If files must open when your internet connection is down, keep a synchronized copy in a normal local folder. An rclone mount makes Google Drive look like a local filesystem, but it remains a view of remote data; its VFS cache can retain some data, yet cache eviction and metadata behavior mean it is not a dependable offline mirror.
Use a mount for convenient online browsing, rclone copy or a carefully planned one-way sync for a local offline set, and rclone bisync when both the local folder and Drive need to accept edits. The right choice depends on whether you need browsing, guaranteed offline files, or two-way change reconciliation.

Choose the workflow that matches your offline requirement
These commands solve different problems. Decide whether the local copy is merely a cache, a deliberate offline replica, or a second working copy that must exchange changes with Drive.
| Need | Better starting point | What you gain | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browse a large Drive tree without downloading everything | rclone mount |
Drive appears as a filesystem and data is fetched as applications request it. | Reads normally need connectivity. Cached data can be evicted, so the mount does not promise complete offline access. |
| Keep a selected folder as ordinary local files for travel or outages | rclone copy or a deliberate one-way rclone sync |
Files exist in a real local directory and can be opened without a network connection. | Uses local storage and requires a clear source-to-destination policy. sync propagates deletions from its source. |
| Edit on both the computer and Google Drive | rclone bisync |
Compares both sides and transfers changes in both directions when run. | It is periodic, not a continuous file watcher. State files, conflicts, locks and recovery procedures must be managed. |
For a folder that must work after a restart or during a long outage, choose the local-copy workflow. Treat a mount cache as a performance and write-back feature, not as your only offline copy.

Install and configure the Google Drive remote
Install rclone for your operating system, then create a Drive remote with rclone config. The current Google Drive backend documentation covers authentication, scopes, shared drives and API settings at https://rclone.org/drive/. Follow that page’s current prompts rather than copying an old screenshot or assuming that defaults have not changed.
Use your own Google API client
rclone’s documentation says the shared default client ID is being retired during 2026. Configure your own Google API client as directed by the current backend guide, especially if you will transfer many files or make frequent requests. Drive rate limits can be noticeable with large numbers of small files; reducing unnecessary scans and scheduling transfers sensibly helps, but it does not remove Google’s quotas.
Confirm the remote before moving data
- Run
rclone listremotesand confirm the name you created, such asgdrive:. - List the top level with
rclone lsd gdrive:or inspect a known folder withrclone lsf gdrive:Folder. - Use a harmless listing before any destructive command. Check spelling, capitalization and whether the path is in My Drive or a shared drive.
Commands below use gdrive: as an example remote and placeholder local paths. Replace them with paths appropriate to your operating system; do not paste a Unix mount path unchanged into Windows.

A mount exposes remote objects through a filesystem interface. It is useful when the Drive tree is too large to store locally or when you want applications to open remote files in place. It does not, by itself, download every file or make every file available when the network disappears.
Mount with a VFS cache
A representative command is:
rclone mount gdrive: /path/to/drive --vfs-cache-mode full --cache-dir /path/to/rclone-cache
Consult the current rclone mount documentation for foreground/background behavior, service setup and platform-specific requirements. Put the cache on a filesystem with enough free space, and make sure the account running rclone can read and write both the mount point and cache directory.
Understand the four cache modes
| Mode | Behavior | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
off |
No VFS file-data cache. Operations are passed through with the least local storage. | Simple online access where applications tolerate a remote filesystem. |
minimal |
Provides limited caching for operations that need it. | Narrow compatibility needs, not a planned offline set. |
writes |
Caches files being written and read/write files, then uploads them after close and the write-back delay. Failed uploads can be retried when rclone runs again with the same relevant settings. | Online work that needs broader filesystem-operation compatibility and resilient write-back. |
full |
Also caches reads. Downloaded ranges are tracked in sparse cache files, allowing large files to be fetched in chunks. | Repeated access to remote files where local disk can hold cached data. |
The official documentation describes writes as supporting normal filesystem operations; that describes operation compatibility, not a guarantee that all Drive data is stored locally. In full mode, the default cache age is one hour since last access. Cache-size and free-space settings can evict older data sooner, so a file that opened yesterday may need to be downloaded again today.

Filesystem and cache pitfalls
- Do not put a
full-mode cache on FAT or exFAT when you can avoid it. The documentation warns that these filesystems do not support sparse files and can perform badly for this workload. - Never run overlapping mounts with the same VFS cache directory. rclone warns that doing so can corrupt cached data.
- Cached writes are uploaded after a file is closed and the configured write-back delay expires. If rclone exits first, it can retry on a later run with the same flags, but the cache is not a backup.
- Remote changes made outside the mount can make directory listings stale. Polling support and the directory-cache expiration determine when rclone notices them.
- The default attribute cache is one second. Increasing it can reduce callbacks, but it also increases the chance of stale file-length metadata. If a remote file changes during that window, an application can see truncation or trailing garbage.
Why a mount is not an offline mirror
Even with --vfs-cache-mode full, only data that has been accessed and retained is local. A newly added file, an uncached range in a large file, or an evicted object still requires Drive access. If your requirement is “open this selected folder with Wi-Fi and Ethernet disabled,” create a synchronized local directory and test it after disconnecting the network.
Option 2: Build a dependable local offline folder
Use a local folder as the authoritative offline copy. Start with a non-destructive copy when you are learning the layout:
rclone copy gdrive:Projects /local/Projects --progress
copy transfers missing or changed source files without deleting unrelated files already in the destination. Repeat it when you want to refresh the local set, then verify that the local files open while offline.
Use one-way sync only when deletion direction is intentional
sync makes the destination match the source, including deleting destination files that no longer exist at the source. For example:
rclone sync gdrive:Projects /local/Projects --progress
Here, Drive is the source and the local folder is the destination. A local file deleted manually can reappear on the next run if it still exists on Drive; a file removed from Drive can be removed locally. Reverse the paths only when you intentionally want local deletions and edits pushed toward Drive.

Preview a potentially destructive run with --dry-run:
Recommended Free Tools
rclone sync gdrive:Projects /local/Projects --dry-run --progress
Read the proposed additions, updates and deletions before removing the preview flag. Keep a separate backup if the local folder contains irreplaceable work; synchronization is not the same as versioned backup.
Make the offline copy practical
- Choose only the folders you need, using separate commands or rclone filters rather than downloading an entire account by accident.
- Leave enough free disk space for the files and temporary transfer data.
- Run the refresh before travel, then disconnect the network and open representative documents, archives, photos and project files.
- Record which side is authoritative and how often the refresh runs. A scheduled one-way copy is safer than an undocumented mixture of manual edits and destructive syncs.
Option 3: Reconcile edits on both sides with bisync
rclone bisync is for two-way workflows: local changes can go to Drive and Drive changes can come down. It compares the two sides when you run it; it does not continuously watch the folder like a native sync client. The full procedure and recovery rules are in the official bisync documentation.
Prepare the first run
- Make a safe backup of the local folder and identify the corresponding Drive folder.
- Apply filters deliberately if only part of either tree should participate. Test those filters with listings before bisync.
- Perform the initial
--resyncexactly as the current documentation prescribes. The initial state establishes how the two sides are compared; it is not a command to repeat casually whenever a run fails. - Inspect the result and confirm that the chosen side’s files are present before enabling a schedule.
A typical shape is:
rclone bisync gdrive:Projects /local/Projects --resync --progress

Schedule it, but understand what scheduling means
Run bisync from Task Scheduler, cron or another service at an interval that matches your work. Close applications that are still writing files before the run, and avoid running two bisync jobs against the same pair simultaneously. A schedule gives you periodic reconciliation, not instant propagation; edits made after a run remain local until the next successful run.
Handle errors instead of forcing a reset
Bisync keeps state files and uses locks. Critical errors can stop a run to prevent an unsafe interpretation of changes. Read the error, preserve the state and make a backup before attempting recovery. Repeatedly forcing --resync, deleting state files, or changing filters midstream can turn an outage into unintended deletions or duplicate files. Follow the recovery options documented for the specific error and rclone version.

Google Docs, Sheets and Slides need special handling
Drive-native documents are not ordinary uploaded files. rclone’s Drive documentation notes that they have unknown size and no checksum in the usual file sense. Consequently, do not treat --checksum or --size-only as reliable change detection for native Docs, Sheets or Slides in a bisync workflow.
Bisync exports these native formats according to the configured export settings. Choose formats that your local applications can open, and understand that the exported file is a representation of the Drive document, not a live editable Google document. Shortcuts are exported read-only locally. A local move or rename may be interpreted as a deletion plus a creation rather than as a single rename, so review changes carefully before a two-way run.
Plan exports before disconnecting
- Open a representative exported document locally while online, then repeat with the network disabled.
- Check whether the selected export format preserves the features your workflow needs, such as formulas, comments or layout.
- Keep the original Drive-native item available if you need to continue collaborative editing in Google’s web apps.
Troubleshoot common offline and synchronization failures
A mounted file will not open without internet
That is expected when the file or the required range is not in the VFS cache, or when it was evicted. Copy the folder to a real local directory before going offline, or open every required file while connected and verify that the cache has enough space—without treating that test as a permanent guarantee.
Local edits have not appeared in Drive
With a mount, confirm the file was closed and that the write-back delay elapsed. Check rclone’s output for upload errors and keep the same cache directory and relevant flags when restarting. With bisync, run the next scheduled or manual bisync and inspect its log; it does not upload continuously.
The local folder contains unexpected deletions
Stop and identify the source and destination. A one-way sync intentionally mirrors deletions from its source. For bisync, preserve state and review critical errors rather than resetting. Restore from the separate backup if an unwanted deletion has already propagated.

Listings do not show a recent Drive change
Mounted directory metadata can remain cached. Wait for the directory-cache expiration or refresh according to the mount documentation. Raising cache times improves performance at the cost of staler metadata, so do not use a long attribute cache when applications require immediate length changes.
Transfers are slow or frequently rate-limited
Many small files create more API operations than a few large files. Use your own API client as directed in the Drive backend guide, avoid needless repeated scans, and schedule large refreshes outside busy periods. Provider quotas can still limit throughput.
A safe operating checklist
- Define the requirement: online browsing, guaranteed offline access, or two-way editing.
- Configure and test the Drive remote with
rclone config. - For offline access, create a real local copy; do not rely solely on a mount cache.
- Use
--dry-runbefore a new or destructivesync. - For bisync, back up first, use deliberate filters, complete the documented initial
--resync, and retain state files. - Test after disconnecting the network, including files changed recently and any exported Google documents.
- Keep a separate backup. Neither VFS cache nor synchronization protects against every deletion, corruption or mistaken edit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I preload only one folder in a mounted Drive?
You can access that folder while connected so its data enters the VFS cache, but cache retention and eviction are not a durable preload guarantee. A local copy of the folder is the dependable method when it must survive an outage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill bisync work through an rclone mount?
Bisync is a separate synchronization workflow and does not use the mount’s VFS as its coordination mechanism. Point it at the Drive remote and a normal local directory, then follow its state and recovery rules.
How often should I run bisync?
There is no universal interval. Choose one short enough that simultaneous edits are uncommon and long enough for transfers to finish, then schedule it with your operating system. Remember that every interval leaves a window in which changes exist on only one side.
Can an offline copy replace Google Drive’s native document collaboration?
No. Native Docs, Sheets and Slides are exported into configured local formats, with limitations such as read-only shortcut exports and no ordinary checksum. Keep the Drive-native item for web collaboration and treat the local export as an offline representation.
