Yes. The evidence supports an African origin for Homo sapiens, the species to which all living humans belong. Claims to the contrary usually mix up our species’ emergence with earlier human species spreading beyond Africa, or with later interbreeding between humans and Neanderthals.
What does it mean to say humans came from Africa?
In this question, “humans” means Homo sapiens—our species—not every member of the broader human family. The Smithsonian Institution’s Human Origins Program dates the emergence of Homo sapiens to at least about 300,000 years ago and describes early fossils from northern, eastern and southern Africa.

That conclusion does not identify one exact birthplace. Fossils from Morocco, alongside finds elsewhere on the continent, fit an origin process involving populations across Africa over a long period. The Smithsonian says populations in different parts of Africa may have interacted and evolved for hundreds of thousands of years before our species spread elsewhere. The continent-level conclusion is well supported; the precise pattern of those early populations and their interactions remains an area of ongoing refinement.

They often treat “human” as if it referred to every human species and then mistake an early migration for the origin of Homo sapiens. The two claims concern different species and events.
#1 Best Overall
Earlier human species left Africa before our species existed
The Smithsonian’s account of the Dmanisi fossils in Georgia places early human dispersal beyond Africa by about 1.8 million years ago. One Dmanisi skull, D2282, is about 1.77 million years old and assigned to Homo erectus. That is evidence that an earlier human species lived outside Africa—not that Homo sapiens originated there.
The Smithsonian gives Homo erectus a broad fossil range of about 1.89 million to 110,000 years ago. These dates and classifications describe a different species from ours and should not be used as dates for the emergence of Homo sapiens.

Later contact with Neanderthals does not change our species’ origin
Some populations of Homo sapiens encountered and interbred with Neanderthals after humans dispersed from Africa. The Smithsonian describes gene flow in both directions and notes that many living people outside Africa carry a small amount of Neanderthal ancestry. Its overview gives a range of up to 1–4% for non-African modern humans, varying by ancestry; this is not a universal percentage for every person or a share of all human ancestry. Neanderthal DNA has also been detected in African Homo sapiens through later gene flow.

How do the key dates fit together?
| Approximate date | What the evidence describes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| At least about 300,000 years ago | Early Homo sapiens fossils, including Jebel Irhoud in Morocco, as described by the Smithsonian | Evidence for the emergence of our species in Africa; not proof that one site was its single birthplace |
| By about 1.8 million years ago | Early humans, including Homo erectus, had spread beyond Africa; the Dmanisi record in Georgia includes a fossil about 1.77 million years old | An earlier dispersal by another human species, not the origin of Homo sapiens |
The dates are not competing answers to the same question: they refer to different species and events, separated by well over a million years.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Which species? Evidence about Homo erectus or another earlier hominin is not automatically evidence about Homo sapiens.
- What event? A fossil outside Africa may document where a species lived or migrated, rather than where it first emerged.
- What kind of evidence? Fossils, archaeological remains and genetic evidence answer related but distinct questions.
- Does later gene flow get mistaken for origin? Ancestry from Neanderthals records contact after dispersal; it does not relocate the emergence of our species.
