Moderation commands have different effects. Decide whether you need an immediate removal, a continuing server-access restriction, or a rule that limits the entire server to approved players.

A kick is not a ban. A kicked player can normally try to join again unless another access-control rule prevents it. A ban is a server-local decision; it is not the same as a Microsoft account enforcement action.

What you need before banning someone
Operator or console authority
Minecraft’s official command guidance says that multiplayer commands require a high-enough permission level. The owner of a server or Realm generally has the required authority by default. If you are playing on somebody else’s server, ask its administrator to grant the necessary permission or perform the action for you.
The server console is an alternative control point. A console command can be useful when the player is not in the game, when chat commands are disabled, or when you need to record moderation actions outside the game client. The console’s exact interface is supplied by the server software or hosting environment.
The exact player name
Use the player name recognized by your server. Check spelling, capitalization where the software treats it as significant, and spaces or special characters. A name that is entered incorrectly may affect nobody, or may target a different account if the server has a matching name.
A clear server policy
The official command documentation does not set a universal ban duration, evidence standard, warning requirement, or appeal process. Those are decisions for the server owner and moderation team. Before acting, know whether your rules call for a warning, a temporary restriction, a permanent restriction, or an appeal opportunity.
How to ban a player with the standard command
Use this procedure on a server where the standard ban command is available.
- Verify your authority. Confirm that you are the owner, an authorized operator, or a moderator whose permission level allows server commands.
- Identify the player. Copy the exact in-game name shown by the server. If the player is online, check the connected-player list or the name visible in chat before acting.
- Open a command entry point. In the game, open chat and begin a command with a slash. If you are administering remotely, use the server console supplied by your server software.
- Enter the ban command. Type
/ban <playername>, replacing<playername>with the target’s name, then submit it. - Read the server response. A successful command should produce a confirmation or moderation message. If the server reports an unknown command, an invalid name, or insufficient permission, do not assume the ban occurred.
- Check the result. If the player was online, verify that the connection ended and that a subsequent join attempt is refused. Do not repeatedly issue the command when the server has already confirmed it.
- Record the action. Note the date, player name, rule involved, evidence retained under your policy, and the moderator who acted. Keeping this record makes later appeals and consistency checks easier.
The command guide describes /ban <playername> as banning a player from a server. It does not establish a universal time limit or appeal workflow, so your server rules must supply those details.

When kick is the better choice
Use /kick <playername> when you need to remove a currently connected player without deciding that the player must be blocked from future access. The official command description defines kick as removing a player from a server.
Typical kick situations
- A player is causing an immediate disruption but has not yet reached the threshold for a ban.
- You need to end a session while investigating a report.
- A player must reconnect after a server-side change or correction.
- Your written rules call for a warning and removal rather than a continuing access restriction.
Kicking does not create the same continuing access control as a ban. If the conduct warrants preventing a return, use the ban mechanism supported by your server and document the reason instead of treating a kick as a substitute.
Java and Bedrock are not documented identically
Edition labels alone do not tell you every moderation feature available on a particular server. Identify the server software and version first, especially when you administer Bedrock.
Java-oriented or general command documentation
Minecraft’s general command guide lists both the standard ban command and the kick command. On a compatible server, an authorized operator can run the ban command in chat or the console as described above.
Bedrock Dedicated Server
Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference documents /kick and an owner-level /allowlist. Its documentation does not establish that every Bedrock server build supports Java’s complete ban-list command set. Therefore, do not promise a particular Bedrock ban or unban syntax without checking the exact server software and version.

/allowlist add <name: id>/allowlist remove <name: id>/allowlist list/allowlist reload
Microsoft also describes the equivalent Dedicated Server workflow using a GamerTag:
/allowlist add <GamerTag>/allowlist remove <GamerTag>
An allowlist is an admission-control system: it determines who is approved to join. It is not evidence of a universal, player-specific ban command for all Bedrock deployments. A player absent from the allowlist may be unable to join even though the server is not maintaining a conventional ban entry for that player.

Editing allowlist.json
If you edit allowlist.json outside Minecraft, run /allowlist reload afterward so the running server reads the updated file. Quote a GamerTag that contains spaces. Keep a backup before editing, use valid JSON, and reload only after saving the complete file; an incomplete edit can leave the server with an outdated or unusable admission list.
Because allowlist behavior is implementation-specific, test with a non-critical account or a scheduled maintenance window. Confirm both sides of the policy: an approved account can join and an unapproved account cannot. If the result differs from the documentation, consult the documentation for that exact Bedrock server release rather than mixing Java instructions into the setup.
Ban, allowlist, and account enforcement are different scopes
Server-local moderation
A ban or allowlist decision made by a privately operated server applies to that server’s access rules. The owner or administrators control the decision, its duration, the evidence standard, and the appeal route.
Microsoft account enforcement
A platform account action is separate from a private-server ban. Minecraft Help states that account bans are connected to the unique Microsoft account ID, not merely to a gamertag or profile name. Changing a visible profile name therefore does not turn a platform enforcement action into a new account.

Where to appeal
Minecraft Help says that a player banned from a privately owned server should contact that server’s administrator to appeal. The server owner should publish one contact method and explain whether appeals can provide new evidence, correct an identity mistake, or request a review after a stated period.

The server says you lack permission
Ask the owner to grant the required multiplayer permission or run the command from the server console. Do not give broad operator access to an untrusted moderator merely to solve one incident; use the narrowest role your server software supports.
The command is unknown
Confirm the edition, server software, and version. The standard command guide is not proof that every Bedrock deployment implements the same command set. On Bedrock Dedicated Server, check whether your policy should use the documented allowlist instead.

Stop and verify the exact name, including spaces and spelling. Ask another moderator to confirm the identity against the incident record. If your implementation offers a player list or console log, use that server-side information rather than relying on a nickname copied from an external message.
The player can still join
First check the server’s confirmation message and logs to determine whether the command succeeded. Then verify that the player is connecting to the same server instance and address you moderated. A server-local rule cannot automatically control a different server, Realm, or platform account.
An edited Bedrock allowlist has no effect
Confirm that the file was saved as valid allowlist.json, that the GamerTag is represented correctly, and that you ran /allowlist reload. If a GamerTag contains spaces, quote it in the command. Recheck the active list with /allowlist list.
Build a fair, auditable ban process
Commands are only one part of moderation. A short written process reduces mistaken identity, inconsistent penalties, and disputes between moderators.

- Define prohibited conduct. State which behavior can lead to removal, a temporary restriction, or a permanent restriction.
- Set authority boundaries. Specify who may kick, who may ban, and who reviews a moderator’s action.
- Preserve relevant evidence. Keep timestamps, chat or log excerpts, and witness reports only as long as your privacy and community rules allow.
- Use proportional responses. A kick can interrupt an incident while a ban decision is reviewed; do not describe a kick as a permanent penalty.
- Communicate the outcome. Tell the affected player which server rule was applied and how to appeal, without exposing another player’s private information.
- Review errors. If a name was misidentified or a command was applied to the wrong account, correct the server rule promptly and record the correction.
For a small private server, this can be a one-page rules document. For a larger community, maintain a moderation log that records the command, operator, reason, and review status. The documentation does not require a particular format; consistency is the important safeguard.
Quick decision checklist
- Do I have owner, operator, moderator, or console authority?
- Am I trying to remove the player now, or prevent future access?
- Does this exact server software support the command I intend to use?
- Have I verified the player’s exact name or GamerTag?
- Does my server policy define the duration and appeal route?
- Have I recorded the reason and confirmed the server’s response?
If the answer to the software-support question is unclear on Bedrock, use the documented allowlist controls only when an approved-player model fits your server, and verify the exact release documentation before taking action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ban someone from a Minecraft server if I am not the owner?
Only if the owner has granted you a permission level that allows the command. Otherwise, ask the administrator to perform the action or adjust your role.
Does kicking a player stop them from rejoining?
No. Kick removes the current connection; it is not the same continuing access restriction as a ban.
Is a private-server ban the same as a Microsoft account ban?
