For most players, level 60–70 is the sensible range for Starscourge Radahn. Level 70 is the conservative general target, while a prepared character can win around level 55–60 by using Torrent, the festival’s NPC summons, a suitable build and well-upgraded equipment. If you deliberately fight without those NPC summons, aim closer to level 65–75. These are practical guide ranges, not an official minimum level.
Use this level range as a readiness guide, not a gate
Elden Ring does not impose a published character-level requirement for entering the Radahn encounter. The useful question is whether your character can survive Radahn’s ranged pressure and melee combos while dealing damage consistently. Character level is only one part of that calculation.

The 55–60 band is the lower edge of the advice, not a promise that every character at that level is ready. A skilled player with a focused build may succeed there, while an unfocused level-70 character can still struggle.

Why level alone does not predict the result
Weapon upgrades often matter more than a few extra levels
The readiness advice treats weapon upgrade status as a key check alongside character level. A higher-level character using an under-upgraded weapon may take too long to finish the fight, giving Radahn more opportunities to land ranged attacks and extended melee sequences. Before spending time on additional levels, check whether your main weapon has been upgraded as far as your current materials and progression allow.
No single mandatory upgrade number is established for this encounter, so a precise weapon level would create false certainty. The practical test is whether your primary weapon or spell setup produces dependable damage against a boss with a large health pool and a wide arena.
Vigor and survivability determine how many mistakes you can afford
Radahn applies pressure from distance as well as up close. Enough Vigor and general survivability let you survive a hit, heal and continue learning instead of losing the attempt to one mistake. If you are repeatedly dying before you can make meaningful progress, adding health can be more useful than putting the next level into a small damage increase.

Your build and damage approach change the target
GameSpot’s guidance emphasizes bringing a powerful weapon that fits your build or strong ranged spells. That distinction matters because a level recommendation assumes you can convert your attributes and equipment into real damage. A character whose stats are spread across several unrelated options may need more levels than a focused character at the same level.
Choose one primary damage plan before entering:
- Weapon-focused melee: use the strongest upgraded weapon that matches your attributes, and make sure you can reach Radahn safely during openings.
- Ranged spell approach: bring spells with enough range and damage to contribute while managing the open arena and incoming pressure.
- Hybrid approach: keep one dependable close-range option and one ranged option so that you are not forced into a poor matchup when Radahn changes distance.
The important comparison is not a specific weapon name but whether your chosen equipment is upgraded, scales with your build and lets you deal damage consistently.
How the festival summons and Torrent change the recommendation
Using the NPC summons
The Radahn festival is built around an open arena with NPC summon signs. Calling those allies gives Radahn additional targets and adds damage sources, which is why a prepared character can reasonably attempt the fight near level 55–60. The summons do not remove the need for survivability or a working damage plan; they simply reduce the amount of pressure placed on you at any one moment.

Treat the signs as part of the encounter’s intended structure rather than as a shortcut. If your first attempts are at the lower end of the range, use the available NPC assistance and Torrent so you can spend your limited personal damage windows efficiently.
Fighting without NPC summons
Removing the festival allies means Radahn can concentrate more of his attention on you, and you lose their additional damage. The practical recommendation rises to roughly level 65–75 in that case. Your weapon should be well upgraded, your build should have a clear damage identity and your health pool should be able to withstand the fight’s ranged and melee pressure.
There is no special reward for refusing the summons in the supplied guidance. Choose a no-summon attempt because you prefer the challenge, not because it is required for progression.
Why Torrent belongs in the lower-level plan
The encounter’s open arena and mounted movement are part of the intended fight design. Torrent helps a lower-level character manage distance and reposition while the NPC summons draw attention. If you are attempting the fight near level 55–60, entering on foot and ignoring both mobility and summons removes two advantages that support that lower range.
A practical decision framework before you enter
Use this checklist instead of treating the level number as an automatic pass:
- Check your level band. At 55–60, plan to use the festival summons and Torrent. At 60–70, you are in the broadly supported first-attempt window. At 65–75, you have a stronger baseline for a no-summon attempt.
- Check your main damage source. Confirm that your primary weapon is upgraded or that your ranged spells are strong enough to contribute reliably. Do not enter with several half-developed damage options and no clear primary choice.
- Check Vigor and survivability. You should be able to survive Radahn’s ranged pressure often enough to heal and continue the attempt. If ordinary hits are ending the fight immediately, level or equip for more health before adding another damage stat.
- Check your build’s focus. Your attributes, weapon and spells should support the same damage plan. A focused level-60 build can outperform a scattered level-70 build.
- Decide whether you will use the NPC summons. Make this choice before setting your target. The lower recommendation assumes their distraction and damage; the higher no-summon range does not.
- Plan to use Torrent. The open arena rewards mobility. If you are not comfortable controlling distance while mounted, practice movement before judging your level.
When to level up instead of retrying
Level up when survival is the limiting factor
If Radahn’s ranged attacks or melee combos kill you before you can learn his patterns, more health and defensive preparation address the actual problem. A few additional levels can be worthwhile when they materially improve survivability, especially if you are below the broad 60–70 window.

Upgrade equipment when damage is the limiting factor
If you survive for a long time but the health bar barely moves, inspect weapon upgrades and build alignment before grinding many character levels. The guide advice consistently pairs level with upgraded equipment because damage determines how long you must remain exposed.
Change the encounter setup when pressure is the limiting factor
If you can deal damage but cannot create safe openings, use the festival NPC summons and Torrent. Lower-level attempts are specifically supported by those tools. Conversely, if you are intentionally avoiding summons, accept that the encounter will demand the higher 65–75 target and stronger equipment.
How to access the Radahn fight
Starscourge Radahn becomes available through the Radahn Festival at Redmane Castle in Caelid. The festival can be activated through either of two progression routes described by Bandai Namco:

If the festival is not active, check those progression conditions before assuming that your level or equipment is the problem. Access is a progression-state issue, not a hidden character-level threshold.
How Radahn fits into Shadow of the Erdtree access
Defeating Radahn also matters if you intend to enter Elden Ring’s Shadow Realm. Bandai Namco’s expansion-access instructions state that players must defeat two significant bosses, Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, before entering the new region. That requirement is separate from the practical level advice for the Radahn battle itself: the game does not publish a mandatory level for defeating him, but both bosses must be defeated for that expansion path.

Experienced player with a strong build
A capable player can attempt level 55–60 when the weapon is well upgraded, survivability is adequate and the festival summons are used. This is an execution-dependent target, not a general guarantee.
No-summon challenge run
Plan for level 65–75 and make equipment quality a priority. The higher range compensates for losing the NPC distraction and extra damage, but it still cannot replace learning Radahn’s attacks and managing distance.
Ranged-focused character
Stay within the 60–70 window unless your spells and survivability are unusually strong. GameSpot’s recommendation specifically allows strong ranged spells as the main damage approach, but range does not eliminate the need to survive incoming pressure.
Common mistakes that make a correctly leveled character feel underpowered
- Counting levels without checking upgrades: character level cannot compensate indefinitely for a weak main weapon or unfocused spell setup.
- Ignoring Vigor: damage-focused allocations are ineffective if you cannot survive long enough to use them.
- Refusing intended tools at the low end: level 55–60 assumes Torrent and the festival summons are available and used.
- Assuming a guide number is a rule: the published figures are recommendations that shift with skill, build, summons, patches and New Game cycle.
- Grinding without identifying the bottleneck: determine whether survival, damage or positioning is failing, then address that specific issue.
What you receive for winning
The Elden Ring Wiki’s 2026 guide page lists 70,000 runes as the reward for defeating Starscourge Radahn. That figure is a listed encounter reward; it does not establish a recommended level or imply that the fight must be delayed until a particular threshold.
Final recommendation
Enter at level 60–70 if you want the most broadly supported preparation window. Use level 55–60 only when your weapon, survivability, build, Torrent control and festival summons are all ready. If you will not summon the festival NPCs, shift the target to approximately level 65–75 and insist on a well-upgraded weapon. Treat those ranges as decision points, then let your actual damage and survival determine whether you should proceed or prepare further.
