For the 920CEG puzzle described in the available guides, no particular protection setting is needed to release the clamps. One guide reports that it tested all eight combinations and saw no noticeable change to the next encounter or ending cutscene, but that is not an official guarantee for every version or route.
Where to find the light protection buttons
During the Clamp Release Procedure, look in the PROTECTION section of the clamp-release panel. The three controls are labeled SO, ZE, and RS. Guides associate them with Simon Ordell, Zoe Ellis, and Richard, respectively.

For the 920CEG panel, Townfall Wiki lists SO, ZE, or RS as acceptable settings and says the green Release button flashes when the configuration is correct. AltChar describes the instruction as setting light protection however you like and reproduces the direction to “please use discretion.” Taken together, these guides indicate that you do not need a specific combination to complete this version of the puzzle. Townfall Wiki’s Clamp Release Procedure solution and AltChar’s guide provide the panel context.
What each combination is reported to do
With three independently selectable buttons, there are eight possible settings:

- Experienced entirely in first person, explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged.
- SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length, self-contained psychological horror set against the cold, isolated backdrop of Scotland, 1996

ShowGamer says it tried each option and observed no noticeable difference. That is a guide’s reported test, not an official statement establishing how the setting behaves across every version, route, or later event. Townfall Wiki likewise notes that its page has not independently confirmed the settings in-game. Read the result as evidence that you can choose freely for the immediate clamp-release puzzle—not proof that the buttons can never matter elsewhere. ShowGamer’s report on the light protection buttons describes the test.
Does the choice affect the ending?
The available test found no noticeable change to the ending cutscene between the eight settings. No official developer or publisher statement confirming the buttons’ ending effect is cited by the guides, so the ending claim remains limited to that reported observation.

What not to confuse with these buttons
AltChar warns that some IDs in the preceding Remote Systems puzzle can vary between playthroughs and advises following the player’s own document for those entries. That warning concerns the earlier puzzle’s IDs; it is not evidence that SO, ZE, or RS changes between playthroughs.
