Zinc is used in four main ways: as the sacrificial coating that protects iron and steel from rust, as an alloying metal in products such as brass and die-cast parts, as a source of compounds such as zinc oxide for rubber and chemical manufacturing, and as the anode (negative electrode during discharge) in several battery chemistries. Most of these are mature, high-volume applications. Rechargeable zinc batteries for grid and long-duration storage are an important but still developing category.
The main jobs zinc performs
Zinc’s role depends on its form and on the property a product needs. In a coating, zinc corrodes preferentially and protects the steel underneath. In an alloy, it changes strength, hardness, castability or appearance. In a compound, it supplies chemical properties that manufacturers cannot get as efficiently from metallic zinc. In a battery, it is oxidized at the anode and releases electrons to the external circuit.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that about three-fourths of zinc consumption is used as metal and about one-fourth as zinc compounds. Its 2026 Mineral Commodity Summaries says most reported U.S. zinc consumption goes to galvanized steel. The estimated value of zinc mined in the United States in 2025 was $2.2 billion, a measure of the material’s economic importance rather than a price for any particular finished product.

Alkaline and zinc-carbon cells
A battery has an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte. In a common alkaline zinc–manganese dioxide (Zn-MnO2) cell, zinc is the anode and manganese dioxide is the cathode. During discharge, zinc is oxidized: it gives up electrons, which travel through the device’s external circuit and provide electrical power. Ions move through the electrolyte to complete the internal reaction.

An AA alkaline battery is a familiar example. The zinc anode and manganese-dioxide cathode are identified for alkaline cells by Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Zinc-carbon cells use the same broad anode/cathode pairing; in the traditional construction, the zinc container itself serves as the anode. The label “alkaline” describes the electrolyte system, not the absence of zinc—alkaline batteries contain zinc.
Zinc-air batteries
Zinc-air cells also use a zinc anode, but the cathode reaction uses oxygen drawn from atmospheric air. The cell therefore does not need to store all of its cathode reactant internally. That design can provide high theoretical and practical energy density, although air access, drying, contamination and rechargeability create engineering constraints.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s July 2023 Technology Strategy Assessment: Zinc Batteries reports that primary zinc-air batteries offer potentially high energy density of up to 440 Wh/kg and 1,670 Wh/L. Those are assessment figures for primary zinc-air technology, not a guarantee for every commercial cell, device or operating condition. Primary alkaline Zn-MnO2 and zinc-air batteries remain widely used in small portable consumer electronics.

Rechargeable systems use zinc’s electrode reaction repeatedly rather than consuming the cell once. Chemistries under commercial development or demonstration include zinc-bromine, zinc-nickel, zinc-manganese and zinc-ion variants. Their proposed uses include backup power, microgrids and integration of variable renewable generation.
Rechargeable zinc cells must solve problems that disposable cells can avoid, including shape change of the zinc electrode, dendrite growth, side reactions such as hydrogen evolution, electrolyte management and long cycle life. The chemistry and cell architecture determine whether a design is suitable for a small device, a multi-hour stationary system or a longer-duration installation. A 2024 California Energy Commission report describes development of a zinc-sponge anode, a nickel-zinc cell and a stationary-battery fabrication line, illustrating that some technologies are moving from laboratory work toward manufacturing while still being optimized.

Why zinc is used to galvanize steel
Barrier protection and sacrificial action
Galvanizing applies a zinc layer to iron or steel. The coating is a physical barrier that keeps water and oxygen away from the steel, but its more distinctive benefit is sacrificial protection. Zinc is more readily oxidized than iron in the relevant service conditions. If the coating is scratched or cut, zinc around the exposed area corrodes preferentially and helps protect the underlying steel. The steel therefore rusts more slowly than an uncoated piece would.
Products that are commonly galvanized
Galvanized sheet, structural members, fasteners, guardrails, automotive components and many construction products use this protection. The coating is valuable where repainting or replacing corroded steel would be difficult or expensive, including bridges, utility infrastructure, building frames, roadside hardware and outdoor equipment.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies galvanizing operations in the automotive and construction industries. The International Zinc Association describes zinc coatings as a corrosion-control technology for infrastructure and connects zinc use with transportation, energy storage, manufacturing and construction. USGS data place galvanized steel ahead of other reported U.S. zinc uses.
How the coating is made
In hot-dip galvanizing, cleaned and prepared steel is immersed in molten zinc so a metallurgically bonded coating forms. Continuous galvanizing lines apply zinc to sheet and strip before fabrication. Electrogalvanizing deposits zinc from an aqueous solution when a thinner, tightly controlled coating is needed. Other processes, including zinc spraying or mechanical plating, are selected for particular shapes, temperatures or dimensional requirements.
Coating thickness, surface preparation, steel chemistry, drainage and the service environment all affect life. Galvanizing is not an indestructible shield: severe abrasion, trapped moisture, very acidic or alkaline conditions and poor detailing can shorten coating life. Proper design lets water drain and avoids pockets where corrosion can concentrate.

Metal products made with zinc
Brass and bronze
Zinc is alloyed with copper to make brass. Varying the zinc content changes color, strength, ductility, machinability and corrosion behavior, allowing grades for plumbing components, musical instruments, electrical hardware, architectural trim and decorative items. Bronze is a broader family of copper alloys; some bronze formulations contain zinc along with other alloying elements. USGS lists brass and bronze among the leading destinations for zinc metal.

Zinc-base alloys fill complex molds at relatively low temperatures and can produce thin walls, fine detail and consistent dimensions. Die-cast zinc parts appear in hardware, automotive mechanisms, appliances, electronics, furniture fittings and consumer products. The process can reduce machining and can consolidate several small components into one casting. Designers still have to account for load, temperature, creep, corrosion and the alloy grade’s allowable service conditions.
Rolled zinc and other semi-manufactures
Rolled zinc is a direct metal product used where zinc’s corrosion resistance, formability or appearance is useful. Sheets, strip and other semi-manufactured forms can become roofing, flashing, architectural panels, batteries or industrial components. Zinc is also remelted and recycled from manufacturing scrap and end-of-life products, although recovery depends on collection systems and on whether zinc is dispersed in a coating or compound.
Zinc compounds in manufacturing
Zinc oxide in rubber and tires
Zinc oxide is one of the most important zinc chemicals. In rubber and tire manufacturing it acts as an activator in vulcanization, helping the accelerator and sulfur system form the cross-links that give cured rubber useful elasticity, strength and heat resistance. The amount and grade are controlled because excess zinc can affect processing and environmental releases.
Paint, chemical and agricultural markets
Other zinc compounds serve chemical, paint and agricultural industries. Depending on the compound, zinc can provide pigmentation, corrosion control, catalytic or formulation functions, or a micronutrient source. The exact compound—not simply the presence of the element—determines its solubility, hazard profile, color, reactivity and approved use.

The 2022 USGS Minerals Yearbook identifies extensive zinc-oxide use in rubber and tire manufacturing and also describes zinc chemicals, semi-manufactures and copper-alloy production as important manufacturing pathways. A product containing zinc metal, zinc oxide or another zinc salt should therefore be evaluated by its formulation and exposure route rather than by the word “zinc” alone.

Developing rechargeable applications
Rechargeable zinc-bromine, zinc-nickel, zinc-manganese and zinc-ion systems are being demonstrated for stationary storage rather than displacing every lithium-based battery in portable electronics. Stationary installations can value safety characteristics, long discharge duration, material availability and straightforward siting more than the highest gravimetric energy density.
The Zinc Battery Initiative says zinc remains the primary electrode in consumer AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt batteries and reported joining the U.S. Department of Energy/Sandia National Consortium for the Advancement of Long Duration Energy Storage Technologies in 2024. This industry activity does not mean every rechargeable zinc design is commercially mature. For a proposed project, the relevant questions are chemistry, cycle-life warranty, round-trip efficiency, operating temperature, maintenance, fire protection, electrolyte handling, recycling route and whether the supplier has operating installations at the required scale.
How to identify zinc’s role in a product
- Check the physical form. A visible metallic coating or zinc sheet indicates a metal application; a powder or liquid additive is more likely a zinc compound.
- Identify the function. Look for corrosion protection, alloy performance, rubber vulcanization, pigment or agricultural nutrient claims.
- For a battery, find the chemistry. Alkaline and zinc-carbon cells use zinc as the anode; zinc-air cells pair a zinc anode with oxygen from air. Rechargeable products must specify their chemistry rather than relying on the generic word “zinc.”
- Check the relevant specification. Coating thickness and substrate matter for galvanized steel, alloy grade matters for castings, and electrode, electrolyte and cycle data matter for rechargeable cells.
- Plan end of life. Keep batteries in the collection stream required in your jurisdiction, and send galvanized scrap, brass and zinc-bearing manufacturing waste to a recycler that accepts those grades.
Safety, environmental and recycling considerations
Metallic zinc is not interchangeable with every zinc compound. Industrial processes control fumes, dust, molten-metal hazards and wastewater, while rubber, paint and agricultural products are governed by formulation-specific requirements. A galvanizing operation needs ventilation and controls for molten zinc and cleaning chemicals. Battery recycling must address the complete cell, including electrolyte, seals, cathode materials and casing.

Zinc’s value in batteries also depends on responsible collection and recovery. The Zinc Battery Initiative has emphasized zinc’s comparatively low toxicity as one reason developers are interested in easier handling and disposal, but “lower toxicity” is not a substitute for following local waste rules or the safety data for a particular compound.
Bottom line: one metal, several distinct functions
Zinc is not used for one universal reason. It protects steel by corroding first, improves copper and cast-metal alloys, supplies specialized compounds such as zinc oxide, and serves as the electron-producing anode in alkaline, zinc-carbon and zinc-air batteries. Galvanized steel, brass, die-cast parts, rubber products and disposable batteries are established markets. Rechargeable zinc systems for backup and grid storage are promising but remain chemistry- and project-dependent, with many designs still in demonstration or optimization.
