How to Install WHMCS 9.0 on a Linux VPS

A practical, end-to-end guide to installing WHMCS 9.0 on a Linux VPS without requiring cPanel, including supported PHP and MySQL versions, ionCube setup, database permissions, installer steps, and post-install checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install WHMCS 9.0 on a Linux VPS by building a supported Apache/PHP/MySQL stack, enabling the matching ionCube Loader, creating a database with temporary installation privileges, uploading the WHMCS files, and completing the browser installer. You do not need cPanel: root or equivalent sudo access and a correctly configured Linux server are sufficient.

The safest sequence is to harden the VPS first, verify every WHMCS requirement before uploading files, run the installer over HTTPS, remove the installation directory, and then test cron, email, billing, and permissions.

What WHMCS 9.0 requires before installation

WHMCS 9.0 self-hosted installations are validated on Linux with Apache 2.x, PHP 8.2 or 8.3, a supported MySQL server, and the ionCube Loader that matches the PHP build. The application expects a traditional LAMP layout and the standard Linux file system and cron subsystem. NGINX deployments can work, but WHMCS provides limited assistance for them, so Apache is the lower-risk choice for a new VPS.

Component Requirement for WHMCS 9.0 Practical choice
Operating system Linux; WHMCS does not prescribe one distribution in the cited requirements Use a currently supported Ubuntu, Debian, or equivalent server release and keep it updated
Web server Apache 2.x is the validated path Use Apache unless you already operate NGINX and accept limited support
PHP 8.2 or 8.3 Use one version consistently for Apache, CLI tools, and cron
PHP memory 64 MB minimum; 128 MB recommended Set at least 128 MB for room during imports, updates, and module work
Database MySQL 5.2 minimum as listed by WHMCS; MySQL 8.x recommended Choose a maintained MySQL 8.x release where possible
Required PHP capabilities cURL with SSL, GD2, IMAP, ionCube Loader, JSON, PDO, PDO_MySQL compiled with mysqlnd, Reflection, and XML Check both the loaded extensions and the PHP build used by Apache
Privileges Administrative access is needed to configure the server; root access is normally needed to install ionCube on Linux Use SSH keys and a sudo-enabled administrator rather than daily root logins

The listed MySQL 5.2 minimum and MySQL 8.x recommendation come from WHMCS’s current 9.0 requirements. Treat version support as release-specific: check the requirements for the exact WHMCS package you downloaded before upgrading either PHP or MySQL.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Is cPanel mandatory?

No. cPanel is an optional control panel, not a WHMCS dependency. The official browser workflow can use cPanel File Manager to upload an archive, but you can upload and extract the release over SSH or with another file-transfer method. A plain Linux VPS with Apache, PHP, MySQL, and cron is enough.

Choose and secure the VPS

Compare infrastructure on the factors that affect WHMCS

Decision factor What to verify Why it matters
Root or sudo access You can install packages, configure Apache and PHP, create databases, and load ionCube Shared hosting restrictions can prevent required configuration changes
Linux choices A supported, maintained distribution with security updates WHMCS does not require one named distribution, but an obsolete release creates avoidable compatibility and security problems
CPU and memory Enough RAM for PHP’s 128 MB recommendation plus MySQL, Apache, cron, and backups WHMCS is more than a static site; billing runs, imports, and reports can be resource-intensive
Storage and snapshots Fast SSD storage, usable free space, automated backups, and point-in-time or snapshot recovery Invoices and client data need recoverable backups before upgrades
Network location Data-center geography, latency to customers, and applicable data-protection obligations Billing portals should be responsive and hosted where your compliance requirements permit
Control panel Whether a panel is included and whether it changes Apache, PHP, cron, or database management A panel can simplify file management but also obscure which PHP binary the web server uses
Support and total cost Support quality, bandwidth, backup charges, storage, IPv4, and renewal pricing The advertised VPS price may not include every operational cost

As one price reference, DigitalOcean’s VPS page showed shared-CPU Droplets starting at $4 per month when accessed on October 15, 2026. Prices, availability, included resources, and regional eligibility change, so recheck the provider’s current page before ordering. Treat that figure as a starting infrastructure price, not the total cost of running a production billing system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply a baseline security setup

  1. Provision the VPS with a maintained Linux image and record its private and public addresses.
  2. Log in with the provider’s initial administrative account, update the operating system, and reboot if the kernel or core libraries were upgraded.
  3. Create a separate administrator with sudo access. Install an SSH public key for that account and test a second session before disabling password or direct-root SSH access.
  4. Enable the host firewall and allow only the services you actually need, normally SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS. Restrict SSH to trusted source addresses where practical.
  5. Set the server hostname and time synchronization, then document the timezone used for cron and billing operations.
  6. Configure encrypted backups or snapshots before importing customer or payment data. A snapshot is a recovery aid, not a substitute for an independent backup.

The exact hardening commands differ between distributions; follow the chosen distribution’s administrator documentation rather than copying commands intended for another package manager or firewall.

Build the Apache, PHP, and ionCube stack

Install and verify Apache and PHP

Install Apache 2.x and PHP 8.2 or 8.3 from repositories appropriate for your distribution. Keep the PHP version selected for Apache aligned with the command-line binary used by maintenance scripts and cron. A server can have several PHP versions installed while Apache loads only one, which is a common cause of apparently inconsistent diagnostics.

Before uploading WHMCS, check the versions from the shell with apachectl -v (or the distribution’s Apache status command) and php -v. Create a temporary PHP information page only if needed for diagnosis, protect it from public access, and remove it after testing because it exposes configuration details.

Enable every required PHP extension

Confirm that the PHP runtime loaded by Apache includes cURL with SSL, GD2, IMAP, JSON, PDO, PDO_MySQL compiled with mysqlnd, Reflection, and XML, in addition to ionCube. The command php -m checks the CLI runtime; it does not prove that Apache loads the same modules. Compare the CLI result with the web runtime and restart Apache after changing PHP modules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set PHP’s memory limit to at least 64 MB; WHMCS recommends 128 MB. Use the PHP configuration file actually loaded by Apache, not only the CLI configuration. Verify the effective value through the web runtime or WHMCS’s requirement check, then restart Apache so the change takes effect.

Install the matching ionCube Loader

ionCube Loader is mandatory for running WHMCS. The loader must match the PHP major and minor version and the server’s architecture. On Linux, installing it normally requires root access unless the hosting provider has already installed it globally.

  1. Identify the PHP version and architecture used by Apache, not just the shell’s default PHP.
  2. Obtain the ionCube Loader build corresponding to that PHP version and operating system.
  3. Install or enable the loader in the active Apache PHP configuration, following the loader package’s instructions for your distribution.
  4. Restart Apache and confirm that the web runtime reports ionCube as loaded.
  5. Repeat the check for the CLI binary if WHMCS cron or command-line maintenance will run there.

If the browser installer says ionCube is missing while php -v appears correct, you have probably enabled it for CLI but not Apache, or enabled a loader compiled for a different PHP version. Compare the loaded configuration paths and restart the service after correcting them.

Create the WHMCS database safely

Disable unsupported MySQL strict mode

WHMCS documents MySQL Strict Mode as unsupported. In particular, STRICT_TRANS_TABLES or ERROR_FOR_DIVISION_BY_ZERO can cause serious problems. Check the active SQL mode on the server and remove those modes according to your MySQL version’s configuration method. Restart MySQL if your change is persistent-configuration based, then verify the effective mode with a new client session.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Do not assume that changing a session’s mode fixes the server. The mode used by Apache’s database connections must be the one you have checked, and an upgrade can restore distribution defaults.

Create a dedicated database and account

Use a separate database and user rather than an existing application account. The following SQL illustrates the structure; replace the sample names and secret with values generated for this installation.

CREATE DATABASE whmcs_db CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
CREATE USER 'whmcs_user'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'Use-a-long-random-secret';
GRANT ALTER, DROP, LOCK TABLES, CREATE, INDEX, SELECT, DELETE, INSERT, UPDATE
  ON whmcs_db.* TO 'whmcs_user'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

The installation account needs ALTER, DROP, LOCK TABLES, CREATE, INDEX, SELECT, DELETE, INSERT, and UPDATE. Use the narrowest host value that matches your topology; localhost is preferable when PHP and MySQL run on the same VPS. If the database is on another server, restrict the account to the application’s private address or network and encrypt the connection as required by your environment.

Reduce privileges after installation

Installation-time privileges are broader than routine operation. After the installer completes and you have verified the application, remove ALTER, CREATE, DROP, and INDEX from the daily account as WHMCS documents. Retain the privileges needed for normal reads and writes, updates, and module activation or deactivation. Plan a controlled temporary elevation whenever a future WHMCS update explicitly requires schema changes, then reduce the account again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download and upload WHMCS

  1. Purchase a valid WHMCS license and download the release that matches the requirements you verified. Keep the archive and license records in a secure administrative location.
  2. Choose a document root dedicated to the WHMCS site, such as the virtual host’s web directory. Do not place unrelated applications in the same tree.
  3. Upload the ZIP archive with SSH/SFTP or a control-panel file manager, then extract it into the document root. Manual upload of an already-unzipped WHMCS directory is also supported.
  4. Keep the extracted WHMCS directory name different from admin. WHMCS uses an admin folder for the Admin Area by default, and a naming collision can make administration confusing or inaccessible.
  5. Point the Apache virtual host at the directory containing the WHMCS entry point. Enable HTTPS before entering the license or database credentials.

Do not leave the ZIP archive, temporary PHP information pages, or unrelated installation scripts publicly accessible. Restrict ownership and permissions so the web-server account can read application files and write only to directories that WHMCS explicitly requires.

Run the browser installer

The browser method is the standard path for most administrators.

  1. Open the HTTPS URL for the directory where you extracted WHMCS. The installer performs an environment and requirements check.
  2. Resolve every failed check before continuing. Pay particular attention to PHP version, memory limit, required extensions, ionCube, writable paths, and database connectivity.
  3. Enter the WHMCS license details when prompted.
  4. Provide the database host, database name, username, password, and port. Use the dedicated account created for this installation.
  5. Allow the installer to create and populate the schema. If it reports a SQL-mode or privilege error, stop and correct the database configuration rather than repeatedly submitting the form.
  6. Complete the administrator account and application settings, using a unique administrator username and a long password stored in an approved password manager.
  7. When the installer reports success, delete the installation directory as instructed by WHMCS.
  8. Review file and folder permissions, then load the home page, client area, and Admin Area over HTTPS in separate tests.

Deleting the installation directory is a required post-installation action, not an optional cleanup step. Leaving it in place can expose a route to rerun or interfere with the completed installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the command-line installer instead

The command-line method is intended for advanced administrators who are comfortable with WHMCS, database management, PHP configuration, and the shell. It is useful for repeatable deployments, restricted environments, or automation, but it does not bypass compatibility requirements.

  1. Download and unzip the WHMCS release on the server or in a controlled build location.
  2. Verify the operating system and web server, PHP 8.2 or 8.3, MySQL compatibility, required extensions, and matching ionCube Loader before running any installer command.
  3. Upload the files to the final document root and set ownership and permissions appropriate for the Apache account.
  4. Supply the license, database connection, administrator, and application configuration values through the command-line prompts or configuration inputs documented for your WHMCS release.
  5. Run the installation command with the PHP binary that matches the web server’s version. If multiple PHP binaries exist, call the intended absolute path rather than relying on the shell’s default.
  6. Check the command output for schema, permission, or license errors. Correct the underlying issue and rerun only after confirming that a partial installation will not leave conflicting data.
  7. Delete the installation directory and perform the same HTTPS, permission, cron, email, and billing tests used after a browser installation.

Automate the process only after a manual installation succeeds. Keep database passwords and license credentials out of shell history and public scripts.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Validate the finished installation

Application and transport checks

  • The public home page loads over HTTPS without mixed-content or certificate errors.
  • A new or existing client can reach the client area, authenticate, and view account information.
  • The Admin Area loads at the renamed or default administrative path, and the default administrator credentials have been changed from any temporary values.
  • HTTP redirects and virtual-host rules do not expose the installer or a directory listing.

PHP, cron, and mail checks

  • Run php -v from the same context used by cron and compare it with the PHP version reported by Apache.
  • Confirm that cron invokes the intended PHP binary and that its environment can reach the WHMCS document root and database.
  • Send a test message through the configured mail transport and verify delivery, headers, and bounce handling.
  • Review logs after the first scheduled run; a different CLI PHP version can cause failures even when browser requests work.

Billing and permission checks

  • Create a representative client, product, invoice, and payment test in a safe environment or with test data.
  • Verify invoice generation, payment callbacks, status changes, and email notifications before processing real transactions.
  • Confirm that application files are not writable by unrelated system users and that only required runtime directories are writable by Apache.
  • Take a backup and test that you can restore both the database and uploaded files.

Troubleshoot common installation failures

“ionCube Loader is missing”

Check the PHP version and architecture used by Apache, install the corresponding loader, and restart Apache. Then inspect the web runtime rather than relying solely on CLI output. If cron also runs WHMCS, load ionCube for that CLI PHP binary as well.

Unsupported PHP version or missing extensions

WHMCS 9.0 requires PHP 8.2 or 8.3 and the listed extensions. Remove an older Apache module from the active virtual host or switch the site to the supported PHP handler. After enabling an extension, restart Apache and rerun the requirement check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Database connection or permission errors

Confirm the hostname, port, database name, username, and password independently with a MySQL client. Verify that the account is allowed to connect from the web server’s host and has the installation privileges, including LOCK TABLES. A successful login with insufficient privileges can still fail when WHMCS creates or alters tables.

SQL-mode errors or corrupt-looking data

Inspect the server’s effective SQL mode and remove unsupported strict modes, especially STRICT_TRANS_TABLES and ERROR_FOR_DIVISION_BY_ZERO. Start a fresh connection after changing the mode and test again. Do not hide the error by granting unrelated database privileges.

Permission-denied or unwritable-directory errors

Find the user running Apache and compare it with the owner and group of the WHMCS tree. Grant write access only to directories WHMCS identifies as writable; do not make the entire document root world-writable. Recheck permissions after extraction because archive tools can preserve an unsuitable owner.

The site works in a browser but cron fails

Compare the PHP binary, loaded extensions, ionCube status, working directory, environment variables, and file permissions between Apache and cron. Configure cron to use the same supported PHP version as the web server and review its output and system logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Admin Area cannot be found

Confirm the actual administrative directory name, the Apache document root, and any rewrite or redirect rules. The WHMCS directory itself should not be named admin, because that name is used by the Admin Area by default.

Operate the VPS after installation

  • Apply operating-system, Apache, PHP, MySQL, and WHMCS updates through a documented maintenance window.
  • Before upgrades, take verified database and file backups and record the current PHP and ionCube versions.
  • Keep the daily database account reduced after installation; elevate it only for a documented update that needs schema privileges.
  • Monitor disk space, memory, failed cron runs, mail queues, authentication logs, and HTTPS certificate expiry.
  • Review administrator accounts and API credentials regularly, remove unused access, and require strong unique passwords.
  • Retest a sample invoice and payment workflow after major PHP, MySQL, or WHMCS changes.

A Linux VPS gives you the control WHMCS expects, but it also makes you responsible for patching, firewall policy, backups, TLS, database security, and recovery testing. A correctly completed installer is only the beginning of a production-ready billing service.
