long string, yet the protocol may rarely detect a complete string or preserve enough entanglement to use it.
| Metric | What it measures | Why it cannot be treated as a universal photon limit |
|---|---|---|
| Photon separation or decay length | How rapidly recoverable entanglement decreases along a sequential cluster | It is a quality-and-distance measure, not the total number of photons emitted |
| Photon or graph-node count | Discrete particles or logical vertices in a prepared state | Counts do not show whether nodes are detected or have high fidelity |
| Optical-mode count | Number of addressable temporal, spatial, spectral, or frequency modes | Modes may have variable occupancy and different loss or noise levels |
| Fault-tolerant logical size | Logical qubits protected by an error-correcting code | It requires thresholds and overhead, not merely a large physical state |
Why sequential quantum-dot clusters lose stability
How the emission cycle works
In a sequential emitter, the matter qubit is first entangled with a newly emitted photon. A controlled rotation of the matter qubit then prepares it to emit the next photon. Repeating this cycle creates a one-dimensional cluster. Every cycle must preserve the qubit’s coherence, apply the intended rotation, emit into the desired optical mode, and avoid introducing distinguishability between photons.

A slight rotation error, timing fluctuation, spin dephasing event, or spectral shift changes the quantum channel applied to the growing state. Because the same operation is repeated, the effect is not a one-time defect; it progressively reduces the entanglement that can be localized between distant photons.
The measured entanglement length
Cogan, Su, Kenneth and Gershoni reported in Nature Photonics in 2023 that the localizable entanglement in their quantum-dot source decayed approximately exponentially with photon separation. A process-map analysis gave a characteristic decay length of about 8 ± 1 photons at the reported operating condition. This means the recoverable entanglement decreases by a roughly fixed factor as separation grows; it does not mean the ninth photon cannot be emitted or that a cluster stops existing after ten photons.

By tuning the magnetic field, the same study found an optimum characteristic length near ten photons, around 0.09 tesla. That value is an optimized decay scale for that device and protocol, not an absolute ceiling for photonic entanglement or a field-wide average.
Why the magnetic field has an optimum
The field controls the emitter spin’s precession. The useful operation depends on the timing relationship between spin precession and optical radiative emission:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- At stronger fields, the spin precesses faster relative to emission. The resulting operation can depart from the ideal cycle, and field-induced spectral broadening and quantum beats can make successive photons less indistinguishable.
- At weaker fields, the spin takes longer to evolve between pulses. That leaves more time for spin dephasing before the next photon is created.
- At an intermediate field, these effects balance, giving the best measured entanglement robustness for the device.
The operating point also illustrates a rate-versus-quality trade-off. The reported optimum produced roughly 0.5 GHz photon generation and about 80% indistinguishability. Increasing the field can raise the emission rate, but the faster rate is not automatically useful if the photons become harder to interfere or the entanglement channel becomes less accurate.
Photon loss: generation is different from observation
A missing detection does not prove that no photon was emitted
Loss can occur after a photon has been generated. Collection from the emitter, coupling into a fibre, propagation through optical components, transmission through a network, and detector efficiency all contribute. Consequently, a long state may exist inside the apparatus while the experiment records only a shorter or incomplete sequence.
If each photon has an end-to-end detection probability η, observing a consecutive run of N photons scales approximately as η^N when losses are independent. Even a high per-photon efficiency therefore produces an exponentially smaller probability for detecting an entire long string. This is why “how many photons can be entangled?” and “how many photons can be detected and used together?” have different answers.

Loss can remove a graph node or abort a protocol
In a cluster-state computation, a lost photon may remove a node needed for a measurement pattern. Some graph codes can tolerate known erasures by rerouting information or using redundancy, but the allowed loss depends on the code, detector model, and feedforward scheme. In a communication protocol, an undetected photon can prevent a Bell measurement or make the transmitted state unusable even if the source itself operated correctly.

- Source extraction: photons emitted into unwanted directions or modes cannot be recovered without additional optical design.
- Collection and fibre coupling: imperfect spatial mode matching lowers the number entering the transmission path.
- Propagation: fibre attenuation, scattering, and imperfect switching accumulate with distance.
- Interference hardware: beamsplitters, filters, delay lines, and multiplexers each add insertion loss.
- Detection: finite quantum efficiency, dark counts, and timing windows affect whether an event is registered and trusted.
Cogan and coauthors summarized the networking problem by noting that unavoidable photon loss “exponentially limits the success probability of any communication protocol with distance,” while probabilistic interference remains another barrier to a full quantum network.
Indistinguishability is essential for interference
Photons used in a fusion gate or Bell-state measurement must be alike in the degrees of freedom that the optical circuit does not resolve—typically arrival time, spectrum, polarization, and spatial mode. If the photons carry which-path information in an unmeasured degree of freedom, interference visibility falls and the intended entangling operation becomes noisy or probabilistic.
Indistinguishability is related to, but separate from, source brightness. A source can emit rapidly while producing photons with spectral jitter or broadened lines. In the quantum-dot experiment, magnetic-field effects and quantum beats reduced indistinguishability as operating conditions changed. The best useful rate is therefore the rate of high-quality, mutually compatible photons after collection, not the raw emission rate alone.
Solid-state emitters add device-specific constraints
Quantum dots and other solid-state emitters are attractive because they can provide deterministic or near-deterministic emission and can be integrated with photonic cavities. They also contain microscopic variations that differ from device to device. The 2026 review Many-body entanglement in solid-state emitters identifies intrinsic inhomogeneities and decoherence as major challenges for creating complex entangled states.

Architecture-scale demonstrations use a different strategy from a single sequential emitter. They combine many optical sources and processing stages, then connect them with multiplexing, fibre delays or buffers, photon-number-resolving detectors, adaptive measurements, and real-time feedforward.
A 2025 Nature report on a modular photonic quantum computer described a synthesized cross-chip cluster state containing 86.4 billion optical modes. This is an extraordinary mode-scale demonstration, but it is not directly comparable with the ten-photon characteristic length measured in the quantum-dot experiment. The quantities use different encodings and answer different questions: one concerns the number of modes assembled across a modular machine, while the other describes how quickly localized entanglement decays along a sequential source.
The same modular work identifies optical loss as the dominant obstacle to reaching a fault-tolerant threshold. Large mode counts therefore do not by themselves establish a fault-tolerant computer. The system must keep effective loss and noise below the threshold of its error-correcting architecture while supplying enough redundancy and feedforward to complete logical operations.

Improve the emitter and collection path
The quantum-dot study discusses higher-efficiency photonic microcavities and better fibre mode matching. A cavity can redirect more emission into a useful optical mode and modify the radiative environment; improved mode matching can increase the fraction coupled into a fibre. These measures target brightness and system efficiency, but projected gains are not the same as measured performance in the reported experiment.
Best Value
Stabilize the matter qubit
Longer spin-coherence times, reduced charge and magnetic noise, and more accurate control pulses reduce the errors that accumulate during repeated emissions. Magnetic-field tuning must be chosen with both spin coherence and photon indistinguishability in mind, rather than maximizing emission speed alone.
Use multiplexing and buffering
Modular architectures can route successful photons into fibre buffers, synchronize events from multiple sources, and use real-time detection to decide which modes participate in the next operation. Multiplexing improves the chance that a usable event is available at the required time, but every switch, delay, detector, and feedforward step adds engineering complexity and a potential loss channel.
Add error correction and loss tolerance
Fault tolerance requires a code whose threshold matches the actual loss, detector errors, mode mismatch, and gate imperfections. Redundant cluster structures can turn some photon losses into correctable erasures, but redundancy increases the number of physical modes needed per logical qubit. The result is a trade-off between physical scale and logical reliability.

Comparing the main limiting mechanisms
| Architecture | Primary resource | Main stability limits | What a “larger” system requires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sequential solid-state emitter | Photons appended one at a time to a graph state | Spin dephasing, imperfect repeated operations, spectral shifts, and photon distinguishability | More coherent emitters, precise control, efficient cavities, and reliable collection |
| Interferometric fusion network | Photons combined through probabilistic optical gates | Loss, mode mismatch, detector inefficiency, and probabilistic interference | High-efficiency sources and detectors plus multiplexing and feedforward |
| Continuous-variable modular machine | Large numbers of optical modes carrying bosonic states | Propagation and component loss, finite squeezing, detector noise, and synchronization | Mode-scale integration, buffering, adaptive control, and fault-tolerant coding |
What “stable enough” means for a real application
State stability is application-dependent. A laboratory may demonstrate entanglement between nearby photons even when long-range localizable entanglement is weak. A communication link may prioritize heralding and transmission probability, while a computational cluster may tolerate known erasures but require extremely low undetected error rates. Comparing two systems therefore requires reporting at least:
- the encoding and size metric;
- state fidelity or localizable-entanglement measurements;
- photon indistinguishability under the actual interference conditions;
- source determinism and usable generation rate;
- end-to-end collection, transmission, and detection efficiency;
- emitter coherence, inhomogeneity, and sensitivity to operating conditions; and
- whether fault-tolerant error correction was demonstrated or only projected.
The most defensible answer to the title is consequently conditional. Sequential sources currently illustrate a measurable entanglement decay length on the order of several to about ten photons in a particular quantum-dot device, while modular optical architectures can assemble vastly larger mode resources. Neither figure is a universal maximum. The practical boundary is set by the combined error and loss budget: every additional emission, mode, optical component, and measurement must preserve enough indistinguishability and efficiency for the intended protocol to remain above its reliability threshold.
