Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported Xbox games from Microsoft’s cloud to a compatible device, so you can play without installing the game on that device first. You still need a supported game, a compatible device, an available region and a suitable internet connection; most games also require an eligible Game Pass plan.
How Xbox Cloud Gaming works
Instead of running the game locally on your phone, computer or TV, Xbox runs it remotely and sends the gameplay to your screen over the internet. Your controller or touch inputs travel back to the service. Because the game is streamed, connection quality and distance from the service can affect responsiveness and picture quality.

Xbox describes Cloud Gaming as a benefit included with most Game Pass plans that lets people play on compatible internet-connected devices. The service is not a guarantee that every Xbox game can be streamed on every device. Xbox’s Cloud Gaming page lists current access details and availability.

An eligible way to access the game
Most cloud-playable games require an active eligible Game Pass plan. Xbox’s current US page lists Essential, Premium and Ultimate as plans with access to hundreds of games. Plan names, included games, cloud-playtime limits and entitlements can change, so check the live plan details for your region before subscribing.

There are exceptions: Xbox says select free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in a supported region. Xbox also allows streaming of select games a player owns or buys outside Game Pass, provided the title is cloud-playable and available for streaming.
A supported device and region
Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select LG, Samsung and VIDAA OS smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and select Meta Quest VR headsets. Xbox’s getting-started guide also discusses Mac computers, Chromebooks, handhelds and Steam Deck support. These are device categories, not confirmation that every model, operating-system version or country is supported. Check Xbox’s device and regional availability information for your specific setup.

A reliable internet connection and input method
Xbox’s service FAQ gives 10 Mbps as a minimum download speed and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi; Xbox Wire recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection and wired Ethernet where practical. These are recommendations, not promises of low latency or uninterrupted play: performance also depends on your location, device and connection conditions.
A compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB is the usual input method. Some games offer touch controls, and Xbox says a range of contemporary controllers can work. A separate controller purchase is not necessary if you already have a compatible one or the game supports touch input.

How to get started
- Check access: Confirm that your region supports Cloud Gaming and that your plan, free-to-play title or owned game qualifies.
- Confirm compatibility: Check that your particular device and browser or Xbox app are supported for the service in your region.
- Open the service: Xbox says to use the Xbox app on supported devices or visit xbox.com/play in a supported browser.
- Connect and launch: Pair a compatible controller or use touch controls if available, then select a cloud-playable game. The game streams rather than installing locally on that device.
What can vary
The available games, plans, monthly cloud-playtime limits, supported devices and regions can change. Cloud play also depends on the individual game, device and network, so verify current Xbox details before relying on a particular setup. In a December 19, 2025 Xbox Wire guide, Xbox reported a 45% increase in overall Xbox cloud gaming hours compared with the same time the previous year; Xbox did not provide a denominator or methodology alongside that figure, so it is best understood as a company-reported usage comparison, not an independently verified market statistic.
