OpenClaw Costs: What Running OpenClaw Actually Costs

OpenClaw has no paid tier, but model API usage and optional hosting or hardware affect the cost of running it. Your total depends on workload and setup.

OpenClaw itself has no paid tier, but running it is not necessarily free. You may pay for AI model usage through a provider API and, if you want the Gateway available on a separate always-on machine, for hosting or hardware. There is no universal monthly total: it depends on your provider, model, token usage and where you run the Gateway.

What you pay for when running OpenClaw

OpenClaw describes itself as self-hosted, MIT-licensed software with no paid tier. Its setup documentation says you need an API key from your chosen model provider. That makes the software subscription, model access and infrastructure separate parts of the budget. See the OpenClaw Docs.

  • OpenClaw software: No paid tier is listed by the project.
  • Model usage: Your provider may charge for API use according to its rates and your workload.
  • Gateway hosting: You can use hardware you already own, buy a dedicated local machine, or pay for a VPS or cloud instance. A separate machine or paid hosting is optional.

How model usage becomes a bill

Model charges depend on the provider’s rate schedule and how much you use the system. Relevant token categories can include input, output, cached input, and cache writes; activity and workload affect how many tokens are billed. A per-million-token rate is a unit price, not a monthly estimate.

OpenClaw’s /usage cost estimation uses configured per-million-token prices for input, output, cache reads, and cache writes. Its cost display may omit a cost if pricing or recorded usage is missing. The token-use documentation describes the categories and estimation behavior.

Provider prices are examples, not a forecast

As an illustration of how rates differ by model, OpenAI’s pricing page, checked on October 7, 2026, listed GPT-6 Luna Standard at $0.05 per 1 million input tokens and $0.25 per 1 million output tokens in its “All models” short-context table. The same table listed GPT-6 Astra Standard at $5.00 per 1 million input tokens and $25.00 per 1 million output tokens. These are OpenAI rate-card figures for the named models and token categories, not an estimate of what an OpenClaw user will spend monthly. Check the current OpenAI API pricing and your selected provider’s rates before budgeting.

Where the Gateway runs—and what that means for cost

The Gateway can run on a personal computer, a dedicated local device, or a Linux server or cloud VPS. OpenClaw’s Linux server guide describes a VPS setup and lists multiple hosting paths, while its installation documentation covers installation options.

Hosting choice Cost shape What to consider
Existing personal computer No new hosting charge is required if you use hardware you already own; electricity and connectivity costs depend on your situation. The Gateway is available while that computer is running and reachable.
Dedicated local hardware Potential upfront hardware purchase; the official docs do not establish a current device price or require a specific Raspberry Pi model. OpenClaw documents Raspberry Pi ARM self-hosting. A dedicated device is optional, not automatically cheaper than other choices.
VPS or cloud server Recurring service charge; the official docs do not establish current prices. Can keep the Gateway available remotely. Compare the current plan and billing terms of a provider you choose.

These choices affect infrastructure spending, not the model provider’s usage charges. A VPS does not make API usage free, and using existing hardware does not remove any provider charges for model use.

Build a budget for your own workload

  1. Choose the model provider and model. Confirm the current rates and billing units for input, output, and any cached-token categories that apply.
  2. Estimate usage from your expected activity. Consider how often you will use OpenClaw, the size of requests and responses, and tool activity. Without a defined workload, token rates cannot produce a meaningful monthly estimate.
  3. Choose where the Gateway will run. Start with hardware you already have if it meets your availability needs; otherwise compare the upfront cost of dedicated hardware with recurring VPS or cloud charges.
  4. Track actual usage and costs. Review OpenClaw’s usage display and provider billing records. Treat a missing cost estimate as incomplete if pricing or usage data is not configured or recorded.

Account for security and backups with a VPS

Hosting cost is only part of operating a remote Gateway. OpenClaw’s VPS guidance recommends binding the Gateway to loopback and connecting through an SSH tunnel or Tailscale Serve. If you bind to a LAN or tailnet, the documentation requires a shared secret unless authentication is delegated to a trusted proxy. It also recommends regular backups of state and workspace. See the Linux server guidance for the relevant setup details.
