WordPress Multisite lets one WordPress installation run a network of separate sites. The sites use shared core files and can share themes and plugins, while each site keeps its own content tables. A single user table serves the whole network, but a person still needs a role on each site they use.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
It is most useful when related regional, departmental, or brand sites need centralized administration and common code. It is usually the wrong architecture when sites must share application data extensively, release independently, or remain isolated from network-wide configuration, upgrades, and failures.

A Multisite network is a collection of WordPress sites managed from one installation. WordPress describes the network as sites that share the same core files. You maintain one codebase rather than installing a separate copy of WordPress for every site.
Each site still has its own dashboard context, settings, posts, pages, media references, and database tables. The sites are separate by default: content created on one site does not automatically appear on another. Connecting content requires a deliberate integration or a plugin designed for that purpose.

The network shares a user table. That makes it possible for one account to belong to several sites, but membership is not the same as access. The account must be assigned a role on each site, and network administration is a separate, higher-level permission.
How the shared architecture works
One core installation
WordPress core files live in one installation and are updated centrally. Themes and plugins are also installed at network level. A network administrator can make them available to individual sites, while site administrators activate only what they are allowed to use. This removes repeated installation work but means that code governance is shared.

Separate site data
Sites use separate database tables for their content and settings. A page, product catalog, or media record belongs to the site that created it unless you add a mechanism to exchange or synchronize data. Multisite therefore provides administrative consolidation, not automatic content federation.
Shared identities, separate roles
The common user table avoids duplicate accounts across the network. Roles are assigned per site, so an editor on a regional site can have no role on another site, or a different role there. Network-level capabilities remain distinct from site-level capabilities.
When Multisite is a good fit
Choose Multisite when the sites have a common operating model and the savings from central control outweigh the loss of independence.
Regional or language sites with common infrastructure
A company serving several regions can run one site per region while standardizing approved themes, plugins, and maintenance. Regional teams manage their own content, while a central team controls the underlying code.

Departmental or campus networks
Universities, large organizations, and distributed teams often need separate publishing spaces with consistent technical policies. Network administration can provide a common baseline without giving every department server access.
Networks with shared development standards
If the same custom theme or plugin is maintained for every site, one installation reduces duplicate deployment work. It is appropriate when sites can accept coordinated testing and upgrade windows.
Organizations that need centralized user management
A shared user table is useful when people participate in several sites and should keep one account. You still control each site’s role separately, which allows local editorial boundaries within a common identity system.
When Multisite is the wrong choice
You only need different designs
Several designs alone do not justify a network. If the sites otherwise share data, users, or business logic, a single WordPress site with suitable plugins may be simpler. Multisite adds network administration and server configuration that do not solve a presentation-only problem.

Multisite sites are separate by default. If orders, inventory, profiles, permissions, or other records must be tightly interconnected, you will need custom integration and a clear data-ownership model. A single site or another application architecture may better match that requirement.
Each site needs an independent release schedule
Core, theme, and plugin changes are shared operational decisions. A site that must test and deploy on a schedule unrelated to the rest of the network may be constrained by that coupling.

Strong isolation is a requirement
A network administrator can affect every site. A faulty upgrade, incompatible plugin, server incident, or network-wide configuration change can have a broad blast radius. Separate installations provide a stronger operational boundary when that risk matters more than centralization.
Subdirectories, subdomains, and mapped domains
You choose the URL model when creating the network. The choice affects DNS, web-server rules, cookies, branding, and migration planning.

| Model | Typical address | What it requires | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subdirectories (path-based) | example.com/site1 |
Working pretty permalinks and rewrite rules that route the path to WordPress. | Networks comfortable keeping sites under one main domain. |
| Subdomains (domain-based) | site1.example.com |
DNS and web-server mapping, commonly wildcard subdomains or equivalent virtual-host rules. | Sites that need distinct hostnames while remaining under one parent domain. |
| Mapped custom domains | A separate domain for each site | DNS pointing, an SSL certificate for each domain, and the mapped URL entered in Network Admin. | Independent public brands or domains managed from one network. |
Subdirectories
Path-based networks place the site identifier after the main domain. They are straightforward for a single-domain organization, but they depend on correctly functioning pretty permalinks and rewrite rules. A server that only serves the front page and does not pass path requests to WordPress will not support the network correctly.
Subdomains
Domain-based networks use a host name for each site. DNS must resolve those host names, and the web server must route them to the same WordPress installation. Wildcard subdomain configuration is common, but the exact method depends on the server.
Custom domain mapping
Native domain mapping has been available since WordPress 4.5. The documented sequence is to point each domain in DNS, install and validate SSL certificates, then enter the mapped address in Network Admin. WordPress versions before 4.5 required a domain-mapping plugin. The domain still belongs to one site in the network; mapping changes its public address, not the underlying shared architecture.
Prerequisites before you convert or create a network
- Administrator control: You need control of the existing WordPress installation and authority to make network-wide changes.
- File access: You must be able to edit
wp-config.phpand the relevant server configuration or rewrite file. - Permalinks: Pretty permalinks must work before you rely on path-based routing.
- Rewrite support: Apache deployments require
mod_rewriteand suitable.htaccesssupport. Other web servers need their equivalent rewrite and routing configuration. - DNS and TLS planning: Subdomain or custom-domain networks need DNS records, web-server mappings, and valid SSL certificates.
- Backups: Back up the existing files and database before conversion. A failed network change can affect the original site and every site created afterward.
Check these dependencies with the person who controls hosting and DNS. A Multisite setup is not only a WordPress dashboard task; it changes how the server resolves and serves URLs.

How network administration differs from ordinary WordPress
After Multisite is enabled, a network administrator works in Network Admin to create sites, manage users across the network, install themes and plugins, and set network-wide policies. Individual site administrators work inside their own site’s dashboard and receive only the capabilities assigned to them.
Theme and plugin governance is centralized. Installing code once avoids duplication, but a network-wide administrator must assess compatibility for every site, not just the site that requested a change. Decide in advance who may activate extensions, who tests updates, and how a site is recovered if an extension causes an outage.
User onboarding also needs a documented process. Create or invite the account at network level, then add it to the relevant site with the required role. Removing a user from one site does not necessarily remove the account from the network or from other sites.

The decisive question is whether central control or site independence is more valuable. This comparison keeps the trade-offs visible.

| Code and plugin governance | Core, themes, and plugins are installed centrally and can be shared. | Each site can choose and update its own code independently. |
| Users and permissions | One shared user table; roles are assigned per site, with separate network permissions. | User databases and permissions are independent unless you build synchronization. |
| URL flexibility | Supports paths, subdomains, and native mapped domains, subject to DNS and server setup. | Each installation controls its own domain and URL configuration. |
| Server configuration | One installation must handle network routing, rewrite rules, and possibly wildcard DNS. | Each site is configured independently, which can mean more repeated setup. |
| Upgrade and failure scope | A shared change or outage can affect multiple sites. | Problems are more naturally contained to one site. |
| Backup and migration | Backups and moves cover a network with shared infrastructure; extracting one site can be complex. | Backing up or moving one site is usually more self-contained. |
| Data relationships | Sites do not share content by default; integrations require deliberate design. | Sites are also separate, but you avoid a network’s shared administrative coupling. |
WordPress explicitly notes that moving a Multisite installation is more complicated than moving a single site. Treat portability as an architectural requirement, not an afterthought.
A safe implementation sequence
- Inventory the sites and responsibilities. List every planned site, its editors, its domain, its data relationships, and whether it can follow the network’s release schedule.
- Choose the URL model. Decide between subdirectories, subdomains, and future custom-domain mapping. Confirm that DNS and the web server can support the choice.
- Verify the existing installation. Confirm administrator access, working pretty permalinks, file access, rewrite support, and a clean backup of files and database.
- Plan roles and governance. Define who is a network administrator, who administers each site, who may activate plugins, and how updates are tested.
- Enable the network using WordPress’s Network Setup flow. Follow the generated instructions for the installation’s configuration and rewrite files rather than copying settings from an unrelated server.
- Create a pilot site. Test login, publishing, media, permalinks, email, backups, and the intended domain model before adding production sites.
- Install and govern shared code. Add approved themes and plugins at network level, then activate them only on sites that need them.
- Map custom domains when required. Point DNS, issue SSL certificates, and enter each mapped address in Network Admin. Test both HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior and the site’s administrative URLs.
- Document recovery and migration. Record database, files, DNS, certificates, rewrite rules, and the steps for restoring one site or the entire network.
Common failure points and how to prevent them
Permalinks work on the main site but not network sites
This usually indicates incomplete rewrite configuration. Recheck the server’s routing rules and confirm that the required Apache support or equivalent web-server configuration is active.
Best Value
A subdomain site cannot be reached
Check that DNS resolves the host name and that the web server maps it to the Multisite installation. A WordPress setting cannot compensate for a missing DNS or virtual-host rule.
A mapped domain shows certificate warnings
Verify that the certificate covers the mapped host name and that DNS points to the server presenting that certificate. Complete TLS setup before directing visitors to the new address.
An administrator cannot see a theme or plugin
Separate network installation from site activation. Confirm that the code is installed at network level and that the user has the site role or network permission needed to use it.
One site’s change affects others
Review whether the change was made in Network Admin or only in the site’s dashboard. Network-level upgrades and configuration changes require testing against every site that shares the code.
A migration plan stalls
Do not assume that exporting one site’s content reproduces a complete standalone installation. Account for shared users, network configuration, domain mappings, themes, plugins, and the site’s own database tables.
A practical decision checklist
Multisite is a strong candidate when most answers are “yes”:
- Are the sites related by organization, audience, geography, or purpose?
- Will they benefit from a shared theme, plugin set, and maintenance team?
- Can they accept coordinated code updates and a common incident-response process?
- Can each site’s content remain separate without constant cross-site data joins?
- Do you have control of DNS, SSL, rewrite rules, WordPress files, and backups?
Prefer separate installations, or reconsider a single-site design, when the answers are mostly “no”—especially if independent releases, strong isolation, or tightly shared application data are non-negotiable.
Bottom line
WordPress Multisite is an operating model for related sites, not a shortcut for any project that happens to have multiple domains. Its value comes from one codebase, centralized administration, and controlled sharing of themes, plugins, and users. Its price is shared operational risk, more demanding DNS and server configuration, and a harder migration path. Choose it when those trade-offs match the way your organization will actually run its sites.
